The EWS Photograph Gallery

There seem to be a lot of you who are interested in photography as a hobby. If you think you have some interesting or artistic pictures to share, send them to me at farbaloma@yahoo.com and SMS me on 0813 9225 5826 to tell me you have sent me an e-mail [don't forget to mention your name in the SMS!]. Save it as a JPG and keep the file size below 2MB if you can. Give your photograph a title.

I will display the pictures here on this thread and at the end of the semester I will choose ten or twelve and we can vote for Best Photo EWS 2013.

Use the COMMENTS feature below to share ideas about photography, if you want.

  1. Finally you’ve made the EWS photograph gallery, many of us choose photography as their hobby, so i can see that someday EWS gallery will have a lot of artistic pictures from IUP students, and maybe next week i will send my artistic picture to you (actually im still newbie hehehe). But i have a question, If i win the best photo for EWS, then you will give me a prize? like A grade for english writing skill course or maybe a new camera for me? Or you don’t have any prize for the winner? .
I have a message for IUP students, hey maybe we can go to Parangtritis, Sundak, etc then see the sunrise take some picture of it, or someday we can go to prambanan temple watch the flying lampion in the night and take some picture, oh god it will be so artistic hahaha, or you’ve another idea? Share it here guys.

  2. Wow finally I can use my camera somewhere around Yogyakarta! Well I am more excited in taking photos of people’s activities, so... since we are economics, accounting, and business students, I would like to recommend place like markets, or maybe paddy fields. Or we can do something artistic like our friend Haris said.

I have some reasons why I think we should take the activity photos; we can see what people do for a living, what they do to fulfill their needs, and the story behind it. You know what people say, “A photo speaks a thousand words.”
Photography is great. Photographers from around the world took dangerous explorations just to take good photos. I really admire national geographic photos. You should take a look at them, I bet you’ll find them interesting too!

I am still new when it comes to photography, but I think I can do it too!

  3. Oh my, it's really nice that you noticed the presence of us photographers. Being a photographer myself, it’s always nice to see other photographers and the works that they have, especially if they can share their ideas regarding techniques and/ or places to shoot. Now, being new in Yogyakarta myself would mean that I’m pretty much crippled if I want to take pictures of things other than those inside the university or the faculty. I liked Haris’ idea of going for a road trip to somewhere scenic. Going on a trip, in my experience, is the best way to hone your photography skills.

Then again, I remembered that I left most of my equipment back in Jakarta… It would be quite some time until I can do the more serious stuff in Yogya. I can make do, however with a compact camera, and as a famous photographer named Chase Jarvis said it: “the best camera is the one that’s with you”, and with the photographer and not the camera that makes the final result, I actually find my current situation an interesting challenge instead.

Count me stoked in your gallery idea, mr. Adrian. I have tons of photos from my previous adventures before going to Yogya, and now you gave me another reason to take a look at them, and edit them for publication. Just don’t forget to remind me to do this, aye?

    1. Addendum: I can see this as a potential for us to also hone our writing skills by describing the pictures that we submitted.

The problem lies, however, in that not all types of photographs are suitable for journal-like presentation, as the only genre that I can think about is journalistic photography, in which you report what you experienced with a photo, and a little bit of writing. Some pictures are just too abstract for description, and/ or are already self-decriptive that they do not require further explanations.

Whether we must write 150 words for every photo (Gasp! I hope not.) or not, would be up to you. Then again, I'm just giving an idea that's debatable.

      Delete
    2. You make some good points. Comment on the photos would not be obligatory but a "gallery" could become an interesting forum for discussion. Nor is there ever any obligation to write 150 words. However, if a student wants a post to be counted as one of their 60 [over the duration of the course] then it needs to be at least 150 words.

    3. Thank you sir for making this Photography section, it is great for photography enthusiast to share their passion in photography art. I have some quite number of photo ( a lot actually) that I would like to share here . if I knew that there will be this section I would bring my equipment here but sadly its my brother's so I can only share my old collection but still its fun to have a local forum where we can easily meet each other , unlike public photography forum that you rarely can meet in person with the members of the forum. I post some of my work on public photography forum too and I have experience that we can only interact with long distance communication .
But still I am very excited to be in this forum and happy that you create this forum I will make sure that I will post some of my work here , once again thankyou sir!

      From your favourite beer, Bintang

  4. It is a really nice from you Adrien, so we can have this photography section.
I love photography since I was in elementary school. I took so many pictures during my 19 years life. Well, my interest in photography has changed as time goes by.
I used to love human interest photography when I was in junior high, but after a year I felt that it was not so easy to take a picture of human. It is so hard to have a frame that is really unique and has a deep meaning.
After that, I was more into landscape photography and I found my interest to take picture with still object. Finally, I chose architecture photography especially minimalism one. I can not say everyone will be interested in minimalism photography, but I do. I would love to share my shots here and I hope you guys still can enjoy it by finding its own meaning. And it is really nice to know that some of you have the same interest like mine: photography. Should we arrange some time to hunt for the artistic frame together?

  5. It is really nice to have a forum where we can share a lot of things our photography. Photography is one of my hobby. I learned about photography about a year ago specifically when my father gave my sister a camera for her birthday present. When she got bored with photography, then I use her camera. I’m still an amateur photographer. I learned photography autodidactly by reading a book or asking some tips from my friend. I hope I can get a lot of tips and trick about photography in this forum.
I’m interested in landscape and animal photography (actually when I got nothing to do, I play with my camera with my dog as an object). That’s why when I go travelling to other city or country or a place which I predict I can get a beautiful scenery there, I always bring my camera.
Soon, I will try to send some of photographs taken by me to your email. Hope you like it.

  6. I like (and try to serious) in photography since i was in junior high school. The most kind of photo I like is human interest. So, I'm so agree with Talitha's idea to hunt photo in place like market. Beside, in Jogja, many markets are still traditional and I think it will make the photos look more 'speak'.
I just want to recommend how about for everyone who send you their photo, they also put the specification of their photo. I mean for the specifications are the camera they used, type of the lens, shutter speed, focus length, ISO etc. Because in that way, people who see the photo will not only enjoy the picture but also can learn from it. I hope there will be more photos displayed here in the EWS Photography Gallery so we can learn more from each other. Because for me, after knowing the basic for photography, 2 things I can do to improve my photography skill are take more photos and see other's photo. I take more photos to practice my photography skill and see other's photo so that I can learn another perspective, taste, and probably predict the technique

This an excellent idea. I don't know whether people will comply, but it's a good suggestion nevertheless.

Are you going to send me a picture that I can post?

    2. Good idea. From now own, I'm going to post the EXIF data from the images I posted. It's always a good idea for other people to see how the images were made so as to learn from them. As for now, Adrian, I'm sure that when you check the image’s ‘details’ under their ‘properties’ you'll be able to see the data that Syifa mentioned, hence you can add the camera information in the gallery right after the image's titles. EXIF data usually includes the camera model, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and focal length, but does not necessarily give out the model of the lens.

Also, it's really nice to see more contributions from others! It's been a while since I went back here, and I thought we'll never see contributions from those that have never uploaded theirs before. I'm definitely more encouraged to share more, and of course I'll add in the EXIF data of my photos.

  7. I always admire to the people who can catch a beautiful moment using a camera like the picture above. To catch a perfect moment I think it is need a lot of practice. landscape photography is my favourite photograph because when I look into it, I just feel like my head is being refreshed. I also like the photographer who likes to take pictures of human interaction as well.
Nowadays, people seems can easily taking a picture like a professional photographer because technology in the 20th century is very sophisticated. Why? Because today a camera is designed to make it easier for users to take a picture without having the ability like a photographer. Canon or sony camera are camera which commonly use in the society because the results of the picture is very good. I usually take a photo with canon camera or iPhone. I prefer use mobile phone to take a picture because it is flexible. I often take a pictures for my instagram account, just visit my instagram if you want to know ;)

  8. For me photography is one of many ways to talk and share about what they think with a single capture. Like a songwriter who talk what on their mind with lyric or novelist that share their ideas into novel. Inspire without word, I think this tagline suit for those who like capture inspiring moment. I really love the photo that captured by Ramona which is ‘Lonely Dreamer’ and ‘Memories of a dog- Sunset in Gali Air.’ The beautiful sky is captured awesomely!
Nowadays, photography is a hobby where it is easy to development. You just need a camera –whether it is DSLR, pocket camera or smart phone- then edit it and finally upload it into websites like Instagram, tumblr, or blog like in here. Many girls make their own fashion blog or some people who like travelling make their travelling blog and share some great picture there. They may not earn profit from it, but when others give compliment for the photo, they will feel very happy.

  9. I love photography. Why? Because there's always be something meaningful behind it. Just like when we see our old picture, at that time we will automatically memorize about what happened at that time. It was a good thing that we can memorize our memories through photography. To be honest, I really love the "Quiet Sunset at Karimun Jawa Island Indonesia" photo by Kristian Nugroho. I have never imagine how beautiful my country is even though i've never been to Karimun Jawa, and by looking at that amazing photo it makes me think that i should consider Karimun Jawa as my next holiday destination.

Actually, I am quite interested with photography even though I am still an amateur photographer. My interest has been changing as the time goes by, but now I am more into scenery and concerts. Usually photographers are always using their DSLR cameras or any other digital cameras. But I am different with them, without DSLR I can still manage myself to captured something beautiful with my phone camera. In my spare time, usually i like to upload some of my phone camera masterpieces in Instagram since it has many effects to make the picture looks more beautiful. If you want to know some of my photo collection, just visit my Instagram page @itshejin then you'll see many of it. Maybe that's all from me and thanks for your attention.

  10. When i was younger I wanted to be a professional landscape photographer. I used to be going out to tourism places with my family and took some scenery photos with my dad's camera. I like to take landscape pictures because it is sort of artistic and there so much meaning behind them. The effort to take good pictures is the challenge that I like to have when capturing the scenery. It has to be perfectly taken with suitable ISOs, shutterspeed, exposure, and other DSLR camera settings which I don’t really understand (and I’m still trying to). Many landscape photographers spend a lot of their money to buy some of high-end DSLR camera bodies and their accesories, such as grips and lenses. But it’s worth a lot. You can see some of their great pictures on their blog. It is sort of soothing when you look at those pictures while sipping some hot chocolate in the morning breeze.

    1. When taking pictures, all the technical details that you mentioned (ISO, shutter speed, exposure, et cetera) are merely the means to an end, meaning that they're merely used for the sake of getting the image that the photographer wanted. Granted, all those technical mumbo jumbo won't really be relevant when photographers discuss about a particular picture; they're more likely be interested in the motivation, inspiration, and out-of-camera methods on how the images were formed.

When there is a picture that's perhaps imperfect (within those technical details), we can always edit them using softwares such as Photoshop. Is the image too dark or too bright? We can adjust it in Photoshop. Is the color wrong, or is it perhaps not within expectation? Adjust it in Photoshop.

Some will say that getting it 'perfect' (either in terms of composition, or technical details) by the time we shot it is the best way to take a picture, but in reality this just means that you will have less trouble and will need less time editing the picture. Again, however, all of these are merely the means of getting the final image that we all really wanted.

In short, all I'm saying is that one does not need to have a perfect set of ISO, shutter speed, apeture, and other set of technical details. All we need is to be able to take the picture that we see, and adjust it accordingly through post-processing.

  11. Photography is an art, personally, and certainly is an art. I am interested in Landscape Photography. I willingly get up very early in the morning just for take some beautiful scenery in Borobudur. It was very cold, certainly, but my interest on landscape photography doesn’t make me think twice against the cold. I’ve been traveled to so many places around Indonesia, thankfully and took many photographs there. I also contribute in my father’s plan; photo hunting with him and his friends and I find it’s very interesting to travel, snap scenery, explore new place I haven’t been there, and so on. I don’t use many lenses since my concentration is only in landscape, I only use filters to play with the color. Maybe some of you who have same interest with me, we can have photo hunting together. I have some recommendations for photo hunting in Yogyakarta and maybe we can go there together. Thank you.

  12. I love photography, but I don't have any photography skill at all. I hope someday I will learn about photography. I love it because I think photo will lasts forever. There's a quote from my friend "memories changed, people changed, but pictures don't" . I agree with that quote, I still have my photo with my classmates when I was in kindergarten. I don't even know where are they now, I don't even know whether if they are still alive or not. I can't remember clearly about my childhood too. That's why my friend said that, people may change and memories gone, but it is true that photo will not change. With photos we can memorize our childhood, teenage life, or anything. Photos are very useful I think. If there's no camera, how can we record the important moment like the proclamation of Indonesia? That moment is very necessary to Indonesian people. If there's no photo or camera, probably Indonesian people don't trust the history. They may assume the history is just a bull shit or anything. But, with photos, they can trust the information that they have got before. Not only for that, the photography are needed in another situation like in the wedding perception, many photographers taking photos because people assume that wedding is a very sacred and it is only happen once in our life. So they think it is very important. Now, may social media provide their media to share photograph from people all around the world. For example, Instagram, Tumblr, and many more provide that service. We can see the picture from our friend easily, just type the name of our friend and automatically we can see his/her picture collections or even videos that they have uploaded before. I love all the pictures that have uploaded on this blog. I think just professional photographers can take a picture like those picture. Because those pictures are very riveting and enticing.

  13. "A Beauty Turn to Beast". The day after I had accident, I took a photograph of my beloved car. It was amazing that I could survive from it. When I reached 140 km/h, there was nothing, only a trailer truck. I have already given lights and horn warning not to turn and almost pass the truck but suddenly it turns right without giving any signs and the driver was pretending that there's nothing on his right side. I pinched and my car fliped to the right. Fortunately I wore sealt belt and escape by crawling up to the left side. People arround there was shocked and help me out by chasing the truck. After half an hour, Cops came down and arrest him.
About photography itself, I had started from the beginning of senior high school. I learned a lot by reading articles, magazines, and etc. Actually I have a large collection of photos but all was lost when my laptop was stolen. It's pathetic but I think there is nothing wasted in this world because everything has meaning even all things that already gone.

  14. It's really nice having a photograph gallery here on our ews blog. I decided to send 5 photographs to Adrian's email (well i hope it wasn't too many). 4 of the photographs were taken in Jogja and the model was a friend of mine. My real passions are photography and entrepreneurship. I almost applied to get into an art college (in photography major) so i could learn more about photography, but my mom didn't let me go there. She recommended me to get into FEB so i can be an entrepreneur in the future and she's cool if i take some photography class to learn more about photography. I think it's the best choice to take. I love photography because it freezes wonderful moments in life that we can never take back. I'm so sad that the pics of my childhood are nowhere to find. That's one of the reasons i promise myself to take pics of wonderful moments in my life so i can look back at those moments whenever i want to. Another reason is, i know that photography is my passion because i always feel 'something' when it comes to photography. I don't really know how to explain that but i'll try. When i see a very beautiful, breathtaking photograph.. It takes my breath away and sometimes i almost burst into tears when i'm looking at a beautiful photograph. My favorite photographers are Arseto Adiputra, Edward Suhadi (he's really inspiring! go check his blog: www.edwardsuhadi.com ), Juergen Teller, and Franklin Knott. I always want to work for National Geographic someday because i really love exploring the world and travelling, but i also love fashion photography because i love to do make-over to the models. I really hope i can learn more about photography really soon.

  15. Let me tell you why I love photography.

I love photography since I was in Junior high school especially in the grade two. At that time, my daddy gave me his old camera, Nikon D70s with lenses: 17-40 and 70-300. I just took photos with automatic mode because I don’t know how to use manual mode, AV mode and operate ISO, WB, focus, shutter speed, etc. Therefore, I joined in Comelgraphy. Comelgraphy is small community who want to be serious in photography. I got a lot of knowledge in that community. Sometimes, we discuss about how use ISO, WB, etc but it’s not theories, the seniors said, “Try to practice it. Try, try and try!.” I tried to be serious in photography and then my daddy gave me new equipments such as Canon 7D with lenses: 18-200,17-40 and 70-200. Photography is an art form. Every picture you take, is making an art. You can be really creative with your camera and you can express yourself throughout your pictures. A camera can freeze a moment and you can look back at that moment forever. Shutter speeds, aperture, ISO and composition are used differently by each photographer so that no two photo’s are the same – even if the idea’s are.
    Many types of photography:
    1. Macro – The art of photographing very small or close-up objects like insects
    2. Documentary – Journalism, events
    3. Black and white – like Photography without color
    4. Levitation – Photographing something float in the air (no gravity)
    5. Nature – Landscape, animal, etc
    6. Night – to capture images at night
    7. Modeling – Photographing the models
There are many more types of Photography, maybe you can try the unique one in photography, levitation photography.

    Thank you for reading.

    1. Hay dude I really curious about your photograph community, you mention comelgraphy, where is the community? Is they gather in Yogyakarta?
Did you mind if I ask you about your interest in photograph?
May be sometimes we can go somewhere and hunting picture together, it was quite long time for me not take some beautiful scene.

      Delete
    2. Yeah Comelgraphy. It is a small community gathers in Pekanbaru. It is not an official community but it just like forum for student in senior high school and junior high school who like photography. So we share and discuss bout photography in there. Sometimes we hunting picture together.
Of course not, Kristian. We can share and discuss together. Maybe we can hunt picture together. I heard a lot of views in Yogyakarta: desert of Sahara, etc.
What types of photography do you like, Kristian? Do you want to try levitation photography? But I’m not good in edit photo.
And do you want to join a community of photography in Jogjakarta? I heard KFJ is the good one. KFJ is community of photography in Jogjakarta. KFJ is one of big communities in Jogjakarta. Or maybe you want to join in UFO? UFO is like community of photography in University of Gadjah Mada.
Thank you for reply my comment, Kristian.

      Delete
    3. You mentioned UFO in our university. I’ve visited their booth, and based only from what I heard, the club is not really ‘appetizing’, at least for me. The club pretty much puts all their efforts on film photography, which I think is a really good thing since they try to preserve photography back to their roots. I sometimes use film myself, and may get some knowledge by joining them.

What’s holding me back from joining them is that they put strict deadlines into releasing your works, meaning that you will always be constrained by their set of rules. This kind of workflow sort of conflicts with my own workflow, in which I prefer to be lenient to my own shots: whenever I feel like it, I’ll put effort into my photos, not for the sake of schedule, but for the sake of my photos themselves, hence it might give better results (at least in my own opinion). If you’re really new, the strict rule might give you the much needed discipline in order to take photography seriously, but for others it’ll be too limiting.

But hey, you SHOULD call me up on other photography clubs out there that provide more freedom for its members. I might be interested.

  16. I have always enjoyed looking at photographs, as I flip through books and magazines, I usually only see the pictures really thoroughly and just scan trough the texts. I especially love two kinds of photographs; those that tells a story and those of a wonderful view.
People say that a picture says a thousand words, and I totally agree with that. A single photograph can tell a whole story, and the story could be different for different people. A photograph could have a variety of meanings for different a person, that is how magical a photograph could be.
Photographs of landscapes and views really pleases me, it shows how beautiful our world truly is. It makes me want to go to that location right this second. Through photographs of landscapes, I get to know the beauty of the place, its like traveling around the world for free.
But as much as I enjoy looking at photographs, unfortunately I’m not able to take any nice photographs myself, though I hope to learn so someday.

  17. Some of the photos here are stunning. I really like "Golden Hour in Jakarta" by Ferris Arrafi Silitonga. The colors and the composition are superb; it really captured the image of Jakarta in my mind. It would be great if the photographer added the details of his camera apparels and the exposure.

On another note, I'm really glad this section is put up since I rarely find myself picking up my camera these days. I'm not a professional photographer but I do find the joy in eternalizing moments with my trusty old camera. I have recently started to take an interest in Lomography and bought two cameras, but I haven't really taken my time to go out and use my new cameras often, let alone my old one. It's probably because I haven't found myself a photography buddy, because I usually prefer going out photo-hunting with others so that I don't stand out as much in the crowd; having said that, I'll submit some of my photos for your viewing pleasure. Please refrain yourself from gagging in disgust as I present you some of my rather tacky photography work later on.

    1. Hey there, Romy. First of all, thanks! I showed the picture on my Facebook and there are lots of people that liked it, so I might as well share the picture here for you guys to see.

Cruising around Jakarta as it approaches sunset, I took a peek at the skies that, to my surprise, weren't as cloudy as usual. I then asked my dad to go to the bridge that connects Kuningan to Menteng so that I can get the shot. I've always dreamed of taking a picture on top of the bridge, and the time of the day couldn't be more perfect: it was during the weekends with not that much traffic going around, and the skies weren't as gloomy as usual. I took the picture right before the sun touches the horizon, showed it to my doubting father (which to my surprise, liked the raw picture) then rushed home to edit the photo to the best of my capabilities.

I shot the scene with my Nikon D7000 at f/11, 1/50 seconds, at ISO 100, and at 37mm. I used the 'meh' Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens (for the lack of lenses I brought at that time). I edited the photo using Lightroom to bring out the details of the dark areas. I metered for the skies, hence the foreground will be very dark and hence why I brought up the foreground's details using the HDR method. I also tweaked the contrast of the skies a little bit to get it to pop out.

I hope that clears things up! Let me know if you have further questions.

  18. I was so attracted with this topic, photography describe me of beautiful scenery of my whole life. Actually when I was younger I wanted to be professional photographer but now that dream has changed into amateur photography hobbies. As we know the price of professional camera was so expensive but its worth to professional photographer and maybe its not worth for me that not understand how to use it. With only my brother DSLR camera I try to express how I was so interested to photography. Usually, my cellphone is one of my things that can express my interest in photography. Travelling is one of my way to express my hobbies in photography, when travelling I often take some pictures. It just like scenery, a person, and self-portrait maybe. I was so jealous to professional photographer, they can take wonderful picture easily. So to all professional photographer please continue my dream.

  19. I have loved photography since I was in junior high school, and I started with a digital pocket camera. The first reason I love photography was because I love travelling, and I think it will be too bad that I can not immortalize the beautiful scenes that I saw. At the second grade in my senior high school I finally got my DSLR, and I studied hard about photography since that time. I was frustrated when I first begin learning photography, I can not take great picture, the picture that I took always seems so bad. I got so many blurs, noise every where, plus I did not pay attention to the horizon. But when I got my long vacation after the national exam in senior high school, I studied a lot about photography. I often come to gramedia book store to read every photography book available there, but I did not buy many of that book, I only buy 4 books that I think will very useful for me. Ever since I was trying to master photography a lot, I know many rules about photography, many ways to take great picture, I know many filters, and I already know many professional way to take picture after that.
Now photography is my hobby, because I can take my best picture for landscape, still life, branding, and architecture. But now I’m still facing the difficulty of taking great picture of a model.
Hopefully this year I can finally master model photography.

  20. You know what? This website is really cool! It has its own photo gallery. Well, I have seen it from the first time I open the blog. Some of the people posted the very great picture. The first picture catching my eyes was Bintang Rahmadi’s picture about the boy and the girl that one. I love to see the picture. It seems the couple is really romantic and very happy.

The pictures become more interesting every week. Now, I opened this gallery and I find out the Bintang Rahmadi’s picture that almost the same story with the first picture. It is about love! I love to see the picture about LOVE. Well, it is simple, but really nice, about love in the school year. I bet that everyone ever have it.

I also love the “Sunset in Karimun Jawa” by Kristian Nugroho. So cool! Is it edited or not? The one titled “Last time Keukenhof Holland” also awesome. I really want to visit there. If I can, I want to bring the tulips home. But, I don’t want to destroy it, so I just forget it.

"Memories of a dog - day at the beach" by Ramona Just is cute. I love the dogs with the sunglasses. It is really cute! Super-duper cute! The sand color is also nice. Was it in Bali?

Well, I love to take pictures, but I think I am not as good as the people who uploaded their photos here. I really want to love photography. It just seems cool you know.

    1. If you said that you love some of the pictures here, then consider yourself already loving photography! Sure, you might not be as good as others in here, but being 'good' in any form of art is subjective and relative, meaning that regardless of how much technical skills that you have in doing art, nothing beats the raw passion of the artist in pursuing their vision into their art. Part of doing art is because you love the medium and that you like what you do, so why not?

If you do have some pictures that you have taken by yourself, why don’t you try to upload some of them here for us to see? I’m sure that the point of uploading our images here are not to show-off how good we are from each other, but rather to be able to learn from others by knowing how they get their shots.

Yes indeed! I couldn't have put it better myself! [except I would have said "to show-off how good we are TO each other" not FROM].

  21. As one of the viewers, I can say that all of the pictures that are posted here are really great. I mean it. The pictures contain deep meanings. It feels like the pictures can talk. I’m sure that every one of you guys really has the talent in photography. I’m always interested in looking the other new pictures that are continually updated. I always impressed by the pictures that are posted here. They are really gorgeous. The picture that I really think that it is pretty incredible is the one which is owned by Kristian Nugroho, the title of this picture is "Last time Keukenhof Holland". It is a really beautiful picture. This picture surely makes me want to go there right away. He beautifully takes the picture, and the scenery is remarkable. It is so colorful, loads of green, and a bit of white, red, purple, blue, etc. So it is really eye-catching. I hope you guys can continue to provide great picture to inspire us the viewers. Good luck!

  22. What a good photography by those IUP students. I was so impressed looking at their picture, even I think that was taken by NatGeo's photographer. I started to stare at some pics for some seconds to imagine the situation there and it was successfully carry out my imagination. Personally I like to take a picture or to be a amateur photographer, like when I go to some beautiful place like in Canada, in the small town named Kamloops, I was just took the picture from the natural view, I took the picture of snowy muntain which is wild-nature in Canada, I took the picture of a clean lake with double rainbow view reflected on the water. Everytime I find any good view I like to take it as a picture, we can use to recall some moments if you miss it sometime. Those pictutre above are so good and those all are good to be uploaded in NatGeo's site. Cool.

  23. Hi there, my name is Heza Ramanda, and first of all, I would like to give my compliments to those who participate In this photography corner of this website. All of these photos are good, they are nice and in some pictures, gives a relaxing atmosphere. And I even downloaded a few of these pictures to be used as the wallpaper of my phone. And even though I don’t know a lot about photography, but I really admire this photos. And also, this photography corner in this site, adds more beauty to this site, which is good. My favourite photo is the ‘Sky And Sea” by Haris Pradana, the beach is extremely beautiful. And it makes me craving for beach. And the Nocturne by Romy Ali Abdurahman is also good, it shows how pretty the city in the night, and the sky is so beautiful. And I guess that’s all that I can tell, Thank you.

  24. I really enjoyed looking though the EWS Photograph Gallery. I’m influenced by my father that also love photography. Photography is an art and a media that we can use to tell a story. I like the Nocturne by Romy Ali Abdurahman, it shows the pretty night sky (well I’m not sure where that photo is taken, but wherever it is, it’s beautiful). What I also like about this gallery is that the photos came from all around the world. Jogja, Jakarta, France, Brazil, and even The Middle Easts. It really shows the diversity form all the IUP students. Although I haven’t been on the places that posted in the gallery, I feel that I was there. So, a great photo or a picture is not just a story, but a great photo could makes us feel that we are the one who is taking that picture.

  25. Every person has their own perspective about photography. I love to take pictures since I was in first grade of Junior High School. At that time I only used a pocket camera when I went hunting photos. I also love to editing pictures in Photoshop software while at that time there were still few of my school friends know how to operate it. Thus, I started to run a small business for editing pictures, designing brochure or invitation and other else. In addition, after four years begging to my parents I finally got my own DSLR camera. My first one was Canon 1000D. I successfully convinced them after winning my first photography contest and came out as the runner up with just using an old pocket digital camera. I was actually a bit surprised because there were a lot of skillful participants with advanced equipments include the lenses. I was like a lost munchkin who try to enjoy the thing she’s doing. I heard them talking like a pro about ISO, speed and many others that I literally didn’t understand at all. However, that didn’t stop me. For me, the Chinese proverb that said “Picture speaks a thousand word.” is true, because it is not all about the techniques. Well, even though it is great to learn it and improve our skills. But, the sense that you can feel from a picture and resulting to a beautiful art piece to be seen.

  26. Does anybody else think that Sheba's "The Dangerous Red Rose" is a subliminally erotic image?

  27. Wow! To be honest I haven’t paid much attention in the EWS photograph gallery. But after looking through the gallery, I can only say that IUP students are lucky to be having a lot of talented people in photography. Those photos are in the same quality with professional photographers’ quality. Some photos are taken in Indonesia, and some from other countries. Well taking photos is a thing that people always do while travelling. If you travel a lot, then you will have a lot of photos in your collection. I have an idea for the IUP photographers; hold an exhibition. Maybe we should have a place in FEB to put those photos so people can see them. They are all beautiful and demanding a great quality in taking them. I’m not an expert in photography, I don’t even understand about it. But I can understand the beauty of the photos. I always enjoy looking at great photos. I hope you all could become great photographers in the future.

  28. After I saw all the pictures from “The EWS Photograph Gallery”, I can say that all the pictures are very beautiful and all the photos give me so many inspirations. Although I am not very good in photography but I like very much to see all of these. My three favorites are, first is “Everybody Getting Older Sooner” by Kristian Nugroho , second is “Hang Glider” by Gerald Prayogo and the last “Sunset in Prambanan” by Aldino Mohamach . I like Kristian Nugroho’s photo because when I read the title and the photo, for me even if I do not see the title, I could see what the photographer mean with the photo of the old woman. I chose Gerald Prayogo’s photo because the landscape combination of the hang glider and the green tea trees are very beautiful. The last photo that I ranked was Aldino Mohamach’s photo, I ranked this photo the last is not because it is bad, it is same like the other photo but the other photo that I rank first and second are more beautiful just in my views. Just to the point, I like the third one because the sunset views and the combination of the candi Prambanan are beautiful .

  29. I love photography but am horrible at taking pictures. I guess my creativity rate hasn’t reached that level yet.
Looking at the EWS photograph gallery, I am stunned. The photo’s looks great. I can’t judge the photos professionally (like the angle or the effect for example) because for me really, as long as they are pleasant to look at, I consider it a job well done.

My favorite photographer from this gallery is Kristian Nugroho and the picture or photo that I like most from him is “Quiet sunset at Karimun Jawa island Indonesia”. It looks like one of those photos’s that is published in the National Geographic magazine. The picture brings out that warm relaxing feeling and also other than it being a pleasure to look at, it also makes you want to actually be or go there.

Other than that, I’ve been starring at Nabila Sheba’s “The Dangerous Red Rose” photo and can’t seem to find the subliminal message. Someone help me out.

  30. Photography is an art and practice of creating durable images by recording light. As I know, the camera which is used by profesional photograhpy is DSLR. DSLR is a digital camera, but most of the time when people use the term especially if it is referring to something else besides a DSLR, they call it a “regular” digital camera. Many people know that the price of DSLR is very expensive, but for photography lovers it is not a problem to buy the camera to be used in every moment. I think, all the people love and like photography, because if we are at an event with friends or family, some people want to take a picture for memorable. I love photography since I was senior high school. I had a photography course about 2-3months but I’m not too addicted to become a profesional photography. Based on this gallery, many pictures are very nice and beautiful pictures. I hope I can learn more profesionally with my friends who’re more professional in photography skills.

  31. I did not really pay attention to this topic before. But after I take a look of these pictures, I can see many potentials in this gallery. To be honest, I am not a photographer and I cannot take picture as good as those who post their photos here, but I enjoy looking at the photographs in this gallery. And there are some photos that catch my attention, but mostly from Kristian’s photos. Kristian’s photos are my favorites. The one titled “Quiet Sunset at Karimun Jawa Island Indonesia” is very beautiful. The color combination of the orange from the sun light and the blue sea are really good. And also the one titled “Last Time Keukenhof Holland” is so pretty. That photo make me want to go there and pick some flowers from the garden, especially the blue one, so pretty. Last but not least, “Hot Summer in Brazil” by Tunjung. From the picture I can tell how good and hot the summer in Brazil. I really like Tunjung’s photo too.

  32. I’m not really good at photograph; I’m not really good at commenting photograph either. But so far, I enjoy looking at those pictures. Some photos are really inspirational. They show something, I don’t know, it’s amazing. The color is wonderful, I don’t have the best word to describe, I just admire those pictures.
And the moment they capture, it’s just perfect. What’s on my mind was; how could they capture those photos at the right moment? Where did they capture it? Was it hard to adjust the camera? How do you adjust the lighting? Haha
One picture that catches my eyes is “Birdman” by Ferris. There’s an explanation about the camera, I guess. But I don’t understand any of that. I think that’s what makes the picture looks astonishing. How you took the photograph at the exact time when the bird flew, it’s so cool!
Maybe some of you think it’s not that good, but I’m an amateur. So I’m just saying what’s in my mind. Thank you.

  33. Looking at these photography makes me happy and I enjoy every picture in this section. I appreciate those photographers who has taken these beautiful picture. I always wonder how they can take amazing pictures like what they contribute in this section, because I can’t do any art photography; I only use photography as a documentation. But, seriously I really enjoy this topic, I can feel the moments they serve in the picture.
If I can specify which photo I really love, I would pick "Last Time Keukenhof Holland" by Kristian Nugroho and I love another Kristian’s photos too. I love the colourfulness of the photo, it is really eye-catching.
To facilitate more, I think we should have an IUP photo hunting group. So all of IUP students who have a passion in photography or just want to take the landscape or moments together. If there is a hunting group, I might be join, I will learn how to take photos to the other IUP students who are better than me in taking beautiful photos.

  34. Some people say that photography is an expensive hobby, because If you want to be a professional, a SLR or DSLR is not enough, you will need so many equipment to support your photograph in order to make it good, but I think it’s also an interesting hobby for some people, If you love to get out doors and love to see a new things, you should do photography. It also challenges your brain to be creative. You can start it by choosing which point you want to start to take a picture, If you can find a good point the result will be good and the opposite. After that, you can put them on the internet, or get prints, or do something you like with them. I think, Photography also teaches us how to see the world in many perspective. It also can be a reflection how we see the world. We can see a scene and by taking a picture, we can share it with everybody who didn't take attention to it.

  35. This EWS photography gallery has been showing out beautiful pictures since Mr. Coen started this blog. I want to comment particularly for the picture taken by Aldino Mohamach. The picture was taken in Candi Ratu Boko, where people can enjoy the beauty of sunsets. A lot of people go there in order to fulfill their wants to see beautiful sunsets. I’ve been there with my friends, and one of my friends was Aldino himself! Believe it or not, this picture was only taken using iPhone 5 that is used by Aldino. I went there with my friends, and Aldino was missing for a couple of minutes. Turned out he was searching for the right spot to capture the sunset. He climbed a little hill in order to do so. This is a very beautiful picture, consider that this picture was taken only by phone. One of my friends and I tried to do what Aldino did with his phone, and we failed. Aldino had his own technique in doing so and he got it right. I really love that picture, and I also want to capture the beautiful sunset in the exact place by myself. Finger crossed that I can do it in the future.

    1. Hey there, Fauqi. It’s nice to see that there are more people that are drawn more into this medium of art. It’s not really a rocket science in order to be able take beautiful photos. All you need to do is to have the passion and the basic technical knowledge of photography. The technical knowledge is pretty much the basic staple to photography, with the addition of a lot of practices and trial and error. Passion, on the other hand is required so that you have a driving force into wanting to take a good picture, as well as having the eyes for beautiful scenes to take pictures of. What’s the use of knowledge if you don’t have the motivation at all?

If as you have said it that you’re really interested into taking pictures, grab a camera and learn the basics now! You certainly have the wants, but now it’s up to you if you want to take that motivation into the next step.

  38. As the EWS course is drawn to a close, I would like to add my final words into all the works put into the gallery. First of all, it’s a pleasure to be able to see pictures that others have uploaded into this gallery. It’s interesting to see how everyone in here have different visions as to how they do their photography, and in how they achieve what they want to present in their pictures. It goes to say that the varieties in backgrounds, themes and results make for a great observation, and allows people like to broaden up my perspective on how photography is done by others, which can also serve as an inspiration as to how I can also do something similar in the future.

I would also like to thank the audience and readers who took interest in my work. It actually gave me some hope that my works aren’t that useless after all! A huge thank you also goes to Adrian for allowing all of us to share all of our works here.

After visited this article for months ago, I never visit this page again after now I visit this page and see a lot of changes and updates in this topic which is there’s a lot of new totally beautiful artistic photography. I was shocked when I keep scrolling continuously in this article and I found Aldino Mohamach’s photo. I’m so agree about what Refqi saying in his comment. Actually, Aldino took that photo in Ratu Boko Palace when our Friday evening trip together. I see when Aldino took that photo and that make me shocked Aldino took that photo with only his Smartphone Camera. After Aldino took that photo I haven’t saw it again until I see it now and literally so amazed with that picture. It was so wonderful.

  40. just like Saxa, this is my second time commenting and looking through the EWS Gallery. And I want to say that the gallery really grew and has attracted a lot of the students who have the passion in photography. What I like about this the diversity of all the photos available in this gallery. When I went through it the second time, I'm starting to see more diversity in the photos. There's one photo taken in a beach in Brazil, and then there's another photo taken from in the Lourdes Church which miles away from Brazil, an then the newer photos in the gallery shown the beauty of the Javanese culture. All of this diversity is why I think, I should give it one more appreciation to this gallery before the end of the semester

  41. This time I want to talking about one of my photography entitle colosseum Rome. I took that picture just utilize pocket camera, its lumix digital camera with 12 megapixels resolution so the image is not really awesome. In that photograph I want to share the atmosphere in Rome especially in colosseum which very popular in the word. To get best view without any human on in is very difficult consider that the place is very crowded. I want to share a secret with all of you that actually beside the dustbin there is a man standing, but because photoshop is very amazing I can easily get rid of that man, and the picture become better.
Every picture I take I alway use raw resolution, I rare utilize jpeg resolution on my dslr, this is to get the best resolution and more over to make it easy when I edit the photo. For example this colosseum Rome photo, I first make the color become intractive and then just sharpen the picture. Some people ask me how to produce the great picture while they using the same dslr series, the secret is I use picture style on my camera, the name is velvia 50, you guys can get it in internet and it's free like from kaskus or fotografer.net.

  42. My personal favorites is the silhouette of Candi Ratu Boko by Aldino Mohammad and Gerald Prayogo’s “Contrast In Life”. Apart from the fact that I went to Candi Ratu Boko with him, I couldn’t get a picture as good as this (yes, as you guessed I am no where near a photographer). He brought a tripod where I only have my iPhone, which is also not the best comparison. He is so in to photography that he wanted to stop the car on our way there just because he thinks the scenery was really nice at that time. This pictures gives a certain warm feeling from all the orange color of the beautiful sunset, I also like his similar silhouette picture of Prambanan.I love Gerald’s picture because it seems to have an important meaning behind it. In the streets we could see the gap of the wealthy and the poor, even though the man in that picture looks like he is waiting for the bus, assuming he’s in the working class, but that’s how I see it. While that little boy looks like he is praying and looks miserable in his outworn clothes.

  43. Photography has always been a part of everyone's life. Even more nowadays, photography is not an unusual thing where people can take a great photo only with a smartphone and later on edit the picture by using applications in their smartphone. Having a DSLR or SLR camera is not a must thing to do now because of the high-technology era we are facing now.

"For me, the Chinese proverb that said “Picture speaks a thousand word.” is true, because it is not all about the techniques"
I agree with Ika Mayang's opinion above. As now people can share photography in social media like instagram, techniques is not becoming a major problem because as the picture is nice and beautiful, people will like and they don't care anymore about the techniques.
