Is English or Mandarin the language of the future?

Mandarin-English dictionary

By Jennifer Pak - BBC News, Kuala Lumpur

Those who believe that English is important for their children's future either send their kids to expensive private schools or to Singapore, where the government has been credited as being far-sighted for adopting the language of its former colonial master.

Nearly three-quarters of the population in Singapore are ethnic Chinese but English is the national language.

Many believe that this has helped the city state earn the title of being the easiest place to do business, by the World Bank.

However, the dominance of English is now being challenged by the rise of China in Singapore.

The Singapore Chinese Chamber Institute of Business has added Chinese classes for business use in recent years.

Students are being taught in Mandarin rather than the Hokkien dialect spoken by the older Chinese immigrants.

These courses have proved popular, ever since the government began providing subsidies for Singaporeans to learn Chinese in 2009 during the global financial crisis.

"The government pushed to provide them with an opportunity to upgrade themselves so as to prepare themselves for the economic upturn," says chamber spokesperson Alwyn Chia.

Some businesses are already desperate for Chinese speakers.
Lee Han Shih, who runs a multimedia company, says English is becoming less important to him financially because he is taking western clients to do business in China.

"So obviously you need to learn English but you also need to know Chinese," says Mr Lee.

As China's economic power grows, Mr Lee believes that Mandarin will overtake English. In fact, he has already been seeing hints of this.

"The decline of the English language probably follows the decline of the US dollar.

"If the renminbi is becoming the next reserve currency then you have to learn Chinese."

More and more, he says, places like Brazil and China are doing business in the renminbi, not the US dollar, so there is less of a need to use English.

Bilingualism

Indeed, China's clout is growing in South East Asia, becoming the region's top trading partner.

But to say that Mandarin will rival English is a "bit of a stretch", says Manoj Vohra, Asia director at the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Even companies in China, who prefer to operate in Chinese, are looking for managers who speak both Mandarin and English if they want to expand abroad, he says.

"They tend to act as their bridges."

So the future of English is not a question of whether it will be overtaken by Mandarin, but whether it will co-exist with Chinese, says Vohra.

He believes bilingualism will triumph in South East Asia.

It is a sound economic argument, but in Vietnam's case, there is resistance to learning Mandarin.

The country may share a border with China, but the Vietnamese government's choice to not emphasise Mandarin is an emotional one, says leading economist Le Dang Doanh.

"All the streets in Vietnam are named according to generals and emperors that have been fighting against the Chinese invasion for 2000 years," he says.

Tensions flared up again last May over the disputed waters of the South China Sea.

Anti-Chinese sentiment means that young Vietnamese are choosing to embrace English - the language of a defeated enemy. Many families still bear the psychological scars from the Vietnam War with the United States.

Yet there is no animosity towards English because the founding father of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, made a clear distinction between the so-called American imperialists who were bombarding Vietnam and the American people, says Le Dang Doanh.

Many Vietnamese who have lost family members during the war are now studying in America, he says.

"We never forget any victim in the past but in order to industrialise and normalise a country, Vietnam needs to speak English."

The Vietnamese government has an ambitious goal to ensure all young people leaving school by 2020 will have a good grasp of the English language.

But it's not hard for young Vietnamese to accept English. For some, the language offers a sense of freedom in Vietnam, where the one-party communist state retains a tight grip on all media.

In a public square in central Hanoi, a group of young men are break-dancing to the pulsing beats of western hip hop. Ngoc Tu, 20, says he only listens to English music.

"The Ministry of Culture has banned a lot of [Vietnamese] songs and any cultural publications that refer to freedom or rebellion but... English songs are not censored."

It is debatable whether English or Mandarin will dominate in South East Asia in the future. There are arguments for both on the economic front.

But culturally, there is no dispute.

Even Mandarin language enthusiasts like Singaporean businessman Mr Lee, says that English will remain popular so long as Hollywood exists.

The success of movies such as Kung Fu Panda, an American production about a Chinese animal, has caused a lot of anxiety in China, he says.

There have been many cartoons in China about pandas before, but none had reached commercial success, says Mr Lee.

"The moment Kung Fu Panda hit the cinemas everybody watched it. They bought the merchandise and they learned English."

  1. I agree that knowing more than one language, especially either English or Mandarin, would help us a great deal in the business industry. As globalization occurs, English is almost mandatory nowadays. People claim that it is because English is one of the easiest languages to learn, some say it’s because European countries have colonized most of the world. We receive the education to access information through media and books, to put our career forward, to travel more easily, gain technical knowledge and so on.

Where learning Mandarin is also a choice in certain schools, these visionary school’s hope their graduates will survive and lead the Asian market if they atleast understand either Mandarin or English. It would be such an advantage to be able to communicate with other people on higher level, for example fluent Mandarin. It would not only impress them, but it will help us through our business careers. It is one of the hardest languages to learn, with different alphabets and dialects. But the choice is yours; by learning them you certainly have dodged a bullet from certain erros in the future of miscommunication.

  2. "But to say that Mandarin will rival English is a "bit of a stretch", says Manoj Vohra […] They tend to act as their bridges."
Still many people don’t speak Mandarin and won’t be able to learn it in a couple of years as it simply is one of the most difficult languages in the world so how could it already rule over English? In my point of view I totally agree with Mr Vohra that Mandarin will “just” coexist. It is an important but not necessary prerequisite to be successful in China or with Chinese people. I guess Chinese people are very proud of their economic success and therefore rather would do business with people granting the respect to them by speaking Mandarin than with people who don’t consider it as important to learn. I also agree with Tsamara that Mandarin due to the different alphabet and the thousands of different signs can’t be learned in a few years. I am not sure if I for myself will learn one day Mandarin because of the bad correlation between the time spent for practicing and the language skills and business advantage as an output on the other side of the equation.

  3. "As China's economic power grows, Mr Lee believes that Mandarin will overtake English."

I believe that Mandarin will overtake English sometimes in the future just like what Mr. Lee believes.

China believed as an economic country that has the rapid number of economic's growth in the world. China which have the a big number of citizens in the world has become one of an economic power in the world. As we may know and experience, all products we use now mostly made in China. Started from household appliances, clothes, electronics and so many other goods that were made in China. Companies in China must have brilliant business strategies in making this happens. China's companies take chances in taking over the most of world's goods production by their ways.

China as a country and as a part of world society has the big influence in the economic's world. When most of all goods are coming from China, world's society required to build a relationship with China in order to fulfill the needs. There is an idea living in economic society, whether it must be easier to build a good relationship in engaging a business partnership if they have same understanding. The same understanding can easily start from: language. The China's market is now spreading so wide and I believe one day everybody will need to know Chinese to mantain their life.

I studied Mandarin Chinese during my year in Taiwan. One of the reason why I had chosen Taiwan as my destination for exchange program is because, I want to learn the language: Mandarin Chinese, because I know that the language will be really important in the future.

By understanding in "How important Chinese Mandarin is", I hope the government will put Chinese in their education curriculum, especially in Indonesia as a developing country. If Chinese developed and operated by schools and also universities, I believe this ability will be a very useful in life.

  4. Which would be our future language, English or Chinese? I found this to be a rather confusing question, even though I never thought of it before, this topic keeps getting in my mind. Despite the fact that English has unofficially been our international language in the aftermath of World War II, it slowly seems to become our official international language. In my opinion, there are some aspects of English which make it the prefered language. Firstly, in contrast with Chinese, English uses roman letters that are used by most communities around the world. Other than that, Mandarin letters are known to be complex, even by their people.

Moreover, the conciousness of English as our international form of interaction has in effect, formulates the thought of it as being easy, if you dedicate yourself to study it. Nowadays, everyone could claim that they are able to teach english to someone as there are many sources to learn English that they can use. Hence why, to end my post, I want to conclude that Chinese would not be our international language, based on the fact that English has been our international language for generations.

  5. In my opinion I agree that someday mandarin language will overtake English.
As what this article talking about, we can see that economic in China is growing rapidly. Many product was made in China. For example when we go travel to another country then we would like to buy merchandise, many of this merchandise was made in China. Another example we can see that so many electronic product was made in china, like tablet, hand phone, walkman, headphone, air conditioner, and many other electronic product. From that reason we can know that many seller come from China, and commonly they offer their merchandise by use mandarin language.
I once traveling use emirates airline, the safe flight instruction was show for 2 different languages, one in English and the another one is from Mandarin language.
As a business student i think it will important to study Chinese language. We know that wide link is one of the factor to be success, and as we know that China is almost dominated all the economic circumstance in the world so we can expand our business by knowing Chinese factory. More over we know that one of the factor failure in business is fail in communication, and to make it success we need to be understand each other what exactly we talking about so that we need same language. We know for many years that English is our international language, but if we need to deal with Chinese people while they can not speak in english then we will fail to expand our business. We can say that it is Chinese people fault that they can speak english, but how if this Chinese person has a big contribution that we need to expand our business? We very need him, may be we can hire a translator but in specific case like bargaining for secret business we can not trust in translator. Because of that reason I recommend people to studying Mandarin language, because it will be important very soon.

  6. Wouldn't it be obvious that English and Mandarin will be the language of the future? Looking at today's society, English dominates every aspects of communication. It's the easiest way to communicate people, especially foreign people. It's an international language, and it's easy to study English.

On the other hand, while Mandarin doesn't affect everyday activity, it is one of compulsory language of business. Why is that? Because in my opinion, when you dive into the world of business, you also dive into the world of Chinese people. In the global market, China has taken over the king's seat for being the biggest marketplace in the world, exceeding the United States. Even now, China is the "company's world bank". To put it simply, foreign companies who sell their products in China always enjoy their high-booming profit there: most of the companies' sales there, such as Louis Vuitton, Marks & Spencer, and Aston Martin, are often record-breaking annually. There are also product which is sold specifically in China only, such as BMW 3 series long wheelbase version, where no other countries get the same treatment.

So yes, English and Mandarin would be the language of the future. I have no doubt about it, but to say that Mandarin would exceed English? Oh wow, my stereotypical mind says it's a really bad idea. It's already difficult to keep in pace with someone who speak English really fast, and Mandarin is already difficult to learn, so listening to someone who speaks Mandarin real fast would be like listening to a boring minister who just keep talking and talking even though no one is around him to listen. In business world, it's certain that Mandarin overtaking English will happen, for the reason I already explained above. The question that comes out of the blue is: are we ready to face this drastic change? Will Mandarin affect out business performance? Can we overcome the problem of unable to speak Mandarin?

China could be very proud about their language and business market being able to par with English, but even so, it doesn't mean Mandarin would be more important than English in there. If they were so eager about making their business recognized internationally and they can't speak English, where that language is universal, then that's when they have to kick the bucket, abandoning the international plan. In Indonesia, we use English to speak with foreign businessmen or investors. Mandarin, however? A few people can, but it's unlikely to be used to speak to even a Chinese businessman. Singapore can use Mandarin and English to do business, but most of the country in the world would still need to rely on their English skills to do business with others.

So, to summarize, yes, Mandarin and English is the language of future, but for business world, it's better to stick on English, since that language is one of the leg to start a business.

  7. It is so tangible that Mandarin will be the international language. As we can see, the economic growth in China is rapidly broaden. I could say , one day the business market will be dominated by China.
We need to learn Mandarin because it will be useful one day. It does not mean that Mandarin will rival English. Instead, we should learn Mandarin and English. Both of them are good to be learned. Some people like to say that English is better than Mandarin because Mandarin is hard to be learned. I had learned Mandarin and i know it was really hard then i quit to learn Mandarin. But I regret it now. I want to learn Mandarin again although i have to start from the beginning.
In my opinion, learn some languages is something you have to do, if you want to be a businessman. We do not have to learn only Mandarin and English but also another languages. Because in the business zone , we have to make a relation with another people not only from our country but also foreigners. It will be more easier when we could speak their mother languages. I am not saying we have to be able to speak it fluently but at least we could speak it a little. And I am sure those foreigners will appreciate us. It will ease our attempt to make a relation with them.
So, i say yes that we should learn Mandarin and English. If we could better we learn another languages instead of Mandarin and English.

  8. Well, I think Mandarin is going to be the future language. China is now has the 2nd biggest economy on the world and it’s one of the G20 countries. Which mean China has the economy power in this world. When something happen to the economy in China it will affect the world’s economy. Now, there are so many businessmen from China. They have the capital to start up a new business in the world. China is known for their trading ability. In order to make the business run smoothly we need to learn Mandarin. We can have a clear communication between them and us therefor the possibility of miscommunication that could happen is less. However learning English is also important as well. From the recent news, U.S economy is now getting better since the 2008 economic disaster. We can see from the value of U.S Dollar getting higher than ever. For $1 we need to pay around Rp. 11.000, - to get it. It’s even bigger than the value for Dollar in 1998 disaster. This indicates that U.S economy is now getting better and growing also. But in my own opinion we need to learn both language because, adding more language to our self surely will help us in the future and there’s no big deal to learn English or Mandarin.

  9. Indirectly English has become our international language from long time ago. English use to communicate with people all over the world. For example in Indonesia the labour market puts a high value on proficiency in English, as seen in the English language job advertisements in the national broadsheets as well as the language qualifications demanded by much less prestigious posts advertised in local newspapers. As in most other South-east Asian countries, English has assumed a gate-keeping role in diverse work environments. Some others countries like India or Singapore use English as their second language, it’s means that English is world wide language. But nowadays chinese people seems like take over the world because the current number of Chinese people increasing. So it’s make sense that business in country like Singapore or China using Mandarin as their language to communicate with others. Maybe using Mandarin is one way to protect teir business in secret because Mandarin has high difficulties to learn rather than english. I believe in the future Mandarin and English will be side by side as international language

  10. English or Mandarin? I think both of them are important. I agree with Anne that English has become our International language since long time ago. But now on, we have to realize that Chinese is going international. It can be seen from all of the products are made in China, from Gadgets until Clothes. Some of the products are use Mandarin language to explain about the function. Nowadays, Mandarin is really important especially for business because of the Chinese products. There are big opportunities to develop it more. Nevertheless, English is important as well. If we cannot speak English, we will be lagged behind others.
I am Chinese and sometimes I get ashamed because of I cannot speak Chinese. I merely know a little about the words. When I went to Singapore, which country uses English for their national language. Singaporean usually speaks Chinese as well and they often ask me with Chinese. I don’t understand at all and I just nod and ask whether they can speak English or not. I really want to be able to speak Chinese. Hopefully, I want to join the Mandarin class this year before it’s too late. For me, Chinese people have to be able to speak English; on the other hand, other people also have to be able to speak Chinese.

  11. I think both of them are really important and play the important role in this globalization era. English has become the international language since long time ago. And several people told me that mandarin is very important too because china plays the important role to international. Many technologies made by chinese workers. China aslo has an ability to make a thing is better than the original one. Many successful entrepreneurs in Indonesia are chinese. I think chinese people have a good and straight plan ahead and they are also work hard in their job, that's why several chinese people are more important than indonesian haha that's a fact . That's why we have to study the mandarin language, because not only in Indonesia, but also Malaysia, Cambodia, or another countries have chinese wrokers that play important role in that country. I have many chinese friend in Jakarta, they can speak mandarin language fluently, and I have no idea when they're speaking each other because I can't speak mandarin language. I only know one sentence, it is "wo ai ni" haha . My father told me that at least I can speak chinese or japanese, just because in INdonesia many big companies are lead by chinese and japanese. So, I think both of english and mandarin are very important for us.

  13. English become global language because of the economics that controlled by western area. Most people in the world know and use English. There are also many foreign companies and people have to understand English to communicate each other. However, the economic progress of China make it looks like equal with developed countries like USA. This is because China already makes politics that give many positive impacts in many sector, especially in economics and culture sector. They are good in business. They always have businesses that gain more profit. Therefore, normally for the students those want to study Mandarin besides English. We can learn the gains of China by studying Mandarin. But the thing that makes Mandarin difficult is the Kanji. English doesn’t use Kanji or other symbol. The conclusion is I don’t agree if Mandarin will dominate in future economics. In my opinion, English has ability in many sides, for example in science and technology.

  14. We can't hide the fact that China imports so many things to other countries. Phone, TV, radio, toys, even plates are from China. So many global companies make their factories in China. No wonder, China reached more than 9% per year in the economic growth, making China has the important role in the economic world.

Mandarin language is the main language of China and used by more than one billion people around the world, so by learning Mandarin, we can communicate with one-fifth of this world population. About 30 million foreigners are currently studying Mandarin and Chinese government estimates that the number will increase in few years ahead.

Many schools already put Mandarin as their local content in their curriculum to push their students to be able to speak or write Mandarin properly because they want their students learn Mandarin. They believe that one day, Mandarin will be the global language just like English, even though personally, I don't really believe it because I think, English will always be the international language, but I can't deny that Mandarin is one of the important languages to be learned.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If i can choose between English or Chinese Mandarin to be the international language, i would still prefer English. Why? Because, nowadays, English is used in everywhere and every occassion in the world. English is still the international business language. Yes, we can see together that China’s business is getting stronger and stronger, but I still cannot see how Chinese Mandarin will replace English as a international business language. English, these days, have been used for so many years, most people use and understand what’s English, but if then Chinese Mandarin will someday come to replace English, it will take too many time too, since we have to learn in from the very beginning and other things. And I don’t think that European will agree to replace Engilish with Chinese Mandarin, because, personally i think that learning Chinese Mandarin is not as easy as learning English. But, despite all of these reason, if we can learn Chinese Mandarin, it would be very nice. As we see together, China is getting stronger economically, their business activity is the strongest in the world. So, one day i believe China will be one of the biggest countries in the business world, but i don’t think their language will do so.

    ReplyDelete
  16. About Chinese or English language, well both of them are really important, but in this cases i think that Chinese language will never take over English language domination, why because Chinese language it’s difficult to learn in terms of the way they are written, and not many people know how to write Chinese language so the domination of English language will never fall, English language is easier to understand and it is also our international language that we used after United Nation established.
Maybe Chinese language will not dominate the world, but will dominate in other things such as electronics, economics, etc. Right now we could see Chinese economics are dominated the world after European has a monetary crisis.
So my opinion is learn those two language if you can, because in business world you will need mandarin and English , even you can’t speak it fluently but at least you will understand if someone speak mandarin to you.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Both English and Mandarin are important. Almost all people around the world use English to communicate with each other, especially with the people from other countries. English can be used to build a bridge between two entirely distinct languages. It has been learned and used in all kinds of activities, in education, economics, politics and etc.

“Some businesses are already desperate for Chinese speakers.”
Compare to English, Mandarin is actually almost equally important. I have witnessed by myself how some businessmen have desperately looked for Chinese speakers. This is due to the fact that China is really rising up now. Chinese people are all over the world and they involve in almost all kinds of business, from food, toys, clothing, gadgets, and even in manufactures.
I agree that it is a possibility that Mandarin can be the language of the future. But in my opinion, it will not as widely used as English since it is one of the most difficult languages to learn and most of the children around the world are still unfamiliar and not exposed to it.

I have personally learned Mandarin and I admit it is very difficult to learn. Maybe it will be easier to learn it in an environment that has been exposed to the language. But now all over the world, outside of the business environment and the Chinese speaking regions, there are only a few people that are exposed to it. So I think, it is a possibility for Mandarin to be the language of the future but it will happen in maybe twenty to fifty years from now.

  18. I agree with Silvio’s opinion. I believe that someday Mandarin will play a big role as the international language and maybe could overtake English position. Well, I can say that because I have some reasons.

First, right now China is one of the biggest countries and one of the most powerful countries in the world. We couldn’t be naive and said that the economic growth in China is nothing. Even most of United States’ securities were owned by China right now. And, US also considering China as the country that they have to be careful with. It can be seen in how China’s decision can affect US economy in their latest economic policies such as SOEs (State Owned Enterprises).

Second, we can’t deny that Chinese is one of the biggest ethnic in this world. If you go to the other countries you can easily found the local-Chinese people in that country. And, most of them still use Mandarin as their daily language, like Singaporean and Indonesian Chinese outside Java.

Based from those reason, we can see how important the Mandarin will be in the future. Even right now, if you want to expand your business or you want to buy some machine for your factory you should be able talk in Mandarin. For example, the participant of the biggest annual “food expo” in Jakarta mostly Chinese and it’s such a disadvantage if you can’t speak Mandarin.

Okay, you may say that Mandarin’s alphabet is hard to learn so not many people would be able to use it but I think it’s depends on your basic language. Maybe for others who lived in Japan and Korea might find the English alphabet is more difficult than the Mandarin’s alphabet. Otherwise, right now China has their own English alphabet version of their “Hanzi” which is “pinyin”, so that argument is not valid anymore I think.

Well, overall it’s just my opinion. So, feel free if you disagree with me.

  19. “So the future of English is not a question of whether it will be overtaken by Mandarin, but whether it will co-exist with Chinese […]”
I totally agree with Vorah. English is the predominant language in the world and the most important language regarding international business affairs. However, the Chinese economic power is growing steadily and in 2009 it even overtook Germany as the world export champion. No question, the Chinese language will become more and more important and already now, universities – also in Germany- take this development into account by offering Mandarin language courses and study programs with a focus on China. Nevertheless, I don’t think that Mandarin will ever replace English as the predominant language. There are a lot of obstacles and difficulties in learning the Chinese language. It has more than 6000 characters and a different intonation of the same word can alter its meaning completely. For example: The syllable “ma” has four different meanings. Depending on the intonation it can either mean “mother”, “horse”, “hemp” or “to insult”. So probably it’s best not to mention one’s mother in a business talk, just to be on the safe side. English instead is such an easy language to learn. I think in the future both languages, English and Mandarin, will be coexisting and complementing each other in the world of business.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It is still going to be English. Why is that so? Because, Mandarin is notoriously hard to learn. You're only going to have a basic grasp over it after years of arduous learning. Knowing that Mandarin consists of the same sounds pronounced with different stresses. And the writing system is abstruse even for the native speakers. In Mandarin we write using symbols instead of alphabet. Even the simplified Chinese characters is so damn hard.

All of the comments above stated that from Economic point of view that China can not be ignore, which is true, but does that mean we have to learn Mandarin? I do not think so, because in reality it is not native English that learns Mandarin but more likely to be the other way around. And also it is more efficient (the time, the effort, etc) to have native Mandarin learns English rather than vice-versa. Though the end result is the same, you get to communicate.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, I agree that both are really important, but it’s not as much as that mandarin will take over English right now. As we know from the fact that English is the only universal language that has already used for a long time. Many people try to learn it in order to follow the globalization. In our country, English has important role in our education life because it becomes one of subjects in our national examination. Besides that, in our country English proficiency is really needed to get a good job, it’s proved by the qualification when we want to get a job. Additionally, English seems easier to be learned rather than mandarin. Mandarin has so many different alphabet that absolutely difficult to be remembered, but almost all of our businesses are related to china, our goods are made in china, moreover Apple –The most popular gadget in USA- are assembled in china although the design is original from the USA. It seems like china will be a big businesses someday, so it’s likely that mandarin will take over English, but it will happen twenty or thirty years from now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I’d say Mandarin and English are both important. The economic power of America is a lot stronger now, although China is growing rapidly. English may be ruling for now, but Mandarin will surely overcome it. It is proved by many schools now teach students with Mandarin and English both at the same time.

I personally think that it is better to master both of them, because firstly, it is impossible for most of people worldwide to study Mandarin and English in instant, so we can be the bridge connecting them. Secondly, the more language you speak the bigger chance for you to do trades worldwide. Germany is growing really fast too, why don’t we also learn Deutsch (German)?

“The country may share a border with China, but the Vietnamese government's choice to not emphasise Mandarin is an emotional one, says leading economist Le Dang Doanh.”

I disagree with the statement above, because every person on this planet has freedom to choose what to learn. If someone wants to improve his/her skills, it shouldn’t be a matter. And I really agree with Mr. Ho Chi Minh’s way, to distinct between the language and the “person”. We don’t need to hate the language, it helps us communicating, not conducting war.

We can’t deny our own language Bahasa Indonesia is drowning. So, it is also our responsibility as young generation to introduce Indonesia to the world. We can learn as many language as we want, but must not forget our identities.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think English is still going to dominate. English has been dominating and being a global language since long time ago. It is going to be hard to change it. Like Chintya said it is really difficult to learn Mandarin. Mandarin is much more complicated than English. You have to learn the whole new symbols and characters.
Though, it is not impossible for Chinese to be the language of the future (but not in the near future). The fact is that Chinese people are everywhere doing their businesses and they are very good at it. For example, in Indonesia, many Chinese people have their own business, from small businesses to huge and successful companies. They can easily spread their language as well.
Moreover, many companies made their products in China. China is overpopulated, therefore it is easy to get human resources and pay them with low salaries. This way a company can press the capital and gain more profit.

  24. I think in future, English and Mandarin are both important. I believe both of them will take over the world. I don’t think about choosing one of them since English has dominated in world for long time. And also, English has strong foundation to be world’s language as long as Hollywood is still dominating in filming industry. I agree with Vohra statement in the article that says, “So the future of English is not a question of whether it will be overtaken by Mandarin, but whether it will co-exist with Chinese,”. I think this statement is true. It’s not easy to change world’s language. We have been using English for about hundreds years. And many people can’t speak Mandarin because they haven’t learnt anything about that, just like me. And Mandarin is a little bit confusing. Now, we know that China is growing up. It has big role in international business. We can’t avoid that someday maybe, we will speak Mandarin. But, it will take long time to make Mandarin become world’s language. So, I think we will still use English for our International language. But, there's a possibility that Mandarin will be world's language for few years later.

  25. English and mandarin are both necessary to learn. It is not about mandarin language will take over english but as we know, China economic power is growing rapidly. In my opinion english will still be the international language. But if we want to have a good business opportunity, it is better for us to be able in speaking mandarin. As we know, almost all of the goods that we use are produced in China. It is because the labour fee there is cheaper than other country. If we able to speak mandarin, the people there will put more trust to us. Although the chinesse are able to speak english nowadays, they will assume that we respect their culture and seriously want to do business with them. I admit learning mandarin is very hard. The pronounciation is difficult and we have to say the word with the correct tune. Also the chinesse character is hard to be written. We have to follow the steps in writing it. But seeing the importance of mandarin language in the future, i think it is worth to be learn.

  26. Anything can happen but Mandarin is very difficult to learn. As we know, English has 26 letters in the alphabet. And how about Mandarin? it has 20,000 letters, fantastic. But on the other part of this world, there are the languages such as: Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese are use the Chinese characters as the basis of their writing system. The language of these country also adopt the letters and words from Chinese character. So, people from Korea or Japan normally only need two until four years to speak mandarin because they already know half of the characters. Otherwise, the foreigners who come from the other countries, whether from Asia or America and Europe need more than nine years to speak Mandarin, (note: if they study really hard.) So, I think everybody will continue to learn English and Spanish because they use the Latin alphabet, and already has basis in most countries in the world. Perhaps, from a business point of view, Mandarin will become more important in the coming years, but I have to say English will still important in the world. But, it’s good to learn at least a second language because it can gives us a sense of cultural diversity and insight about different ways of thinking, or being able to talk with foreigners in their own language.

  27. I agree that both English and Mandarin are very important to learn. But I still think that now (especially in Indonesia) English is more important. If we travel to another country around the world, they still use English as an international language to tell information. For example, in Indonesia the English word ‘exit’ is more common to use than the word keluar (Indonesian language for exit). Try to remember when you were in cinema. You will find ‘exit’ above the exit door instead of ‘keluar’ or Chinese language for exit.
I can’t deny that Mandarin is also important, especially in business matter. China’s economy is growing rapidly and gave big impacts to the world. It makes Mandarin become an important language to learn. But Mandarin is not easy to learn. What makes Mandarin even harder to learn is the alphabet/character. English use Latin alphabet that is easier than Chinese character. Even if another country also using Chinese character, such as Japan and Korea, they read the character differently. I don’t think we can use it as a reason to say that Mandarin is also easy to learn (for some country).

  28. English and Mandarin are the top two known and used languages in the entire world. Being able to speak and write both English and Mandarin would be very useful and beneficial in communicating with future business partners. By being able to use the two languages, we would be able to communicate with almost anyone from anywhere.
English has been the must-know-language for ages. Every school around the world teaches their students English. In Indonesia, even in the schools for less fortunate kids, Basic English is taught. Whereas Mandarin is mostly being taught only in international schools, though it is growing pretty rapidly around here.
In my opinion, years from now, English would continue on in being the number one language used around the world. Since it uses roman letters, thus it is easier to both learn and understand compared to Mandarin, where we have to learn and memorize new and different characters. Another difficulty when learning Mandarin is its usage of intonation; saying a word with the wrong intonation would bring out a different meaning.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If you look at the difference between English and Mandarin you noticed that you write the two languages totally different. In English they use letters and in Mandarin they work with characters. So I think it is very hard to learn them both.

China becomes more and more an important country for the world economy. So you would say if you want to do business and build a relationship in the future, you have to learn Mandarin. But I do not agree with this.

At this moment English is the most important language over the world. And except for the Chinese and Islamic languages every other language use letters instead of characters. So the majority of the people use letters that is why I think it’s very hard for this entire people to learn Mandarin. And will English also in the future the most used language. Of course it’s a plus if you can speak Mandarin especially for building relationships. But I think English will always be number one.

  30. The first thought that comes to my mind after reading the article, what does trading language has to do with international language. It may be true that to do an international trade you have to use international language. However that is not always the case, in Europe the international trade between its members is not in English language. There are few countries in Europe that use their neighbour’s language as theirs. Thus if they understand common language they do not need to use English language, as the international language.
In my opinion Mandarin will not be the next international language, this is because, first it is difficult to learn all those characters, second it has different sounds for every character. Hence most non-Chinese spoken country would find it difficult to learn and prefer English as the International language.
As Mr Lee say “English will remain popular so long as Hollywood exists.” Thus we can assume that for a language to become an international language it has to be popular and use around the globe.
In summary international trading does not decide the international language, since it only uses the language that both parties have agreed. On the other hand a more popular language than English will have higher chance to succeed English Language.

  31. I think, it is so obvious that Mandarin are most likely to be the next leading language in the world after English. By far, Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the universe. There are over 800 million people speaking this language. It is such a big number and it is not impossible that gradually Mandarin might overtakes English in our future business world. I believe having an ability to communicate with this language would bring us benefit, remembering the economic of Chinese-speaking countries are rapidly growth such as China, Singapore, Taiwan, and so on. So for us who want to expand career in international range, learning Mandarin is probably would be worth it. Compare to English and other languages, Mandarin is one of the hardest one. But according to the source I read, although the written is notoriously difficult to learn, the spoken is relatively easy. Unlike English, Deutsch, and some other common languages, Mandarin has no plurals, tenses, conjugation, and only has a few grammatical rule.

  32. I agree that nowaday, as the world is "wider and wider" we have to at least learn and know a bit of foreign languages like Mandarin, and Arabic languages. I think, iin the future Mandarin would not overtake English, but Mandarin would be used as often as English, because we know now that China which is the "birth-place" of Mandarin has been one of the powerful economic country.Where economic needs a communication. So, sooner or later many people will learn and use both Mandarin and English languages especially in an act of business. Moreover now many private school adopt and thaught both Mandarin and English. Like my school in Batam, I had 4 hours for learning the langauges. 2hours for english and 2 hours left for Mandarin. Many families in Batam are using Mandarin to speak to each other, thus we know that slowly many people learn Mandarin. Mandarin is more and more used in a growing country like Singapore, Taiwan, Taipei which would be the central of economic growth. But I think Mandarin is harder than English, because in each word we have to remember how to write the word, I just remember how to write "wo" which means "I''. But in the future, Mandarin will be as leading language as English.

  33. I certainly agree to the argument of mastering English and Chinese at the same time is one of success- key. But to state that Chinese is going to replace English in the future; I do not see this is happening whether it is in South Asia or other regions. Not any soon or in the long run. Beside Chinese would manage to keep up with their English capability very soon; many other consideration also shall be brought in mind, for instance about Vietnamese’ unfavorable to Chinese as an important due to their hostile history, although their language share the same root. Furthermore Chinese language and its particular fonts and grammar are relatively not an easy language to learn. In comparison, that English is more suitable and more reference to get, then it will English to stay popular. Lastly, how does a country would depend on major relation only with one super power country and even willing to adopt its language as a main to replace well-known internationally spoken English? I suppose all nations would prefer to balance relation with as many resources as possible for their prosperous and stability purpose. To understand Chinese would be a beneficial skill and temporarily will give a value added for those would have to deal with Chinese. But it is not necessarily to replace English, since Chinese society will master English as we do

  34. Nowadays we’re living in a globalization era which means there’s no borders for a country to communicates with other country. To communicate with other country we can use the global language. Global language refers to a language that is learned and spoken internationally. It’s characterized not only by the number of it’s users and second language but also by it’s geographical distribution also it’s use in international organization or diplomatic relations. Back to the topic, I think it’s a good thing that we should learn or know more than one language because it will give us a great opportunity in business industry. In my opinion, both Mandarin and English are equally important. Just like in my high school, I had a Mandarin class. My teacher always said that learning Mandarin is very important and we have to start to learn it by now because in the future there’s a possibility that Chinese will lead the world’s economies also overtake English as the global language. However, in my own opinion I don’t think that Mandarin would overtake English as the global language since it’s not as easy as English. I had spent 3 years to learnt Mandarin but still I can’t wrote or spoke Chinese properly. In contrast with English, the English grammar is generally simpler than most languages, the spelling and pronounciation aren’t as hard as other languages, and it’s easier since it has 26 alphabets while Chinese has more than 10.000 characters.

  35. With the globalization, the current economic situation, and the growth of the world's population worldwide, I don't see the reason why both English and Mandarin would not be the language of the future. In fact, Both languages have been taught to students as early as in the primary, or if not, the pre-school, and both have been actively used worldwide, especially for the people who participate in international affairs.
However, even though Mandarin is also considered as 'language of the future', I do not see the reason why it should, or would, soon replace English. While it is true that China has economically thrived with great outcome, and that its population has rapidly grow, it doesn't necessarily mean that more and more people would turn to Mandarin as the main international language. I've been studying Mandarin for years and I still find it to be a very difficult language to learn due to its strange characters and set of grammars.

  36. Is English or Chinese would be the future language? It’s a tricky question. We can really sure which one is our future international language. As we know, now English is our international language. But you can see also that Chinese is slowly attracting many people from all around the world to learn. They both have positive and negative side. As for English, we already used it so it is easier for us to learn it. But the growth population of Chinese people has made amend for the language. A lot of Chinese people who can’t speak English make others who need to work with them learn Chinese. If it’s continued, there is no doubt that Chinese will also be our international language. But it doesn’t mean that English will be sidelined. After all English has been our international language for a long time. For me, it will be interesting if Chinese become an international language. Because if Chinese become an international language, it will not only be a pride for Chinese people but it will also be a mark that Asia is raising.

  37. For me English and Mandarin both are important languages. As we know, English is an international language. Everything is in English, for example an instruction of an electronic, how to use it, how to set it, ingredients of a snacks, foods, and drinks, and many other things. And when you travel somewhere that the people do not understand your mother language, you have to use English to communicate. But I think Mandarin is important too. Because now electronics, vehicles (cars, motorcycles, buses, etc), pens, and many others are made in China. And usually an instruction in of an electronic, how to use it, how to set it is in Mandarin. I think Mandarin will be international language like English, everybody will know and learn Mandarin in the future.

Some people think that Mandarin is very difficult to learn. And I agree with it. I had learnt Mandarin when I was in primary school and junior high school. And I still can understand about Mandarin haha. Because for me it’s difficult to memorize the meaning of the words, the tone of every word, and how to write the words.

  38. “We never forget any victim in the past, but in order to industrialize and normalize a country, Vietnam needs to speak English." I think people in Indonesia feel the same way as Vietnam people do. Way back then, kids in Jakarta or any other cities in Indonesia, spoke with their regional or Indonesian language. Now, many kids in Jakarta speak English as their first language. “So the future of English is not a question of whether it will be overtaken by Mandarin, but whether it will co-exist with Chinese, says Vohra.” I agree with this statement. I think mandarin won’t overtake English language. It will be difficult to change our International language into mandarin, because we have been using English as an international language for a very long time. And it becomes a habit for us to automatically speak English to foreign people that we met. But because China’s economy grows pretty fast, it is a big chance if maybe in 30 years or more from now, our international language will change into mandarin. But for now, I think we’ll continue to use English as an international language. Thank you for reading.

  39. In my opinion, English will still be the international language in the future. Because English has been the language of the world since a long time ago and it hasn’t changed. Learning English is one of the compulsory things to do by most of students nowadays. Possibly, the amount of people who master English is increasing every year. If we don’t speak English, it will be hard for us to communicate with other people from other countries. These days, mandarin is becoming a language that is used in more than one nation. Because of the amount of Chinese people, Mandarin is now being one of the languages that people want to master. Mandarin has defeated French and German language and has come close to become the international language. But English has been our international language for generations. I think it will be difficult for Mandarin to take the place of English in this world. The thing I can suggest to you is: Learn both. If you can master both English and Mandarin, it will be easy for you to communicate with other people from different nations.

  40. In my opinion, the international language that will be spoken all over the world in the future is determined by the political and economical situation around the world in the future. English itself become the world international language because at that time, America are dominating the world’s politics and economics until they become a superpower country right now. The issue about applying Mandarin as an international language itself shown after the growth of the economics in China although other than that, there are also some who claimed that Mandarin can become the international language because the number of the population in China is the biggest in the world. So, in my opinion, Mandarin can become the international language if they can expand their influence in politics and economics around the world and English can maintain their position as the international language if America and European country can maintain their dominance in the world.

  41. In my opinion although now china leading our economy now I don’t think mandarin will overtake English as an international language because English it’s still dominates the way of many world peoples communicate but I think mandarin and English will be a two of important languages to learn in the future and I think it’s good to learn many languages not only English, mandarin , and Indonesian but also many languages in the world. So it will make us have may advantages to compete in a tough free competitions ahead because we will enter a free world when everybody can compete with anybody all around the world so learning languages will make you more confident to beat everyone and win the competition. But I think learning mandarin it’s harder than English because the words is not alphabetical which is not common for a most of people which not a native chinese.

  42. In my point of view, the reason why English is so well known and has manifested in becoming the “international language” is because the two last great powers of the world were Great Britain and the United States of America. Their global influence grew tremendously, especially after the world wars. This can be seen from the other European countries (speaking English).

China’s great military power on the other hand was last witnessed over a millennium ago; in the years before Christ. The reason that their language is being spoken around the world nowadays is due to their population problems which occupy 22% of the world’s population (1,566,180,000 people). The other reason is China’s rapid economy growth which is expected to soon surpass America.

Nowadays people are arguing whether English or Mandarin will be the international language of the future. Personally I think that English will still remain the international language. I say this because English is much more practical to use and is easier to learn: compared to Mandarin. Not to mention the latest devices and media such as Phones, Tablets, Line, etc. all use English.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mandarin is the language of the future? I seriously doubt it. I think Mandarin and English are really important to us but I don’t see Mandarin will be replace English as the International Language in the future. In my view, Mandarin is very difficult to learn. For example: the alphabet of them, English language has 26 letters in the alphabet and the Mandarin language has around 20,000 letters. It makes hard to learn Mandarin. You have to memorize about 20,000 letters to become native speaker. In contrast, English is mercifully easy for the foreign learner than Mandarin. English also uses a simple and flexible grammar system.
However, I suggest to you to learn both of them (English and Mandarin) because English and Mandarin are useful for our future. For example: numerous companies have made English and/ or Mandarin ability one of their employment requirements. Therefore, knowing them absolutely makes the job seekers more competitive in the job market.
Thank you for reading my comment.

  44. In a globalization era like now, I believe both English and Mandarin plays an important role in the business world. It is true that China’s economic grows rapidly and very fast from time to time. Also, with the fact that most population is being dominated by Chinese people, making Mandarin is as important as English. Unfortunately, I strong disagree if Mandarin becomes the language of the future. Mandarin is a very complex language. The writing system of Mandarin consists of symbols rather than a simple alphabet. Comparing to English, it is fortunately easy to learn as a second language. Unlike many other languages, English lacks of gendered nouns, a trivial linguistic aspect that can be hard to master. There is no need for a person learning English to remember whether this noun is for a female or a male. I think this is one of the main reason why English become a global language.
To summarize, I think all languages are equally useful in their own way. English is not completely better than Mandarin but it is certainly a better global language. However, Mandarin is an important contributor to the world’s linguistic spectrum. But it’s simply not the language of the future.

  45. Although in my personal opinion Mandarin will not replace English, we cannot deny that it still has a chance. We know Chinese has the biggest population in the world which its people spread around the world. China’s trade has also spread greatly around the world. Product that made in China is not just exist in developing countries but also developed countries. China can make products that have wide range varieties of quality, from the worst quality of product until the best one. And most of the people who relate with the China’s trade are not using English. That’s why based from these facts, we cannot say it’s impossible for Mandarin to replace English.

On the other hand, even though Mandarin has wide possibilities, in my point of view, people who use English will not let that happen. For example, Kungfu Panda movie that has mentioned in this article, I think this is part of their strategy to decrease the possibility for Mandarin replaces English and maybe there are other things that they’ve done to decrease more and more. English isn’t just used by the British and American right? And I’m quite sure most of those people will deny learning Mandarin. Even now, they prefer to use translator rather than they learn Mandarin. Even though Chinese people have the biggest population, is it bigger comparing to the people who use English? But, there is no disadvantage if we learn Mandarin though; instead it’s a good thing to prepare for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree with the article saying that English will not be replaced but we still have to know Mandarin.
In my opinion, it’s so possible that Mandarin will be our future language. First, like the article already mentioned, the Economic of China grows rapidly. All of our products that we use are made in China; all electronic products are assembled in China. To make a better agreement on business with the Chinese, I think it would be better to speak in their language rather than English.
Another reason that makes Chinese is the future language is because this ethnic is everywhere. We could see them in every place that we visit. They’re in every region and every country. China town is in every corner of every country. Well, the point is, Chinese is around the world, and their language might spread quicker and wider.
The final reason is because it’s not that hard to learn the language. It’s quite fun to learn the word’s stresses and the symbols. I learnt it when I was in junior high school, and I completely understood the basic. And now, since I don’t learn it anymore, I only know few words and few symbols. Lol.
So, my conclusion is, there’s a lot of possibilities that make Mandarin becomes the future language.

  47. I personally believe that both English and Mandarin are similarly important. I can’t really decide which one is the language for the future, because a lot of people speak in English and Mandarin now. I also think that we can have a lot of advantages by learning both of the languages than learning only one of them. My father says that being able to speak in other language is very important. Firstly, I’m encouraged by my father to learn English as my second language. I have to improve my own self by having the ability to fluently communicate in English. After that, I’m encouraged to learn other language. My father offers some options, like Mandarin, Japanese, or Korean language. He says that knowing more language is really useful for me, especially for the future. For example, there will be a situation when I want to apply for a job after I graduate. If I have the ability to speak in many languages, it will be very good for me. I will have plus points because of it.

  48. Well as mandarin become more successful and powerful than ever in the international business and trading world , no wonder more people study mandarin as their second/third language. I think mandarin become a global language is too visionary , because this language is hard to pronounce and it has so many vocabulary from changing the intonation of one word, I cannot imagine all European people talking to each other in mandarin for their everyday life because me as an Asian itself has difficulties saying a word in mandarin although I have learnt it for three years in high school, well maybe for some people and Chinese people itself can master mandarin quickly but not as fast as people who learn English as their second language except for Chinese people who use mandarin in their daily lifes. The point is , mandarin as a global language is impossible to be realize in next 2 or 5 years but mandarin as a international business language is possible because these people must learn it or they cannot communicate with other business in china in order to make a good business relationship

  49. Although currently the Chinese people ruled the world and the economy, I don’t think that the English language will be replaced by Mandarin anytime soon. The linguist may predict that Mandarin will be spoken by almost everyone in the world by now, considering the massive growth of China’s state of economy and how China is now leading the world. But to change the international language is not as easy as flipping a piece of paper, there must be something to begin all of that and you can not expect people to just accept the fact that the international just change like that and expect them to learn it just like that.
Even now with English as the international language, and it has been the international language for years, but now many people have mastered it, many people does not even know how to speak this language, and still struggling to learn it one step at a time. To make Mandarin as the new international language anytime soon is not possible in my opinion, but to make Mandarin as the international business language it is very possible, because many businessmen have familiarized themselves with Mandarin and they will use it very often if the economy kept on being ruled by China.
