This column will change your life: the unexamined life might be worth living
Sometimes it's best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors.
Earlier this year, two American bloggers triggered a global media convulsion by embarking on what they called a "mirror fast": covering the mirrors in their homes, and shunning mirrors elsewhere, in an effort to reduce what one of them called "the overriding self-consciousness that's taken up residence in my psyche". Since the social pressure to conform to ideals of beauty falls mainly on women, I can only guess what it's like to be so aware of one's appearance: I assume it's related to what I feel whenever a badly-angled photo reminds me how astoundingly bald I am. But for the fasters, the experiment proved a liberation. "All the other interests in my life – my goals, passions, friends, family, favourite hobbies, etc – have attracted the energy and attention I used to give to my looks," wrote Kjerstin Gruys, while Autumn Whitefield-Madrano said she felt "calmer and more serene". They'd pulled off an ingenious psychological trick. In a world obsessed with appearances, it's impractical just to decide you're going to think differently. What they'd done, instead, was to deny themselves the feedback that fuelled the fixation.
Which is striking, because almost every other approach to health and happiness assumes the opposite: that more feedback is always good. The way to get fit, we're told, is to track miles jogged and weights lifted; to get slim, you track calories; and the first law of time management is to keep a detailed log, to see what you're really doing with your day. Reflecting an increasingly popular approach, the website moodscope.com uses mood-tracking to combat depression. There's an entire "personal informatics" movement, mentioned here previously, whose members use smartphones and other devices to turn their lives into data, so as to identify patterns and make improvements. (Join the fun at quantifiedself.com.) But mirror fasts are a reminder that more feedback isn't necessarily for the best.
In a parallel exercise last month, Steven Corona, a tech entrepreneur from South Carolina, "unsubscribed from the clock": "I dropped my watch right into the garbage. Shut off the glowing green-blue digital clocks that seem to piggyback on every appliance known to man..." He switched his iPhone to a random time zone (and did, he admits, continue to use its calendar to notify him of appointments). Much mockery followed: clock-fasting, critics rightly noted, wasn't an option for those who had to show up at an office by 9am daily. Still, as a compulsive watch-checker, I was inspired. After a few disorienting days, Corona says, his stress levels plummeted; he lost himself in projects, and learned to "read the sun". Insomniacs are advised to hide their clocks, because what doctors call "nocturnal time-monitoring behaviour" is relaxation's greatest foe. Corona simply took that principle to its conclusion.
You, of course, may have no hang-ups about mirrors or clocks. But it can be illuminating to ask if you've got other sources of feedback you might be better off without. Bathroom-scale readings? Bank-balance checking? All have their place. But all are also subject to the problem with personal feedback: once you've developed the habit of measuring something, it's hard to resist the conclusion that that thing matters. Maybe it doesn't. (And even if it does, maybe intuition would serve you better.) Sometimes, there may be data about ourselves we're better off not knowing.
Taken from HERE.
Hello, my name is Heza Ramanda and I would like to give my comment on this topic.
ReplyDeleteStop all the clock to develop intuition is interesting. And the fact that stating there are something we better not knowing is also true. Because knowing that kind of data only bring sorrow and grief, furthermore, torture yourself. But it is kind of extreme to stop all the clocks for all that, and it is really hard to be done because we require clocks as a reminder. And it will be hard to live a day or two without it. Especially someone with tight schedules. I know, the reason for that is noble, but still its too extreme to do things that way. And I guess by not looking at the mirror, time, et cetera, will prevent someone to be motivated to increase their appearance.
And I guess that is all. Thank you.
In this article, it is said that sometimes it's best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors. Reading this sentence truly makes me want to try it. I really can’t leave without those things, especially wrist watch. Like this morning, I don’t know where I put my wrist watch. I have looked for it everywhere, but I can’t find it. So I don’t use it to go to the campus for the additional class. I feel a bit strange. I don’t usually go to the campus without my wrist watch. I feel not complete, maybe because it has been a habit for me to use and check it every time. But really, for once, for a day, I really want to try living my life without any pressured about the time, the deadlines. I really want to switch off my phone, and be alone. I want to have a private time only with my own self. I really want to avoid mirrors. I don’t want to think about people’s thoughts about me. I really want to be selfish once, and live my life without any worries.
ReplyDeleteThis also happened to me. I used to always use my wrist watch too. And I do feel strange. And other things I can’t live without are my phone, and mirror. Cause whenever I feel bored, I always need my phone. Even just to check the time or date or any unimportant thing. I ever tried once, living without my phone, and well. Its not really bad as I thought. I’m feeling like, my life so much peaceful instead when I’m with my phone. But, after that, I never try to live without my phone again, cause I need to gather some important information from my friends in college.
DeleteBut, I know, sometimes I should have my time for only me, and become a bit selfish. Because, in that way, maybe I can enjoy my life for a while. Apart from all the chaos and know my self better, and no worries.
I really like the idea in this article to cover all mirrors or stop all clocks. Because I think it is true that for example appearance is a very important thing in people’s lives and they are concerned about what they look like. Not knowing what you look like and hence, after some days, stop thinking about that could increase people’s well-being. But one of the reasons why people think so much about their appearance is because they are judged by others according to that. That is why such an experiment could not work in the long run because it is important that you look orderly at work for example.
ReplyDeleteThe same applies for the experiment with the time. Stopping clocks is an amazing idea. I guess it definitely reduces stress. You can take all the time you need for whatever you do and don’t have to hurry to finish your activities in time, because there is no time. But this experiment can also only be conducted if you don’t work and don’t have appointments. Time is an important part of live and if everybody stopped thinking about time the world would be a chaos. It would be impossible and exhausting to meet friends or have business meetings if everybody just arrives at different times. As a conclusion, these experiments are good ideas and probably worth trying but unfortunately they can never be adapted in everyday life in the long run.
I agree with you that it is such a great idea and that it is practically not feasible in every day’s life. I think such experiment should only be done academically by the right people so as to yield results that can be scientifically proven. I believe stopping the inflow of personal feedbacks might be more beneficial than harmful, so the existence of scientific proof will convince more people to do mirror fasting. Nevertheless, I do not think that people whose daily lives depend on tight scheduling of activities can truly benefit from mirror fasting, since they will easily miss appointments and meetings. Suppose that we work as an artist or writer, which are the kinds of jobs whose activities do not require any scheduling, then mirror fasting may probably be done without sacrificing the efficiency of our work. As a student, however, the notion that we may miss lectures or, probably even worse, exams, is too horrendous to bear and as such, I will not consider doing this anytime soon.
Delete"Sometimes it's best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors." The quote in the first paragraph grabs my attention.
ReplyDeleteWho can resist to have unlimited times? Who can resist to have a life the way they wanted?
I think nobody in this world can resist it.
However, in my opinion, that such of things seem to be unrealistic in real life. We are not alone living in this world. As a human being, we are dependent on other people; you can’t live alone. To avoid conflicts due to unlimited wants, rules are being made for people to respect each other.
In the other hand, time is money. For instance, losing just one minute can make the economic system will not work and resulting the lost of economic profit in any section in this world. I agree with what Lisa said, this experiment can never be adapted in everyday life for a long term.
Commenting on Gati’s post, I agree with what you feel about going through a day without having a wrist watch. I feel you. I am the type of person who relies on wristwatch. Sometimes, I feel like it suits my left hand perfectly that if I forgot to wear it, I feel like I just lost something. Even if I have a clock in my phone or my laptop, but I don’t know why I feel miserable without my wristwatch.
“Sometimes it’s best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors”. It’s a good idea to switch off your phone and avoiding the mirror for a while but to stop all the clocks? Not so much.
ReplyDeleteWe as a human being have a responsibility to be on time or punctual, so in order to do so, I don’t think it is even possible to stop all the clocks for a long period of time. Other than it being able to reduce stress and combating depression (by being able to do your activities whenever you want) this cannot be done if you have a job or appointment (be it a doctor’s appointment or even work etc).
The only activity I agree most to is to avoid mirrors. I remember those days when I paid so much attention on my appearance, so much time I wasted for nothing. The fact that one small action can make a big difference which is making us able to develop our goals, passion and hobbies is fascinating. I would try this one day if I become obsessive again.
The idea of the experiment is interesting. By covering any mirrors in your house and stopping any house appliance that has clock in it you cannot measure the time and how you looks, but this experiment can be done effectively in a short period of time , and like Lisa said that appearance is important when you’re going to do activities outside your house such as working . This also applied to the time experiment , you don’t have to worried about time you spend and feel like time is unlimited so you don’t have to worry about your deadline of particular task. But like Lisa said this experiment doesn’t applied when you have appointment with someone. since appointment is an event that occurs in certain period of time , having unlimited time is impossible if you have to go an appointment because by having unlimited time you can’t measure the time or what time you have to go. It is indeed that by not knowing time it can reduce someone stress level but like I said before it can be effective only in a short period of time
ReplyDeleteThis topic is interesting. I’ve once imagined what would happen if there was no mirror around us, or what would happen if people didn’t have any clock to know the time. Would they be more happier because they don’t feel pressured? People who can’t stand it would probably suffer emotionally. We are used to think about what the other people said to us. We’re being judged all of the time. This also leads us to measure everything based on their expectation. We will be more aware of our appearance and we will find it hard to love ourselves.
ReplyDeleteStop all the clocks is a unique way to train your mind. If you have no clock to tell you about the time, you have to develop your intuition to read the nature or the sun. Because you don’t need to get distracted with the time, you can be more focused on what you do and you will live to the fullest. Although this method is a little bit strange and kinda hard to do, I guess we should try it sometimes and feel the good impact.
Stopping the time for a moment is an extraordinary idea. Every day we always feel that we need more time for working or other activities that need more time. Time is the most important thing of our life. There will always limit time in anything we do. If the time stop for a moment, we won’t dependent on the time and won’t know what time is it. We just know the estimate time from the outside. But we can have time without limit and won’t worry to our work deadline. We can utilize our time as we want. However, the negative side is we couldn’t know what time is it. It is bad when we have an appointment and also when we want to come to the invitation. The advice that I can get from this article is how important the time is, because the time can manage us become more discipline, especially in managing time. If we couldn’t manage the time as well, then we will feel like we need more time to do our work.
ReplyDeleteI really like the feeling when you have gone a whole day without thinking of the time or looking at your cellphone. The best time is when you are somewhere far away and you know that it dosen't really matter if people can't reach you. The phone or the internett connection doesn't work anyway so you're not able to find out what your friends are doing, then you can feel completely free and relaxed. In Norway my family have a cottage on the mountain, it's really relaxing and without the possibility to use your phone or computer all the time. I love spending some time there.
ReplyDeleteWe bring our cellphone everywhere and we check our facebook and our mail all the time. If we forget our phone at home when we go out we feel completely naked. You feel helpless because we cant reach our friends and know whats going on. I don't think it's healthy, because we aren't able to relax without our cellphone.
It is really nice if you have some time with you that you didn’t bother to check what time is it. Trying to keep on time on schedule by viewing the watch can increase your stresses. So, there may be sometimes when you didn’t really need all of those clock, and just do it.
ReplyDeleteLike I said before, having a full day of free day really give out the entire burden you have. Doing anything you want without concerning the clock. Enjoying what happen around you. It doesn’t really bad, it is perfect to relax.
There is sometimes when you go out at some times, but limited to do so because you have something you must do at the other times. And in the end, you just check the watch all the times because you didn’t want to be late in the other times. Because of that time checking all the time, you ended up didn’t enjoy what you do in that times.
Maybe, stop the entire clock and covering mirrors could be a good idea to try. You don’t have to be worried and rushed of what time it is. You can freely do anything you want without thinking the time. And mirrors, you don’t have to see it every time you feel uncomfortable with yourself. By covering all mirrors, you can feel the inner beauty inside of you, and started to smile more to be beauty.
ReplyDeleteBut I think, doing this experiment is only allowed when you have nothing to do with others. Like the article mentioned, he/she only use the calendar to see an appointment instead of clock. Well, I think it’s unacceptable. You can’t measure the time through the sun. It’s not as accurate as the clock. Especially when you have to meet someone important. You have to measure an exact time and you have to look nice. First impression is still important nowadays. Someone might not like you because of his/her first impression of you.
So, I don’t say it’s a bad experiment, but you have to do this on you spare time or anytime that you think suitable.

That was very nice! I have to try it someday. I think this kind of activity can be one list that I have to do on holiday. To be honest, I’m a type of person who is very scheduled. I have to bring my clever phone every time and put my schedule in S Planner. I am a forgetful person, consequently I had to have a record of what I will do every day.
ReplyDeleteDuring the holidays, I want to enjoy my forgetful attitude. I do not have to do ordinary things. Moreover, I do not have to look at my clever phone every time as well. Maybe, by ignoring time of the world, I can enjoy the world better. I will not be bound by time, I can be free to do whatever and whenever. I also had to learn to manage my time well without a clear indicator. This will also help me practice not bound by my clever phone.
I couldn’t agree more with Farah and Gati. I am a type of person that always wears my watch. It is like something is missing if I don’t wear it. But, although I don’t wear my watch, I always bring my phone wherever I, so I can take a look at the time whenever I want.
ReplyDeleteFrankly speaking, I am a very scheduled person as well. There is my one month schedule in my note book about what I have to do in a month. I also make the time of it especially for a week from now. But I am not a strict kind of person which the schedule cannot be changed.
I don’t know how my life will be if there is no clock which makes me knows the time. But it is an interesting idea to try although it would be a quite hard. I agree with Adit too, that we can enjoy this beautiful world without having to worry about the time.
I was laughing when the first time I read that article. I was imagines in my mind what I must supposed to do that all clocks and mirror are covered. So it just like there is no mirror and clock in life. By not knowing about your appearances and your life maybe it can increase about your awareness about your life and appearances. Actually, my favorite song now is seems like similar in this article. That was a song from kings of convenience called ‘power of now knowing’ I can conclude from the title of that song that sometimes we better that we don’t know about something that disturb you. But actually that song is required to something that connected with love. But we can applicant it with all things in this world. But if there is a rule in this country that says forget anything about clock, reminder, mirror, etc. maybe my nationality will be asked.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of stoping the clock is actually great. Why is it great? Because I think that by stoping time we can have a moment to relax. We also don't have to worry about things such working for deadlines. We have no limits if the clocked stopped. Not only that, but we can get lots more benefits if the clock stops. One of them are that we can enjoy spending free time without looking at the clock because theres no limitation. Basically, thats just the good thing about the clock stopping. Now, let me tell you about the bad things.
ReplyDeleteI think the negative thing when the clock stops is we can't really manage our time. Its because our life relies on time, and without it we can't do our daily activities like having an appointment, working, palying etc. So, you can say that by stoping time we make us much happy but I think only for a while and I think it can also make us lazy.
“Sometimes it’s best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors”
ReplyDeleteWell, about to stop the clocks. I think, I can not live without knowing the time. I always use my watch everytime, except while I was sleeping. Personally, I try to be punctual in my life, so without knowing the time, I can not manage my time properly.
The next one is to switch off the phone. Well, I tried it when I was having a long holiday. I did not touch my phone in 2 days. And I was okay with it. Actually, it is not very difficult for me to switch off my gadget, because I am not a gadget-freak. But, I do need my gadget whenever I want to contact someone in emergency. So, I need the phone but I am not addicted of it.
The last one is mirror. I think I can not live without mirror. Because as a girl, I have to make my self well-groom. But, maybe someday I will try to avoid the mirror usage, just in one day.
First sentence that caught my mind is “this column will change your life”. Then I read again that sometimes it's best to stop all the clocks, switch off phones and studiously avoid all mirrors. Well, I really want to try this. I think this is a great idea while people are too busy with their gadgets. Honestly, I feel that I can’t live without my wristwatch, mirrors and also my phone. When I wake up, I always try to find my phone to see clock, date and also my schedule. I even wake up with my phone’s alarm. I always look at my mirror before go out. Stop clocks, turn off phones, and avoid mirror maybe will be great. But, I can’t imagine if we don’t know time. We can miss our entire schedule. I also can’t turn my phone off; because people, especially my parents there can’t contact me. Avoid mirrors can be easy for me. But, stop all clocks and turn off my phone will not be easy. But, maybe I will try it someday.
ReplyDeleteActually in this era, we have to realized that we are dependable to the gadget. It is better to do not bring a wallet rather than cellphone. But I think i can do it. I have tried it before when I was in high school, before and during the national exam. My dad give challengen to me whether I can turn off my blackberry for a month. And finally I accomplished that. Well, it is hard in the first, it is weird that I am not checked my phone a whole day. But the next day, I feel like usual. And the result is worth it, i can focused on my studying without worried about the notifications on my phone.
ReplyDeleteAvoid the mirror, it is pretty difficult to try it. As a girl, I proved that I can live without mirror. Even I just woke up in the morning, sometimes I directly to see myself at the mirror with the worst looks. I can not count how many times I look at myself on mirror a day.
To stop all the clock, I think it is possible to do but during the holiday. You know that time is very important to make you on time, arrange the schedule, and so on. But if the clock stops, your schedule is totally messed up.
The article above is pretty much amazing because it’s truly inspiring and has a similarity within people’s life.
ReplyDelete“Sometimes it's best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors.” Kind of these methods can be a great solution for someone who already feeling tired of life’s routine and pressure. Honestly, whenever I try to begin my self evaluation I also don’t care anymore about how fast the time goes, switch off my cellphone, and absolutely avoid mirrors (because basically I’m not kind of girl that always need a mirror, just use it as I needed.) It’s fully understand why everybody needs sometime for alone, finding peace in a frantic world, and enjoying the life’s values. Perhaps the idea of studiously avoid all mirrors is perfectly suited with everyone who are obsessed with self esteem. Although we know what’s the reason behind that, the most important is just accepting your looks however they may be, people can reach their meaningful life when they don't have to look in a mirror being overaware about their appearance. By doing that, we can learn how being accepted all things God’s has given to us, it leads us more grateful.
It is true that by not knowing the time, it will somehow make us calmer and more serene. Because, based on what I read in the book “In The Now”, the only time that you are happy is when you are being in the present. When you don't think about the past and the future, just live your life only in that very moment, that's actually the only time that you ARE happy. That's why it is called “The Present”. Just like when kids are playing, they really enjoy their time and didn't even have time to think about anything else except the games that they're playing. Adults need to do more of this, less worrying and less expecting. The practice of not looking at the clock at all is a bit extreme, although it will be fun to try someday. But I think its is important to know why it made people more serene or why it reduced a person's stress level. And the only reason is because when we don't know about the time, we are forced to live in the now. And as I said earlier, living in the now is the only way to feel happy!
ReplyDeleteI honestly still do not grasp the idea of this blog post, but I am kind of interested about the method that were told. People nowadays are being dependent, or maybe way too dependent with their gadget. Almost everyone, including myself, wrote their to-do list on their gadget so they wouldn't forget what would they wanted or needed to do in the present day. I once read an article who a persons loses his phone and he feels completely free. He didn't have to check his phone every second to collect info on what's going on with his friends or to update his status or to reply his friends messages. He feels he's not entangled by his own phone. I have experienced it too, but not because I lost my phone but my phone battery is dead. I feel so relieved that I do not have to reply to anyone's message and they couldn't bother me with their own problem. The method of stopping all the clocks, switching off all phones and avoiding all mirrors is kinda unique. I wonder how the world will be when everyone is doing it.
ReplyDeleteI like to wear wrist watch. Sometime, I also forget to wear it and of course feel a little bit strange. I also like to bring my phone wherever I go. It sometimes annoys me when I forget to bring my phone. Phone is maybe my second boyfriend. It is like almost half of your life is in your phone.
ReplyDeleteBut whatever, I agree with the idea. Live without watch, that means live with no pressure of deadlines. In my opinion also, your phone can be your trouble. I sometimes feel more stressed-out with my phone near me. Sometimes I want to say “leave me alone, phone! I’m tired of you!” I tried not to touch my phone for one day and switch off my phone. It actually works. I feel more relax and life seems enjoyable.
So now, whenever I feel stressed-out, I will switch off my phone and not even think about my phone for the day.
Living in a period of time without clocks and mirrors are strangely interesting. I personally can’t even try to think to live in that kind of life. Frankly, I’m the kind of person that is the same with a lot of the commenters above. I absolutely can’t go through a day without wearing a watch. We could try not checking our weight every now and then and regreting immediately about the last food we ate. This could help a lot of people who has a weight-conscious problem. They are constantly aware of their weight and comparing it with others. Probably without checking their weight, they could eventually accept their body the way it is. Another option that could be turned into a great experiment is if we lay off technology for a few days. Imagine all the sorts of people who’d go crazy without their mobile phones, laptop, TV, and Internet connection. I doubt there are not many people who will turn to books or meditating for their own good.
ReplyDeleteIn reality, we cannot separate ourselves from time and appearance. Why do I say that? Because in our daily life, we meet other person, we have some appointment and schedule that we should attend, and it all needs time management and appearance. If we look bad, or we attend to an appointment lately, who's going to respect you anyway? I am an on-time girl; if I had a schedule, then I have to go there on time. But, in some ways, forgetting the time and appearance like when I had a vacation in Pindul cave with my friends makes me feel happier. I enjoy more freedom, I become closer with my friends and the nature like I don't have any problems, and I feel like there's no people who cares about my appearance because we personally don’t care about each of our appearance. Stop all the clocks, switch off all phones, and avoid all mirrors if you want to feel a bit freedom. It will help you relieve your stress. But never forget the reality because you can do it only when you really don't have any assignment or appointment to do. Nice article, Sir.
ReplyDeleteIt's challenging!. Maybe I should try it for 3 days or more. It's unusual way of living. Without simple things that could make us survive from schedule and appearance. Many people are imaginating it. Clock stop, No wacth, etc. But what we can do ? We always sum up to continue our life and ignore it. We couldn’t make clock stop but we stop our activities, sit down and make up our mind. When we are trying this. I’m sure that lots of people would complain. Not only that. The worst is suicide I guess. Another case is learn to "read the sun" and"nocturnal time-monitoring behaviour". What if the sun is covered by clouds ?. Covered for couple an hour ?. Should we take back our watch and other things ?. Good for nocturnal ?. Guess that I’ll prove the theory and if I failed. It’s okay, just for fun.
ReplyDeleteThis article is really interesting and nice to be tried someday. The article says that “Sometimes it’s best to stop all the cocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors.” To be honest, the 3 things sentenced above are really important, especially time. As a college student, we usually have many activities that time management is really important, and sometimes in a day, I have many appointment or meeting that I have to attend. I think it is hard to do this experiment during doing our campus activities, because we have to separate our time toward our activities.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, when the hoIiday comes, I really want to try this kind of experiment. By stopping clocks, you don’t have to worry about time you spend and it is like you have unlimited time. You can do anything you want without bounded by the time. And it will be decrease your stress from your daily activities.
To start this off actually I cannot make an opinion on this article as I don’t really like to wear any watches and so I’m not really conscious about time and so this comment will be based purely on my prediction rather than from the experiences. Well I think if I’m that “watch guy” I think I would be more stressed about how little time I had in a day and I’ll be more time conscious. And in my prediction to be more time conscious is very tiring you will be like haunted by the fear of losing time and what keeps bothering your mind is deadlines, appointment etc, for me it really is terrifying to know that time is against us. And from what I’ve seen many people that are time conscious are more likely to suffer from depression compared to the one that is not time conscious and for this article to show how good is life without time is a very good tips for the “time keepers.”
ReplyDeleteIn the article it said that “Sometimes it's best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors.”. I a little bit disagree with that statement. I always look to the clock or my wrist watch. I always wear my wrist watch and I feel strange when I don’t or forget to wear my wrist watch. And I usually manage my time because I have many activities and assignment to do, so I really need to look at my wrist watch. And I don’t think I can live without mirrors haha, I can’t avoid looking in the mirror for one day. Because I don’t like being or looking mess when I want to go outside and meet people. It doesn't mean I don’t want to look ugly without my makeup on (actually I don’t really like wearing makeup), but at least I want to look nice or neat in front of people. And I like to look my beautiful face in the mirror haha.
ReplyDeleteBut perhaps someday I could try it. Stop the clock and covering mirrors could be a good idea to try, maybe I could do it during the holiday and when I just stay at home. You don’t have to be worry and rush of what time it is. I can freely do anything you want without thinking the time. And I can don’t really think about my appearance.
“Sometimes it's best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors,” Said this article.
ReplyDeleteYou know, in reality we have so many things to do and meeting with people, and without those things like clocks, phone, and mirrors. I do not think it would work just fine. What I am trying to say is, in our daily life we have schedules like appointment schedules, works schedules, classes that we need to attend, and personal or family time. And living without those three things, I think it is just crazy. because it might just ruin our daily routines. For example is, without clocks. All of our schedule could be like disorganized, and worst is we might do not get some things done in the right time. Without phone, it is quite the same. We cannot call or text anybody, we do not be able to contact anybody especially in the time of sudden. The last one is mirror. I think mirror is one of the most important things, especially when you are going to meet people, clients, or boss. Because you need to get their first impression, your look appearance may take a credit for your future deals, or anything.
This sentence really got my interest “Sometimes it’s best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors”. I do really want to try this, switch of my phone or trying not to use my wrist watch. I don’t know why but I feel incomplete without wearing my wrist watch or not trying to check my phone. Although, I have ever tried to living without my phone when I’m going to face the national exam and the result is really amazing, my life was so much more peaceful rather than when I’m using my phone all the time and it makes me more focus with what I’ve struggling for my life. However, I can’t really live without my phone since I do need to contact with my friends. In conclusion, I do really want to have a private time with my own self and try to not to think about what other peoples saying about me or anything. I just want to live my life without any worries and problems, even though it seems a little bit selfish. By not caring about what other people’s thoughts it means that we don’t care about them. Well, something being a little bit selfish is good but still we have to control our ego.
ReplyDeleteStopping the clock and cover all mirror would be a perfect way to escape from the real life that make you stressed out. Moreover, it helps you to increase your personality and attitude. If you aren’t looking for the clock, you could focus more and what you are doing. And, I think that covering the mirror is a perfect way for us to not judging something from what it’s appeared in front of our eyes. It makes us more concern about what is people from inside, not from what they wear or how they look. And also turn off our cell phone can maintain our attitude, these days, we become more and more addicted for smart phones, some of us would be okay if we left our wallet at home but panicking when we left our phone! Even people that sit side by side are communicating to each other using their cell phone. How ridiculous that is. By turning off our cell phone, we can relax a bit and pay more attention to what everything around us. But it’s become harder to do these things because all of it has become our habit.
ReplyDelete“This column will change your life” I thought it’s a bit exaggerated. But after I read this article until the very end, I agree with that statement. “Sometimes it's best to stop all the clocks, switch off your phone and studiously avoid all mirrors.” It’s good for us to just stop looking at our social networks in our smartphone, and having an actual conversation with your closest friends and family members, especially in the weekend. It helps you to relax a little bit. And the brightness in smartphones’ LCD screen sometimes can give a headache. Typing those long sentences of words tires your fingers too. “All the other interests in my life – my goals, passions, friends, family, favorite hobbies, etc. – have attracted the energy and attention I used to give to my looks,” All women would agree with this statement. We take a lot of time just to look at the mirror and being insecure about our face or body. Half of us also love putting and fixing our make up. I think it’s a great idea to not looking at the mirror at the weekend. But I don’t agree with this statement “Unsubscribed from the clock: I dropped my watch right into the garbage.” Students have deadlines and businessmen have meetings to attend. Considering my watch’s price, I think I personally won’t drop my watch into the garbage haha. Thank you for reading.
ReplyDeleteWhen I (only) read the title of this blog, crossed in my mind, If the time were stopped for a while to complete the jobs we were haven’t done and could run again as usual after finishing the tasks. Yes, who does not want to pause time to do all the chaos that we have not been completed? Unfortunately, God is not seeking to stop the time (yet). Again, about time management. Whatever it's an organizer or whatsoever invented sophistically, depends on the level of discipline over oneself. Sometimes we are looking at the clock or wristwatch in a narrow time is really wrong , there are very deep sense of regret why I did not do this earlier , why I can’t organize my time and schedule , and so on . If we are able to be tough and being discipline on the schedule, there will be no “stop all the clocks , please" in your mind . Finally, we all still need watches, clocks, mobile phones, organizers, and all forms of reminders. By we are able to discipline ourselves, all kinds of reminders will increase the efficiency of the performance of your routine.
ReplyDeleteFor me doing something like this is impossible, I used to make a plan with divide the time, so I guess if I turn off all the clock I would be a very confused person, I have a pretty busy schedule every day, but the idea off stop all the clock is quite interesting, we can be more relaxed without glued with time, I was the type of person who really use all of the time I have, it is very difficult for me to get spare time, I think the idea to turn off all the clocks is a good idea as long as the person is still able to divide and use the time well, for me the clock is maid for humans to remember and plan their activities each day, if we can divide and allocate time properly without the help of clock then not using a clock is not a serious problem, but for me, I can not divide time without the help of clock.

ReplyDeleteI think it is worth to try. Measuring everything in your life makes you feel unhappy. It’s like something pushing you, giving burdens in your live. You’ll feel in hurry, frustrated in deadline, like everything abusing your own life. These thing makes you so depressed in life. This idea is keeping ourselves from scaling your life and try to enjoy everything you have.
But in real life, this is a risk. I think you must ready with the feedback of this idea, because you will suffer from depression if you afraid with it. You will more depressed, because people will get angry to you because you forget a schedule, for example. The point is that you need to stop measuring everything. Let your body make its own measure, not bounded with scale. Reduce your ego and concerns. Enjoy everything and do not let anything suppressed you.
