Generating Ideas with a Brainstorm

Here is an example of how a thorough brainstorming exercise can create ideas or perspectives which you might be able to use to make your writing interesting. The basic principle of the brainstorm was to NOT edit yourself; just let the ideas flow out, even if they seem a bit silly or repetitive. Write everything down. Quantity not quality [the quality comes later!] Apologies in advance for any repetitions you find. Take a look...

In the case of the 'First Semester IUP Students' question, ideas for advice that came up on almost every brainstorm sheet were... Be organized - Be an active student - Balance work and play - Be open minded - Keep healthy - Be honest - Be polite - Join Organisations - Make new friends. Good advice, undoubtedly, but a bit predictable and dull!

Fortunately, thanks to the brainstorms we did last week we came up with some attention grabbing bits of advice that we can use for our article to make it interesting and thought provoking. Take a look. We can start each of the nine or ten paragraphs with a funny or idiosyncratic 'point' but then explain the kind of advice that it refers to.

So, based on the many ideas generated by the brainstorm, here is a rough plan for the piece of writing, with notes on what will be covered in each paragraph.

What practical and personal advice
would you give to students starting
their first semester with IUP?

Remember where you parked your motorbike.
Be organised. Take responsibility. Know where you are supposed to be. Know when you must complete tasks. Be professional. Don't walk around in a daze!

Stop looking at the clock.
Don't be passive and lazy. Get involved in classes. Be active. Ask and answer questions. Grab opportunities. Don't see your lectures as things you simply have to endure.

Find a good coffee place.
Balance your work with times of relaxation and recreation. Know how to relieve your stress. Find places to hang out with friends. Give yourself breaks. Enjoy being busy, but also enjoy doing little or nothing sometimes!

Do not be afraid to be wrong.
Be open minded. Explore your own opinions. Test them. Listen to others. Admit you have doubts. Admit you have changed your mind. Do your best but don't be a perfectionist if it stresses you out or makes you unable to work.

Don’t drink the tap water.
Don't do things that are unhealthy for you. Get enough sleep. Eat properly and regularly. Don't drive yourself too hard. Don't think that you can survive for 4 months on instant noodles. Exchange students should also beware of hidden threats to your health in this new environment... like the tap water!

Try random things with new friends.
This is a time to try new things, be adventurous, broaden your horizons, spread your wings etc. Remember that some of the people you get to know are going to be lifelong friends; others won't be. Find out who you are, who you like, and what you like to do.

Don't sign the attendance register for other people.
Be honest. Take responsibility for yourself. Be loyal to friends and help them when you can, but don't be compromised. Don't get into situations where you are doing things you feel uncomfortable with or that you know are not right.

Explore other faculties' canteens.
You are not just IUP. You are not just FEB. You are a member of UGM. Join organisations and clubs. Play sports. Take up new sports or hobbies. Make friends in other faculties. Broaden your horizons.

Don’t fall in love too easily.
Look after yourself emotionally. Be prepared to take a few knocks. Be prepared to take a few risks or to try new things. But don't jump in with both first when you are unsure. Learn who to trust a lot and who to trust less. Take everything at your own speed. If life knocks you down, get up again.

Sound advice? Yes. Variety of issues? Yes. Authentic and practical? Yes. Conventional and serious approach? Not really. Interesting, idiosyncratic advice that attracts the attention of the reader? I reckon so. Mission accomplished!

  1. "Listen to Adrian"... Whoever write this must be very considerate with you, Sir. Perhaps he/she has crushes with you? As a fan, that is, not as... You-know-what. Don't subtract my point, I was merely joking. Please...

I had to do forensic handwriting analysis to try to work out who thought of this excellent piece of advice.

  3. I remember when I did this brainstorming last Thursday. With my other 3 friends, we are creating the ideas and then write it down on the paper. This brainstorming made me realise that we can get some unexpected ideas popped up in our mind. Such as 'don't fall in love with the lecturer', I never thought of that.. Seriously, who knows that someone would wrote that? In some case, that thing might happen though. Can you imagine, if one of your student get in love with you? haha. Most the ideas are also good, like the 'Find ways to relieve your stress', ' Manage your money', and 'Don't procrastinate' are three common problem of the freshmen, which we should settle. To realieve a stressed mind, in every weekeend probably we can go to the beach or the mountain (since Jogja has both of them) and take a deep breath of the fresh air. The hardest part is managing money and procrastinate things. But, I believe that we could solve that problem by the time.

My wife has issued strict instructions forbidding me from imagining it.

    2. Hey Farah, we were in a group together right? I agree with you that a lot of new and unpredictable things suddenly popped up in our mind. I love it when we got crazy ideas and imagined it together hahaha
And, why didn’t we think about “Don't think that you can survive for 4 months on instant noodles”? I found that this idea is pretty amazing and useful. It’s like a warning for us to make a limitation on how much instant noodle that we eat. And, “don't fall in love with the lecturer”, I think we have thought about it right? I don’t even know how it could possibly get through our mind. But, after a while, I think that this advice is quite useful for us. We should keep our heart and our eyes open widely to see which one is good enough to be dated. And lecturers are the least person to date with. Or never haha

  4. I found these advices are quite useful for freshmen like us to get through a college life. I really like the "Stop looking at the clock" advice. Seriously, imagine the self control needed.. it takes all my power not to look at that thing. I can't even pass through 30 minutes without looking at the clock and telling myself not to repeat it. I’m glad other students feel that too, I thought it was just me. But of course not during Adrian's class because Adrian's class is always fun, right? Yes, right. Anyway, focusing on the class makes us less sleepy which is good. Stop mind wandering. Another advice I found interesting is “get as much sleep as you can.” This is so true. Some people say sleep is just for the weak ones, okay I admit that I am one of those weak people. Most people need 6-7 hours of sleep a day but a hectic college life makes it seem impossible. So when I have a leisure time I choose to sleep instead of hanging out with friends or family (but I still spend some quality time with them on weekends, of course) , there’s always something to sacrifice in order to pursue another thing. We can’t win them all but it all depends on how we manage our time.

      "Another advice I found interesting..."

"Advice" is an uncountable noun so we cannot say "an advice" or "another advice" or "three advices". So... "I found this advice quite useful for freshmen like us." And... "Another piece of advice I found interesting...".

  5. When we did brainstroming activities last Thursday, I honestly like the activity. It was quite fun and useful, at least for me. I feel like collage life and high-school life seems different. I found some advices are useful for me. For example, 'Stop Looking at The Clock' , That advice is right. When you are looking at the clock often, that will makes you boring. You will feel like why this class takes forever. But when you are not even thinking about how long the class will be and be more active in class , you will find it that the class is actually fun. In my first day of collage, I liked to look at the clock and I was thinking ‘when does the class end?’. But now , I am trying to be more active in class. It’s useful because instead of you won’t feel boring, you will also get some knowledge and will more understand about the subjects.
I also like the advice ‘Do not be afraid to be wrong’ . There aren’t any people that will always be perfect. Every people will surely make some mistakes. So, Never be afraid to be wrong because from your mistake will lead you into success life. For example, try to answer your lecturer’s questions. Ask your lecturer when you still don’t understand about the subjects. Be confident but don’t be overly confident. When you already tried your best, don’t be afraid to be wrong.

  6. Brainstorming that we did in the last meeting was so fun! I am actually did not really have many ideas. I am just wrote about nine advices. But when we changed to other group, I just realized that many advices that I can give. I laughed a lot when read the other's advice. For example 'stop looking at the clock'. Indeed, I am always doing this activity at the class, especially to boring subject. Then after that I checked my phone, then yawn a lot. 2,5 hours actually is too long, moreover if we do not like the lecturer or the subject. Some of my friend decided to sleep at the class, but I will never do that. Because attitude is important. If I sleep at the class, it means that I am not appreciate my lecturer. In my opinion, college life is different. We need to understand the lecturer habit. We are not children anymore right?
Try random thing with new friend is a good advice. By doing this, we can explore Jogja more detail. We also can get more friends. We should make a friend not only in FEB but also in e other faculty. Because this is important when we graduated from UGM, then we have link to get a job or doing the business. Also, make a friend with senior. They must help us a lot, give an advice to facing the lecturer and so on.

  7. In my opinion, brainstorming itself really helps you to find ideas that you didn't think of in the second you need it. what we did in class last time, I thought was really interesting, because not only did we figure about or own ideas, but we can then find out other advice from our friends. I found myself having the idea of writing "do not procrastinate, especially when you have to finish 4 blog comments in a week" or something like that I couldn't remember the full sentence. Why did I say that? It is because I am doing it myself and experiencing that it is not pleasing so far, so yes do not procrastinate! moreover, I also find the some of the advices funny in a way. You would find somebody saying "get to know girls". Now if I actually said that it would make me seem like a want to be friends with only girls and have all those girl parties or girl talks or whatever. Overall, everybody did a great job inspiring with advices.

  8. To be honest, all the suggestions I wrote on the last meeting we had were things that I should have done on earlier weeks as a college student. For example, I wrote “Don't be late on your first class” because actually I was late on my very first class in my college life. It was Mr. Akhmad Makhfatih's mathematic class. The class began on 7 straight in the morning, but I woke up at half past six. So I barely prepared myself that morning which results forgetting to bring my bag to the class. I consider it as my worst first-day-on-college experience. The class began at 7 and I rushed in to the class at 15 past 7. And other example, such as “Eat healthy foods. Don't eat too much instant noodles”. I wrote that because I had stomachache after I eat instant noodle for almost three times a week. I tried to save my money and decided to eat instant noodles instead of non-instant foods, but it didn't go that well. I had stomachache and had to absent on 2 classes because I couldn't help myself wake up from the bed.

  9. I find the brainstorming activity last Friday very effective. Not only does it help us with our writing skills or brainstorming but also gives useful advice. The advice that I agree most to is “stop looking at the clock” and “Do not be afraid to be wrong”. It’s not that I’m lazy its just a habit of mine. Gladly I don’t look at the clock that often in Mr.Adrians class because I feel like I’m not even studying but rather ‘playing’ (which is a good thing). “Do not be afraid to be wrong” for me is just easy to say but hard to do because who wants to be caught being wrong? But then again, we’re not in high school anymore.
Advices that I think is funny but somewhat true
-You can sleep in class - nobody cares
-Stop Facebook and use Twitter instead
    -Don't yawn in class
-Don't expect too much from your teachers

  10. Wow, the previous class was so interesting. Too bad I couldn’t come into class due to health problem. Reading briefly from passage, I also have the same points with what written there. We have to manage our time very well in order to maintain our “College Life” contains of studying and playing. There is a proverb said “Work hard, Play hard” and it reflects in our daily life as college students. We want to join some organizations – Maybe all organizations provided in UGM – to get more friends and expand our networking with students come from another faculty, since networking skill is very necessary in work environment. Besides, we have to keep our focus and our aim to college – studying and getting satisfied GPA since this is our first year in college—that’s it. I still find difficult to manage time wisely. Sometimes I was too excited playing with my friends from another faculty and hang out until night and forgot all my tasks (Well, this isn’t a frank condition) to be done. Therefore, time management is quite compulsory to keep balanced between playing and studying, so we can implement the proverb mentioned before, and 1 more,
“Don’t fall in love too easily.
Look after yourself emotionally. Be prepared to take a few knocks. Be prepared to take a few risks or to try new things. But don't jump in with both first when you are unsure. Learn who to trust a lot and who to trust less. Take everything at your own speed. If life knocks you down, get up again.”

Looks funny, but it’s true. Love story always spice up our daily life, and as a consequence, we have to pay attention to it.

  11. I’m so delighted about joining the previous class, because I can write anything which comes from my mind. With my three other friends, I make some Ideas about what should collegers do during the class. It’s really funny to read one of the advice which is said “Stop looking at the clock”. Sometimes I do it too and maybe it’s time for me to decrease it. Other Activities that’s funny is “Stop Yawning” but that’s true, I often do it too. It’s not because I don’t respect my lecturer, but it’s because I’m sleepy or maybe tired to do all of the stuff. Besides all the “funny truth” one advice that keep my spirit on is “Studying and getting high GPA”. It such as a must for anyone to do it. Another interesting advice is “don’t procrastinate with your assignment”. This is the hardest part of my college life, but I believe I can overcome it.

  12. Stop looking at the clock. But unfortunately I can't stop it because since junior high school I always asked my friends when the class will end. And sometimes I reminded my teachers if the class was already end. It's kind of rude actually but I can't help it. I'm an on-time girl. In my mind, we should start and end something on time. But in the other hand, I am a procrastinator. I like to push the snooze button when the alarm is ringing and then I continue my sleep. I like to use "sistem kebut semalam (SKS)", or in English we can say "one-night-learning system" to do assignments or study. But I don't suggest you to use this system because I found it's not working once. I did my SIMFONI tasks and I wanted to print it at home. At first my printer was working, but the next second task couldn't be printed because my printer was suddenly stuck. Next day, I used that printer again and it was working. To be noted, SKS is not recommended to be applied on your college life and don't be too panic on something.

  13. I find the idea of getting ideas from brainstorming a wonderful idea, among other methods available to get ideas, the idea of brainstorming got that certain appeal to me. Some people like to list their idea, some like to create a mind map of their idea, but really, brainstorming is just my cup of tea. The previous class brainstorming session was really fun and interesting as well, I enjoyed the feeling of brainstorming with my friends, laughing and joking around, but still, we got the ideas we need. I don’t really like listing things, because sometimes it looked too boring and too formal compared to brainstorming, where you can just scribble things on randomly, and then discard the ideas we don’t really need and like, it’s much more fun that way. When you brainstorm, the result may look a lot like what you will get when you do a mind map, but more cluttered, lots of people say that doing a mind map is the most effective way to get ideas, and to study, but I don’t know why, I hate making mind maps, all this while I’ve always prefer brainstorming or listing things rather than doing a mind map.

  14. First of, I want to say thank you, to Mr. Adrian for giving me thoe advice. Those advice are useful, especially for a lazy freshman like me. But I think the hardest part of all is “Stop looking at the clock” especially during class. I really cant stop myself from looking at the clock and hoping that time would go faster. And laziness itself is hard to conquer. And the other interesting part of all, is Listen to Adrian. It is nice to listen to your lecture, Sir. And be an active student is also important. Because nowadays, GPA score isn’t all that matters. You also need organizational skills, a skill to organize people, and the ability to lead. And those abilities, can’t be earned by learning in class alone, you need to join and participate in an organization. In UGM alone, there are a lot of organizations to join. And I guess that is all.

  15. The brainstorming that we did last Monday was really interesting and fun. It’s really helpful and I can also share some of the advices with my other friends. I agree with the, “Stop Looking at The Clock” advice. Why? Because I did that often enough. Because sometimes I really can’t help myself wondering on how long the class will finish, is it half an hour more or 30 minutes left for the class to end? and this thing is actually making me bored. Maybe for the next time I will do that advice and stop looking at the clock, by trying to be more active in the class than before and of course by trying to learn and understand the subjects that is explained by the lecturer. Beside that, I also like with the “Don’t fall in love too easily. “ advice. By entering the university life of course we met a lot of “new friends” in the campus. Some might have a crush at the first sight then try to get close to each other then, BAM! Later on, i found out they already dating. It’s not like that I dislike with the idea of having a crush with other students or something it’s just that when we’re falling in love we often to left out everything behind us and we can’t focus on our goals like achieving a good grades or GPA.

  16. First, I would like to say thanks to you, Mr. Adrian. You’ve introduced brainstorming to me in such a fun way. At first, I don’t really like doing brainstorming. I thought it’s not really useful. I think “manage your sleeping habits” advice is really important. Because, at early weeks of my college life started, it was hard for me to manage my sleep, and I got sick too often. “Go sightseeing in Yogya” is really great advice. We must enjoy our life anywhere we are. I always do it when I have time and no class. My advice is just exploring Jogja, don’t use any map, get lost and find way by your own. The great thing is I never get lost too far. I agree with “be open about cultural differences” advice. Our friends are coming from different provinces even different countries. They are bringing their own culture that’s different from our culture, and we have to understand each other. And the most important advice that I read above is smile. Yes, we have to smile to our friends, people in the faculty but not smile when you’re alone.

  17. This advice is useful for us, the students who just started our first semester with IUP. To be honest, I always look at the clock during the lecture, I don't know why, I just started doing this during high school, but in your class, I don't look at the clock. Thank you so much for making this class enjoyable, Sir.

Personally, I don't really look for a good coffee place. I prefer to buy a bottle of coffee and drink it in campus before the class starts, especially in the afternoon class. It really helps me to keep my eyes opened. Sometimes I go to the coffee place, but I usually spent so much money there. As a student who live far away from parents, I have to save my money.

Anyway, I agree with the advice said: "Try to make a lot of friends," because the lecturers would like to give assignments for groups. It'll be hard if we don't have any friends.

  18. I remember when I and my friends created a group to make a brainstorm and it was so fun, thinking as many ideas as i could. We shared the advices from each other and we learned from the advices. I agree '' look for a good coffee place'' , well coffee place is my most important place to relieve my restless. And I do agree with ''manage your bedtime'' advice, managing our bedtime is useful because we know, we will be busy regard in our college life. we also have to control our healthy habit. And I thank to mr.Adrian and all of friends who have had give their ideas. its very useful to us, and also useful for new students

  19. A few days ago Adrian asked us to make the brainstorm. I don't even know what the brainstorm is before Adrian told me what the brainstorm is. I knew it as mind mapping. It was really fun for me and my friends to make the brainstorm because we can give the advices from our opinion that shared to another friends. And there were some jokes inside the brainstorm like "don't bring your father into the class" I think the concept of brainstorm is mindmapping which is very useful in academic world. Mind mapping helps us really much in helping us to easil remember what the concept of the lesson is. I agree if lecturers ask us to make the mindmapping for our academic world because I tink it is very helpul.

  20. Brainstorming, in my opinion, has so many benefits. In this case, when we did brainstorming about “Advice for Your First Semester in IUP”, we were required to write what our brain thought about the advice. I think, this activity can increase our brain’s performance and practice to be critical in thinking. So, this kind of activity is really beneficial for us.
There is something unique (but true and helpful) in some advice in this post. When others take the advice from the headlined ones, I will take the smaller and the not headlined ones. For example, I take “Get as much sleep as you can.”. This advice is kinda unique, but really true. Sleeping is necessary for all human beings. When you don’t have enough sleep, it will bother you all day long. You will yawn all day, not focus, and yes... sleep in the class. It will disturb your campus life and also of course your outside campus life.
Another unique advice is the “Bring your mineral water.”. It is really really helpful in these days, when the sun is just straight above Jogjakarta province and reach 37 degrees celcius in the afternoon. We can’t focus in the class when we are thirsty, right?
When I read this post, I found out that almost all of this advice is true and helpful. It shows that all of the IUP students in FEB UGM are able to think critically. And at last, I have to say thank you to Mr. Adrian for teaching us about the brainstorming activity.

  21. Last Friday I read some article and it’s mentioned about brainstorming, the article said Brainstorming is a key part to the creative process and it’s the best way to think of a whole pile of potential answers to a problem. So brainstorming is very useful for us, because today most of college students find it very difficult to come up with a variety of ideas in response to a problem.
I use brainstorming for IUP entrance test and its help me a lot, I could generate many ideas, even some of the ideas are ridiculous and does not have any relation to the main point but at the end of the test, my papers are full with my ideas.
And when we did the brainstorming about advice would you give to students starting their first semester with IUP. I write all of my ideas, for example: do not steal the library book, do not use the same clothes in a row, do not afraid to be wrong and be different.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Generating ideas with a brainstorm in the previous class was pretty attractive. It was just funny to figure out that most of us are actually have similar advices. I know it’s dull but that means we are actually experienced the same things. We build up almost the same perspective in our mind toward being an ideal IUP student who are just taking the first semester. Plenty of us agree that although it is a needed to be active in organizations, our formal classes come first. However, my group wrote many silly points since Mr.Adrian said the quantity is more important. We ran out of ideas anymore so we started to wrote what just popped out in our head such as make sure to smile to good looking seniors, everyday before the class starts make sure to go to call your parents how they are doing, bring jacket in case your classroom is cold, and many others.

  23. Last week we discussed about brainstorm in class and I know what it means later. Brainstorm helps us to collect all the ideas that cross in our mind and then we can use it to make anything. We made many list of something to do in our daily life at university and some problem in our university life. Some of them are unusual and made us laugh to it. Some advice like don’t afraid to be wrong is one of my problems that caused me to not active or participate in class, and that problem still haunts me until now. And then "Try random thing with friends" I usually do unusual things like truth or dare thing but we usually dare someone to embarrassed himself. Since then, i try to use the brainstorm technique to write a better-thought paragraph for my EWS comments. I see the differences it makes, because I think I'm learning to be more structured in my ideas.

  24. I think the usage of brainstorming is to generate ideas from one basic topic, and to think ‘out of the box’. When we’re on the class and try to have fun with the brainstorming game, I found many ideas that I didn’t think of. I don’t know if it was a joke or not, but it’s still in the topic. I also gave an idea of “make sure you go to the toilet at home before morning class (7 o’clock)” that maybe sounded a little bit weird. But it was from my own experience.

I was having a class at 7am, and I forget to go to the toilet before go to campus. When I get to campus, my stomach suddenly started to send some ‘toilet’ signal to me. When I checked on the men’s toilet on the third floor, it was closed due to the water problem. 2nd floor toilet is also having the same problem. When I asked, they said that the water on the whole campus is off, and it will always be off every morning, until… I don’t know, maybe 8 o’clock. Then I have to compensate with my urges until the toilets are opened again. And it’s not pleasant.

  25. Like what we have done two weeks ago, brainstorming is a powerful and an effective way to generate, share and maximize new ideas. Then, it works, beacause we can generate a lot of amazing ideas and advices for the freshman starting their first semester with IUP in a short time, I understand why brainstorming is always mentioned as a creative process to solve the problem or one of the easiest way to come up with great ideas. Here, the ideas offered up in a brainstorming are never wrong, they are just ideas that fulfil our mind and let them flow out. So, for these reasons, me and my teammates can express our ideas to the group without the fear of failure or ridicule. It’s really unforgettable when brainstorming also encourages widespread participation and involvement among us. Beside that, through these process feel like “we are all important” so the different ideas are respected and valued. Totally, brainstroming teach us about creativity, productivity and development.

  26. Brainstorm is the best way I think to make good essay, it was a common problem that people who want to write their opinion sometimes quite confuse with what to write. It's just the same with me that I sometimes feel confuse what to write as my opinion. To have a great brainstorm I think we need to love reading book or magazine , because by reading it will easier to generate the idea that we have. Reading many books will make we know about many things related to the topic, because we will have many reference. Sometimes I admire people that can write a book, because to make a book with at least 200 pages it will have at least 30.000 words on it.
I ever studying about generate our idea, the book say that most of our best idea come when we feel quite sleepy. We have this moment every 90-120 minutes per day. They way is firstly we need to take relax position, may be we can sit down on a sofa, or come out to take fresh air outside. After that we need to thinking about the problem that we need to generate for a while. Next step we should simply forget that's all and thinking like what we feel right now or what kind of food we prefer right now. Then the last is just take a break without thinking of anything. Commonly we can find many idea after all the steps, and that's brainstorm according to me.

  27. Brainstorming session in the class was really fun. I could write whatever I was thinking and it could generate many ideas. In my opinion, brainstorming is a good way to train your creativity. It helps you to think about new ideas and it will make you concentrate on the target. The results of brainstorming session in the class are quite useful for everyone. Some advices are so random but make sense. Maybe that’s because brainstorming does really make you think differently.

My favorite one is “Stop looking at the clock”. I experience it everyday. I often feel so bored during the two and half hours classes. I will be looking at the clock every minute and think “why does it never change?!” or something. Then I try to ignore the time and go with the flow. Do the games more seriously, ask if you don’t get it, or maybe just talk to your friends and do some discussions if it helps you to feel more ‘awake’ in the class.

My other favorite advice is “Try random things with new friends”. It sounds so fun, and I would like to do that. University is a place for us to find our true identity and to explore our passion and ability. It’s also a place for us to make good relations too. The important point is, don’t stop trying something new. You will find a lot of new awesome friends here. Be social so you will learn many new things from other people.

  28. I feel that the suggestion compiled from all the IUP students of 2013 are quite cute but at the same time it would be very useful to next year's IUP student of FEB. I think one of the more practical suggestion is 'get yourself a motorcycle/car. Unlike most developed, which is well equipped with public transportation, Indonesia’s public transport is not very well established. I am certainly one of those who have to worry over and over again on how to go back and forth the campus. As such I would hope to get my own car soon as by having my own personal transportation, it can bring my mind at ease whenever I have to go to the campus of when it is time to go home. This would allow me to be more focused on other things in school, like academics, extra curricular activities and organisation, allowing me to perform better.

  29. Brainstorming is one of my favourite things to do. In brainstorming I could find many explicit facts those happen near me. The things that we see it as a simple thing can turn out in to a precious thing in brainstorming process.
In making an essay, we need to put the idea that has an important point. How can we find important point of a certain topic? Sometimes it can waste a lot of time by thinking how we will start in writing an essay. Brainstorming can be the solution! I agree that generating question might be very helpful in writing essay.
From the activity that we did at class, I realize that what I have done when writing an essay is called brainstorming.
“Try random things with new friends”
I think it will be my favourite quote because the most memorable thing you do on school period isn’t the score at exam, but the crazy experience with your friends.

  30. Good to know that people lately understands what the meaning of brainstorming. Also, the side effect of using brainstorming, if we are talking about something. I suggest, don’t make a border or limit for yourself to thinking. Just let it flow, and enjoy your mind answering all the questions in a spontaneous way. Don’t say that because you are using brainstorming to write an essay, you are not filtering your words. You have to filters your word, even if it a brainstorming too. In brainstorming, people practice to become critical to think and respond. People also can judge whether this person is a smart enough to answer some questions or give a speech with brainstorming.

    “Explore other faculties canteens”
Well, recently I am doing this with my friends, because it is quite interesting for us to know more about other faculties canteens. Also, we can taste another menu beside FEB’s canteens, and this activity can help us to get to know more about our university.

  31. The brainstorming session that we held was very fun. It gave me the freedom to write any advice I want. What made it fun was that we wrote the advice together with our partners in one big paper, and we were not allowed to see what they were writing. The advice is useful for freshmen like us who do not have the idea on how college life is. The interesting thing is that the advice are all written by freshmen too! The advice are all funny and also useful. The advice that catches my attention is “Try random things with new friends”. I’ve tried some random things with my new university friends. For example, I rode my friend’s motorbike inside the UGM Museum’s garden. I believe that nobody has ever done that. The other random thing I’ve done with my friends is riding a car into the rektorat office. I drove my car into the office at 2am. They are all random and also funny in the same time. Actually all the advice written are useful. So thank you Mr. Coen for giving us this activity in the class.

  32. In my opinion brainstorming really helps you to find some ideas that you didn’t know when will you need that. Actually, I never did brainstorm before we did brainstorm last time. From that time I realized that now I have a activity that I have to do when I got bored or I don’t know what I must supposed to do. Because sometimes I often got a silly situation when I bored and finally I did something unproductive activity.
And I realized that brainstorming not only could refresh our ideas from our deepest brain. It can expend our minds too, why? Because when we did brainstorm with our friends in a group, it can expend our mind from thing that wrote from our friends. So beside brainstorm have a lot usage in my life, I think brainstorm will be my daily activities every month for a year ahead. I’m so thankful to introduce me with brainstorm

  33. Brainstorming is a very important thing to do when we want to write or explain about something. Like what Mr Adrian had said in the class, that a lot of times we know what we're gonna say but we just have to find a new creative way of saying it. And by doing this, we are forced to think of the little details that, when in normal conditions, we won't even think about. Then you will find a more attractive way of stating your point.
I totally agree with what Laura suggest, have your own transportation to campus. I'm surprised why I didn't write it as my suggestion in the class. Because that's exactly what my problem right now. I don't have my own transportation to go to campus. There are four of us in the family and only rely on one car. It's a lot of work every single day to organize the time so everybody can use the car. It's very hard. My dad thinks that riding motor bike is way too dangerous, but he hasn't bought another car yet. So now going back home from campus is a very complicated thing to do. That's why we should have our own vehicle to go to campus.

  34. We discussed “brainstorming” session in the class about two weeks ago. Brainstorming is a group or individual creativity technique by which efforts are made to find idea or conclusion for a specific problem and some people use brainstorming technique while they are making essay and that people who want to write their opinion sometimes quite are confused with the idea about what to write. In my opinion, this advice is useful for us to manage our study. Actually, I always look at the clock during the lecture and hoping the time will go faster, I don’t know why. That We should become active students in the class is important, because you also need organization skills in campus to get new experiences, because in FEB UGM there are a lot of events or organizations that we can join or participate. And that we should “try to make a lot of friends” is important too, because we need discussions about course or assignment.

  35. A brainstorm gave us an opportunity to expand the idea. We wrote all of the idea in our mind to the paper. This way produced the new idea of the topic. We tried a brainstorm activity in the class. We discussed about how to start the first semester in IUP class. We made a group consist of four members. Every group had a big paper and we should write our idea in the paper. I felt enthusiastic to join this activity. Every member had a different perspective and idea about the topic. Moreover, I found a strange or a crazy idea in the brainstorm game. That’s okay to have different idea. A brainstorm activity also helped us to think deeper about a problem. We would find a lot of solutions about a problem. A brainstorm also gave something new and fresh result for our problem. So, I suggested to use this way to explore our idea.

  36. The article is really interesting, by making a brainstorm in order to generate our ideas is really useful when you facing a situation that need ideas about what going to write or going to say. Based on my experience, making brainstorm is really helpful. Once when i had to lead a meeting, before the meeting i made a brainstorm to generates my ideas about what i’m going to say in the meeting later. It helps me a lot when leading the meeting, our meeting went well and all my thought were received well by the audience. When making a brainstorm, people usually start it in the middle of the paper. It is because, when we start in the middle we can generate our ideas into the all directions, and it will not limit our space to write.
Brainstorming that we did a couple weeks ago in the class was really fun, I learnt a lot. Everyone wrote their advice for the new student in order to face their new life in FEB UGM.

  37. My favorite part in EWS class is brainstorming. We have to write down all of the things that come up in our mind without thinking whether it’s right or wrong. And this topic is really interesting because most of us experienced the same thing. After read all of the advice in the blog, the most difficult thing to do is stop looking at the clock. I can't even pass through 15 minutes without looking at the clock and realize that the class is still going on until the next 2 hours. Sometimes when we have afternoon class, it is the most crucial time for me because I can easily yawn every 5 minutes. And then find a good coffee place is also necessary for the students. After passed almost two months in university life, I realize that most of my time is used for doing the assignments and I mostly do that outside the house. So it’s pretty important to find a good coffee or maybe tea place that has a good atmosphere to do my assignments. Overall, I love all of the advice for my first semester in IUP Program.

  38. Well first I would like to say thank you to Mr. Adrian for posting this article. This article actually quite funny but most of them are true. ‘Stop looking at the clock’, well this is so hard to do because as an IUP student we have 2,5 hours to be spent on each subject. It makes most of the students (including me) feel bored and sleepy at the class. That’s why we keep looking at the clock.

‘Explore other faculties’ canteens’. I’ve been doing this with my classmates almost every day. Because we’re often find that we don’t have a place to sit in cafeteria, so we decide to explore other faculties’ canteen. I think it is such a fun thing to do, exploring good foods around UGM with your friends. After exploring the other faculties’ canteens, we realize that FEB’s cafeteria can be considered as the expensive canteen with limited choice of food. So, that makes us prefer eating in other faculties’ canteens to our cafeteria.

  39. Before I begin to comment on this article, I would like to say thank you for putting my group's brainstorming ideas at the very top of the post.
I think brainstorming plays a very important thing in writing. In fact, before we begin to write, we should take a minute to brainstorm the ideas first. I, personally, always start writing an essay by brainstorming. That way, I can express all my ideas and then later on I an choose which ideas are related or unrelated.
Each of everyone might have different way of brainstorming. It doesn't always have to be neat or organize. I usually put the the title or main question at the very center and underline or highlight the keypoints. However, what important is that brainstorming can be the media for you to express all the thoughts that pops in your mind.
Brainstorming helps a lot especially in writing thousands of words of essay. It helps to make an essay more structural and not get out from the content. Sometimes, the biggest mistake that people always do in writing is the repetition of an idea. I think the best solution to that problem is by doing the brainstorming first before jumping out writing what goes on your mind.

  40. Generating Ideas with a Brainstorm is such a great idea. I have tried this method with my friends in the class before, and I think it’s pretty effective. It is like a tree that has loads of roots under it. Firstly, we can generate general idea of the topic, and then we can specify the general idea into some specific ideas. Well, other than that, I’m really interested in your way of thinking on the funny ideas Adrian. Magically, you can turn the funny ideas into some meaningful sentences. It makes me want to try it too. Should I try it? Then, I will try to turn a funny idea into a meaningful one. For example, like Safety First. Don’t forget to bring your homework. Don’t come to the class late. Bring your own calculator. Bring your own textbook. Bring your pencil case. Don’t use t-shirt to campus. Don’t forget to have breakfast. Etc. Is that how I should do it? Well, I’ve tried my best.

  41. My personal advice for new student: You should attend to Mr. Adrian class (English Writing Skills) because you will have so much fun. It is a good class for you to refresh your mind after having maths and economics from the previous day!

  42. I think generating ideas with brainstorming is a great idea. “The basic principle of the brainstorm was to NOT edit yourself; just let the ideas flow out, even if they seem a bit silly or repetitive. Write everything down. Quantity not quality (the quality comes later!)” I couldn’t agree more. In my past couple of years, I always edited my writing before I was done writing. And it turns out taking much more time for me to write something. And often my ideas were missing. Now, I just let the ideas flow out, and edit it when the ideas already written in the paper. Sometimes my writing became abstract, but after I edited it, my writing made sense. I also want to comment about student’s ideas in brainstorming session couple months ago. “Remember where you parked your motorbike.” I personally think that this is the best advice in this article. Sometimes I forgot where did I park my car and literally walking around GSP looking for it. Now, I have a favorite spot to park my car. “Find a good coffee place.” This is a great advice for students that starting their first semester in IUP, but not for me though. The last time I drank a can of coffee, I immediately brought to the emergency unit in Dr. Sardjito hospital. But it’s a great idea for other IUP student. Thank you for reading.
