Del Amitri - Nothing Ever Happens

Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
Janitors padlock the gates
For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show

And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The Martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same video every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replay

Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While angry from Manchester writes to complain about
All the repeats on T.V.
And computer terminals report some gains
On the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wing

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Joni Mitchell - My Old Man

My old man
He's a singer in the park
He's a walker in the rain
He's a dancer in the dark
We don't need no piece of paper
From the city hall
Keeping us tied and true
My old man
Keeping away my blues

He's my sunshine in the morning
He's my fireworks at the end of the day
He's the warmest chord I ever heard
Play that warm chord, play and stay baby
We don't need no piece of paper
From the city hall

Keeping us tied and true
My old man
Keeping away my blues

But when he's gone
Me and them lonesome blues collide
The bed's too big
The frying pan's too wide

Then he comes home
And he takes me in his loving arms
And he tells me all his troubles
And he tells me all my charms
We don't need no piece of paper
From the city hall
Keeping us tied and true
No, my old man
Keeping away my blues

World Party - Put A Message In The Box

And if you listen now
You might hear a new sound coming in
As an old one disappears
See the world in just one grain of sand

You better take a closer look
Don't let it slip right through your hand
Won't you please hear the call
The world says

Now is the moment, please understand
The road is wide open to the heart of every man
A few simple words
So a mule could understand

He don't want tomorrow
If it's just crumbling into sand
Won't please hear the call
She says

Put the message in the box
Put the box into the car
Drive the car around the world
Until you get heard x 2

The world says
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to me
'Cause I'm waiting right here with my open arms

Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your soul to me
'Cause I'm waiting to behold your many charms
Is that love in the air? She says

Until you get heard x 4

  1. I have listen to three of the songs, and I think “My old man” song is the most intresting song among the other two because the uniqe vocal range and vocal character I have never heard something like that before . At first I think it’s a love song but when I read the lyrics it is actually a song about a dad (Old man), and I think the person old man who wrote the lyrics is everything to the him/her because the lyrics said he’s my sunshine , he’s my warmest chord etc. this song is intresting because most song that have this kind of lyrics are songs with mellow tunes with sad vocal , but listening to this song makes me happy , I think its because the genre of this music is blues and blues is one of my favourite genre besides jazz, classic, trance, and pop . I’ve also listen to the World Party “Put a Message In The Box” and it reminds me to the music from the 80’s the tunes are quite similar with songs from that period , Its like listening to the beatles.

  2. I only listened to the Joni Mitchell song. I have to agree with Bintang that the vocals really made the song stand out. I have never before heard something similar either. I also really liked how the piano followed the vocals in the refrain.

I don't really agree that the song is about her father though. I've heard the term "old lady" being used about wives, so I guess you could also use "old man" for husband. She also talks about how the bed feels too big when he's not around, and how they don't need a piece of paper to keep them together. I perceive this piece of paper to be a marriage certificate.

I agree that the song's lyrics are quite somber as they imply that she gets depressed when she's alone(whenever he's gone me and them lonesome blues collide) but the melody of the whole song is very playful and uplifting. Great song!

Yes. These lines undermine Bintang's theory. So does the line "He's my fireworks at the end of the day". However, there is going to be no official explanation of this line from the Faculty of Economics and Business at UGM.

  3. I have listened to all the songs and I am in love with Joni Mitchell and World Party song. With the eye-catching vocals, Mitchell got me sinking in her world. In my opinion, she sang a song for her boyfriend or husband. She point out that he is everything that she needs and he completed her life. Without him, she is just a little girl.

Although, World Party just an ordinary band like the others, but their song successfully amazed me. With a pop and little bit of folkish instrument made me enjoyed the song. The meaning of their song in my opinion is just do what you wanna do and be happy with your life and your love.

I guess people can not bored by love and peace songs. Like Joni Mitchell, she wrote about a love story, of course about her man. Also, World Party wrote about a love story and mixed it up with kind of peace things.

  4. Sir, I think It'd be a good idea if you could provide not only songs, but also music for the next 'three tunes' article. It could be from the romantic pieces of Chopin or Liszt, contemporary dance tunes from popular DJs such as Dimitri Vegas&Like Mike, or even the avant-garde like Merzbow's works or 'Revolution 9' by The Beatles. Cheers!
