The women's sport we want to see on the BBC

Priced out of showing Premier League football, the BBC needs to find an alternative – and women's sport could certainly pull in the viewers

The BBC's new director general's comments about women's sport smack a little of winning the booby prize (no pun intended). Outpriced by commercial rivals for the rights to Premier League games, George Entwistle told the Radio Times, "We are simply no longer in that league," and that an alternative would be to target less mainstream sports. "Look at growing interest in women's sport and what opportunities might there be for us in the future as different sports come to the public's attention. Women's sport could be a real opportunity for the BBC."

Top viewing: Jessica Ennis wins gold at the Olympics.

No mention of why, as a public service broadcaster, women's sport hasn't long been given the coverage it deserves instead of being considered something to fill the sports schedules when you can't afford the sport you want, but still. After the success of female athletes at the Olympics and Paralympics - and the number of viewers who tuned in to watch them - this year could prove a turning point for women's sport on freeview television (some women's rugby and football is broadcast on Sky, ESPN and British Eurosport).

What would work well? "International football has developed to a superb standard," says Sue Tibballs, chief executive of the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation. "In Germany, when the women's world cup was on [last year], women's football was everywhere, and advertisers and brands got involved." In the UK, MPs had to intervene to get the BBC to show England's quarter-final match against France – its original plan was to show repeats of Porridge and Flog It!. Happily, today England's qualifier against Croatia is on BBC2.

Internationally, Tibballs says: "Netball is also interesting. It's a huge sport in Australia. There is some profile on Sky but there's an opportunity to show more. A lot of the sports people enjoyed at the Olympics were things such as judo, boxing, rowing. A bit more creativity could be applied in creating packages that profile those sports, rather than just turning up to events." A magazine show, perhaps, along the lines of the much-missedGrandstand, would be good. "We're very much compromised by the dominance of Premier League football in this country and I think 2012 really woke everyone up to diversity."

  1. I think there are many reasons why women’s sport should be projected around the world. An example of this is to invite more women to participate in sporting activities as it would retain them healthy. In addition to that, sports could also be taken as possible future career, evidence prove that there is an increase of women football participants each year, as it is an alternative choice for those who love sports or do not want to stay in front of a desk figuring out problems.

Despite of that, they do need support from the entertainment world to advertise them, to record their games, and to have some fun together whether as audience, or players. Women are not dead ringer of each other, they have different interest, they think of something differently from each other, so I guess it is a need for us to support women’s sports. It is not like we will not enjoy their sports because in fact, many people around the world love WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) and they love them for various reasons.

I think the author of this article hit the nail on the head when he said that women’s sport was just a fill for those hollow gaps on the sport entertainment schedule.

  2. I think it is good to have women to participate in sport competitions and such. I think that these days being a woman is not a biological disadvantage anymore. There are a lot of women who are more powerful than man, just look at the woman in weightlifting section and compare it to the normal guy in some random streets. What I think matter is determination to do sports.
As far as I am concerned, BBC needs to continue their support to broadcast the women’s sport. Not only that they are increasing their own viewers, but they are also being a big supporter for this so-called equality between men and women. As you could see, the big-games all over the sports world are still dominated by men. I hope that someday women’s sport could compete with the men’s sport. I would like to see the day when someone wears football’s jersey with a woman’s name in it.

  3. Women's sport? I have pros and cons about this. But even so, having more women's sport in television is, by the distance of earth and moon, too much, and I rejected that idea, despite the pros.

First, the pros. Yes, as Oza said, participating in sport would keep them healthy. It's a good thing so that women don't really need to keep asking men (not some random stranger, obviously) if they, er... "have additional weight". If you're asked that question by a woman, gentleman, don't bother answering because no matter what your answer is, they will either sulk or give you a smack in the face (It's a trap!). The second reason is so that they have something to spend their time. Women tend to spend their time om shopping; a walking closet used by a husband and a wife may (or maybe always) contain more of wife's clothes than husband's clothes. The third reason is that women can raise their attractiveness through sport, not just appearance and personality.

The cons? The attactiveness would be the starting point, and it came from the sport itself. Sports like American Football and Weightlifting has their women wearing a rather revealing clothes compared to men's suit. See it for yourself, if you do care. Another reason is, I deem hardworking sports like soccer, judo, and boxing as things that would be too much for women. I mean, women playing soccer for the entire 90 minutes, not to mention the extra time if the scores are same? They would need lots of women to play and substitute other players. There's one more reason, but it's a private one,

BBC can put more women's sport, but I think putting a women sport commentator would be an interesting idea. Women's voice are clearer than men's voice sometimes, no?

    1. You had my curiosity when you mentioned the attractiveness part, but after I read the rest of it, now you have my attention. First of all, I understand if the sight of women wearing tight sports suits can be too much for some people, considering the differences in cultures and religions that exist in our society today. However, if someone in this day and age is still honestly baffled and confused as to why women can play more masculine sports such as judo or boxing, then bless our nation. Have you ever watched a professional women's football match? Perhaps an Olympic women's football match? Then I suggest you should, because you will understand how "playing soccer for the entire 90 minutes" is not a problem at all for these women and they definitely do not need "lots of women" for the subs as they also practice the 3-sub rule that is applied in men's football with general ease.

Finally, relegating women in sports to the commentator chairs is a dubious alternative at best. Do you really think that the quality of sports commentaries depends on the clarity of the voices of the commentators? Then you will be disappointed to find out that, actually, what sports audiences want to hear is thorough analysis and great content in general, not angel-like voices that will soothe your ears and make you sleep like a baby. "Women's voice are clearer than men's voice sometimes"? Perhaps you need to learn more about the world and you will see that this kind of stereotype more often than not does not hold true.

I do not think you are wrong, I just think that you have very different views on women in sports, which irks me a lot. After all, who can dispute the sporting achievements of Jessica Ennis, Ronda Rousey (the first female UFC champion), or Serena Williams? I, for one, certainly cannot beat them in their respective sport and neither can you.

      Delete
    2. You're right. I only see the stereotype of women's sport, since I rarely watched them. I still stick with my attractiveness opinion, but I should have dug more on women's sport before making opinion for this article.

Have I ever watched a professional women's football match? Honestly, no. I never even watch men's football match, especially the live one on the basis that most of them are aired at midnight, and before it even started, I was taught by my parents to go to sleep at 10pm, the latest at 11pm. You could say I've been programmed to do so. Yes, I could watch the replays, but seeing the results on the morning news makes me lose interest in watching it.

I may sound like a massive idiot, but the idea of women sport commentator isn't... really my idea. Perhaps watching news with female newscasters is too much for me that I just boasted that idea. I didn't really mean it, and I'm really sorry if anyone ever felt annoyed with it from the bottom of my heart.

  4. Well I agree that sports on television need to be mixed between women’s sport and male’s sport. Nowadays sports that being broadcasted by the televisions is all about sports that related with men. Just like football, rugby, racing, and even wrestling. For the first maybe we can get attracted but in the end it can be boring too. Sports television need to be mixed, this also have a physiological effect for the females. Women’s sport that being broadcasted can be one of the motivations for the women who watching it. This also can solve the problem between male and female about male domination. I also like to watch women’s sport. Sometimes I can’t believe that women are able to do some sports that according to me it’s supposed to be for men. For example like weightlifting, now in the Olympics weightlifting is not only for men but also for women. Surprisingly now the total weight for weightlifting is being considered to be equal between male and female. So, I think that sports television need to be mixed between males sport and females sport. Besides it would be more attractive it can also solve the problem about gender inequality problem.

  5. I would like to see women sport in tv, well I only see female soccer though and some kind of female indoor inline skate. But American football , baseball or even rugby would be very interesting to watch because those sports are unusual for women to play with. Imagine the women trying to crush each other to steal the ball in rugby that would be very intense haha. I remember watching some kind of indoor inline skate in Youtube VICE chanel where each person smack and push each other out of the track, and that is very intense because you would never imagine a women would do something like that and what makes it interesting they use make up as beautiful as they can before the match. The interesting thing about women who do sports is , they look boyish but they also keep their feminism also like maria sarapova did , she looks strong and fierce but in magazine she looks flawless and beautiful.

  6. Women sport, why not? I think it’s a good idea to watch women’s sport, and i will tell you a secret that we (men) also love to watch women’s sport in TV. This is good news that BBC will broadcast it and could be a real opportunity for the BBC. We are as the viewer usually watch the men’s sport like football, rugby, wrestling, basketball but like geovani said “For the first maybe we can get attracted but in the end it can be boring too”, Today Men’s sport are a dime a dozen, most channel in my television broadcast it, it’s too mainstream.
How about mix it together, if we can mix each other it will be a perfect one. Like UFC program, (it’s a fighting championship) and the fighter not only a men, but also women, they can fight bravely just like a man. It’s an interesting mix, and this program can solve the problem about men domination in sport.

  8. Nowadays, most overall coverage of the sport media is devoted to male’s sport like football, basketball, or wrestling. In the media attention scale the male athletes receive more media attention than female athletes. Just like last year, during the Olympic games most of the television channel that I watched only focusing on male athletes like Usain Bolt. Although there are many gifted female athletes who won at Olympic games. In my opinion, this inequality of attention between women’s and male’s sports is based on the gender stereotypes. The male is likely to portrayed as “strong” compared to female athletes. However, there are many female athletes are just as strong as the male athletes.

I agree with what Geovani Laskar said, that sports on television need to be mixed between women’s sport and male’s sport. Because I think that the men’s sport is too mainstream and boring today. I really want to watch women’s sport to be broadcasted on TV more often, like WNBA. So, the television or any other media will not only focused to male’s sport. Because there are many of gifted female athletes need to be advertised more often because they deserved it. Just because they are female it doesn’t mean that they can’t do sports like the way men athletes did. I think by broadcasting the women’s sports it could be a great opportunity for the BBC, to think that after the success of female athletes at the Olympic games which successfully increasing the number of viewers and gaining the public’s attention. Moreover, by broadcasting the women’s sports it could also help to solve the problem about the inequality of attention between women’s and male’s sports.

  9. I do fully agree that there should be more women sports shown and that television channels should support that. Probably it is due to narrow-minded people that women doing sports is still not that popular as male sports, especially in soccer. But the women that do sports professionally are not less good or interesting as their male counterparts, they just can´t be the fastest or strongest human being on this planet because of the weaker bodily constitution of women in general. I´m also doing athletics since I´m eight years old and I am therefore really interested in women sports especially during big events such the world championship, because I can compare their results in the different disciplines with my ones. This is quite fun, but I have to admit I am always the big looser in such comparisons. Besides big events I am not following sports in the TV, although I think there are a lot of new disciplines that would be worth getting to know more about.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree that women sports should have a proper broadcasting from the network. A lot of people still not familiar with the sports that are played or participated by the women. Mostly because they did not get a chance to see it before. They never saw it so they never got used to it.
So, I think it's a job for the network to introduce them to a whole lot more people to make it more popular. The women athletes are under appreciated by the community simply because they don't really know about it. If only the women sports are well broadcasted, it will be more accepted by the community.
The network should also broadcast the new kinds of sport. Just like the women "popular" sports, there are, I think, still more sports that are not quite known by the people that need more attention out there.
By seeing women athletes on television, the stereotype of women can also be converted. Nowadays the definition of beautiful woman is the one that has super slim everything. But it can finally converted if people are used to see the image of strong woman, muscular woman, and fierce woman. To show that to be strong and have muscle is also beautiful.

  11. As a sport lover, i would love to see women sports being shown in televisions. Up to this day, women sports is still considered as a minority. Everytime we watch sports on TVs, whether it is football, basketball, or even volleyball, it is usually men sports. It is rare to see women sports being shown in TVs.
Women is not as strong as men, that’s what every people thinks. From that mindset, people conclude that women sports is not worth to show by the television broadcasters or not worth to see by the spectators.
But, these days, some people’s mindset is changing. As we see that nowadays the equality between men and women becomes a big issue worldwide. So does the women sports. Women sports is starting to be shown in TVs.
One moment happened when i watched Italian football match with Laziale (fans of Lazio, which is my favourite team). After the match, we changed the channel, then we all shocked, there was a Lingerie Football Match in TV. Yes, that was about women playing football in lingerie. It was funny yet weird, but then we watched it together as almost all of us were men. That was weird, but we have to admit that it is something attractive, right?

  12. As a person who loves sports, it would be very lovely for me to see women’s sports on television. For me, women’s sport is still considered as a minority sports. The appreciation of women’s sport is still in a minimum amount. In my opinion, if we love men’s sports, we have to love women’s sports as well because the difference between the two is only the athletes. Men’s sports’ athletes are men and women’s sports’ athletes are women. If men’s football has big supports from around the world, women’s football should have the same supports. Because the sport is not difference, only the players are. I always watch Tennis Grand Slams every time they are televised. I don’t only watch the men’s matches, but I also watch the women’s matches. If women’s football was broadcasted in television, I would watch it as much as I watch men’s football. I always have a big appreciation for female athletes as much as I have for male athletes.

  13. As BBC no longer has rights to Premier League games, they need to find an alternative to replace the show and keep the viewer’s rating stable. One of the alternative options is women’s sport. Some women’s sport is broadcast on paid TV channels; it gives a limited chance for viewers who don’t subscribe to those channels. BBC, as a free view channel can take that opportunity to broadcast women’s sport to replace the schedule for Premier League games or other sports show on their channel. This can keep the viewer’s rating stable or even attract more viewers.

Besides women’s sport, BBC can also consider other kind of sports that other TV channels don’t broadcast. There are a lot of interesting sports that are only broadcasted on some local-regional TV. Another alternative is BBC can do a research on viewers’ interests and come up with some new ideas. As mentioned in the article, a bit more creativity is needed to create an attractive sports show.

  15. I think that the BBC is making a good choice by leaving the battle about broadcasting the big football matches. I always enjoy watching sports that are not that known, for example last Olympics windsurfing was reintroduced and broadcasted. I really enjoyed watching it, also because I windsurf in the Netherlands, but still.

Watching 4 woman play volleyball in too tight bikinis on a beach in Brazil, what does a viewer wants more? It is not only nice to watch but it is also good to introduce people to less known sports, such as karate, surfing, swimming, volleyball, etc. Maybe when people see the professionals on television they get enthusiastic about it.

I do foresee some dangers in this move for the BBC. Due to the rise of the internet and its possibilities, people are more likely to watch things whenever they want, wherever they want. Except for the big events that unites you, like the big football matches.

  16. I love to do many kind of sports; basketball, football, golf, swim, and many other kinds. But I also love to watch them either from the TV or live from the place where it’s going on. But I don’t really like watching women sports that much, because as a male, I don’t find it quite intresting for me. I would rather watch men sports which always have alot body contact and require great skills such as NBA matches, Football leagues matches, NFL matches, any many more. But my mom very intrested at watching women tennis matches. Ofcourse because she was great tennis athletes back then when I was not born yet and she still in a good shape for doing tiring sport like that. She has won many local trophies when she was in her highschool times. She also joined national’s women tennis so-called community. I think it depends on the gender. Boys will be watching men sports and so girls will be watching women’s

  17. I think it is good to have women to participate in sport competitions and such. With the existence of female empowerment, I think that these days it’s time that women also participate in all the activities. Sports television need to be mixed, this also have a physiological effect for the females. Women’s sport that being broadcast can be one of the motivations for the women who watching it. This also can solve the problem between male and female about male domination. I agree with Farah Auliya Zulfa comment, it could change how we see a beautiful woman is. For me nowadays a beautiful woman is not a super skinny woman, but a woman that is independent, strong, and sophisticated. And we also have to admit, a girl that do sports is attractive. Right ?

  18. I agree that women’s sports need more coverage from television broadcasters. Not only it is fun to watch but also to inspire other women out there to do some sports. With more coverage on women sports, it will help those female athletes to have better job prospect. This is because countries will now scout not only for men but also women.
If women sports were to become big, it will certainly reduce number women’s unemployment. in football industry where most football clubs are willing to spend millions euro to hire the best player they found. Then if women’s football were as famous as men football, I believe the same thing would happen as well.
The ways women play the sports are way different when the men do. For instance, last women’s world cup, their gameplay is totally different. During corners men will likely to spread all over the penalty box, while the women will grouped in front of the goal post. Their tackle, dribble and pass are different as well.

  19. I think it is really discriminating that third parties like MP have to intervene to force a broadcast of an important game of the women’s team. Also this is partly caused by the little attention by the public. Maybe BBC experienced a positive feedback because they broadcasted the women’s game and now they start to think differently and want to focus on something new. Considering the rising number of competitors they need to develop their own strategy to differentiate from their rivals.
However, in some sports like tennis, female players are popular and acknowledged by the audience. Andrea Petkovic, Steffi Graf and Angelique Kerber are/were well-known female tennis players in Germany. Also like it was mentioned in the article, I can only confirm that the women’s world cup in 2011 was a big event and people – men and women - watched the games via public viewing and experts admitted that the team was performing very well.

  20. I'd agree that with team sports the women's games aren't given nearly enough coverage. But it is a shame though the coverage that would be given for women’s sport is because apparently “BBC no longer has rights to Premier League games, they need to find an alternative to replace the show and keep the viewer’s rating stable.”
The question is why did not BBC broadcast women’s sports since long ago? Even before BBC were outpriced by commercial rivals for the rights to Premier League games. But I must admit though their alternative to cope the stableness of the rating is creative.
By broadcasting women’s sports also could encourage women to do sports well for the sake of the health of women in the planet earth and also to encourage women to pursue career in sports, to be athletes.
As one has said that “…….to show that to be strong and have muscle is also beautiful.”

  21. I think BBC is doing the right thing here. Its because that womens sport hasn't long been given the coverage it deserves. But it's good that BBC is trying to broadcast more of women sport. I totally agree that womens sport should be compared or equal with mens, because the sport that men can do is also the sports that women can. Sometimes they could even match them. By broadcasting women sport, it might affect on womens daily life, they might get encourage to do sports. This is a good thing because the percentage of women doing sports is still a little if we compare it to men. This is also good for their health and might help them gain higher levels of confidence and also lower levels of depression. In this case, they wouldn't be under estimated by men anymore. So its great that BBC is doing this and I think should continue broadcasting womens sport to increase and satisfy their viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Women on sports in TV are a great idea to replace the football league. For me, I like watching women to play men sports especially basketball. Even though I think it is more interesting to watch men playing rather than women (in this case basketball) because there are a lot more actions, they are playing harder and so much physical contact either it is dunk or layup. I didn’t say that a woman who's playing sports is boring, they play great, they are talented and they probably better than men in general. But I think if I'm comparing which is better, Men on sports or women? I prefer Men of course in overall because they are a lot more entertaining. I'm agreeing with Laskar opinion about there should be mixed between women's sport and men's sport, because it will be more entertaining when you can watch men's sport and after that you watch women's sport later.
