If you owned a cafe in Yogya...

...what ideas would you have for making it different from [or better than] all the other cafes that Yogya already has?

  1. If I own a café in jogja , the concept will be a tree house café or a hobbit house café like in the shire village from movie lord of the rings where you can enjoy various type of coffee and drinks from around the world while enjoy the relaxing night breeze and starry night in the sky . The place would be around Kaliurang Mountain but no too far from jogja because the ambiance is suitable for this kind of café. The café will serve not only coffee but Indonesian and European snacks and some main course will be available too. The price range of one glass/cup of coffee will be around Rp 35.000 - 50.000 , it’s a bit pricey because I want to make the coffee with a high quality ingredients because I want to give my best service to the customer and make them feel worth it for coming here after a quite long trip to reach this place .

Would you attract enough custom if you were located so far from the city?

  2. If I owned a cafe in Yogya, I would make it as 'K-Pop' cafe, since I'm a big fan of K-pop. I would insert the Korean idols' names in the menu, like for example, 'Sehun and Luhan's Bubble Milk Tea'. The furnitures in the cafe would be made from woods. I also would like to put the Korean idols' posters on the wall, and played the korean music as well. The menu would be just like other cafés but with the cheaper price. In the corner of the café, I would provide post-it stickers and I'd ask the customers to write their messages for my café and attached them on a big board. I also wanted to sell korean snacks, ice creams, and korean merchandises. I would play korean songs in my café and on the weekends, I'd play the famous korean variety shows on the TV in the cafe, like 'Running Man' (this variety show is kinda popular in Korea), and once in a month, I would play korean movies. Another important point, the café would be located at the strategic location, for example, in Jalan Kaliurang. I also would ask my employees to serve the customers well, and I would give discount for students every wednesday.

Would you have to import these things? Would they be expensive?

  3. Glad you ask about this, Sir! I really want to have a maid café in Jogja. Maid café is very famous in Japan, but there is no maid café in Jogja. Maid café is a café with cute girls wearing a cute maid dress as the maid. There’s no butler in this café. I will make a very cute black and white maid dress! My customer can gain point every time they visit my café. Those points will give them a change to take a picture with one of the maid (but only if he/she win to play a game against the maid) or take a picture of herself (or himself if he want to) wearing the maid costume. But I will strictly protect all the maids in my café. There will be a security in my café. My customer can’t ask my maid’s real name or phone number. The most important one is that my customer can’t take a picture of my maid. Harassing my maids is strongly prohibited!
I can go on with my ideas of café, but it will be a 500 words essay so I better stop. I really hope that I can open my own café someday. -Calista-

This is what my wife would say to me. In fact, I think she would ban me from going there altogether, just to be on the safe side!

    2. Calista, I'm interested with your cafe concept. I’m pretty sure you will be strict to the job seekers who will be the maid. And I think the costumers would be mostly guys. Well, if you successfully open a maid café in Jogja, will you also open a butler café too? And I want to ask what kind of game that the customer can play with the maid?

    3. Sir, are you seriously will harass my maid? Hahaha… Well, if you want to go there, I will make sure to ask my security to monitor you a little bit stricter than other customers. I will keep it as a secret if you come to my café. Hahaha…

    4. Hello Melissa! I’m glad to know that you actually like it! Yes, I will be strict to select the maids (not only for their appearance, but also for their behavior). I want to have polite and cheerful maids to light up my café.
“And I think the costumers would be mostly guys.”
Well, maybe you are right. But in Indonesia, I’m not sure about it. I think most of my customers will be young girl (elementary school until collage students). Most of Indonesian boys, especially in Yogyakarta, are too shy to come even if they want to. Well, Bima told me about this after he read my writing.
“will you also open a butler café too?”
Yes, I will definitely open a butler café for the next project! I have plenty ideas about café. I will note you as my special customer in my Butler café. Do you want me to tell you about my butler café concept too?
“And I want to ask what kind of game that the customer can play with the maid?”
Good question! I am thinking about a simple game. Maybe they can play blackjack or traditional games. Do you have any suggestion about this, Melissa? Something simple but fun, do you have any suggestion?
Once again, thank you for asking Melissa.

  4. “When you try to open a business which focus on culinary, it’s really difficult to combine three factors at the same time. Those three factors are services, quality of food, and the design of the place. You can just emphasize at one or maybe two of them”
My mom told me about that and I think she’s true. Based on my experience, I never find a restaurant which apply those factors at the same time. If the food is so delicious and the place is so cozy, I’m pretty sure that the services will not really good, maybe the waitress is not friendly, the service is not satisfied, etc.
If I own a cafe in Jogjakarta, I want to combine those three factors at the same time. I want to make an interesting design which can comfort my customer. I want to make a café with garden theme on it, there will be a large green grass and flowers, so it feels like we have our own garden party. For the food, I want to serve beautiful food which is glut and delicious. For the services, I want to make a training for my employees once a week and give them bonus if the customers satisfied with their services.

  5. If I owned a café in Yogyakarta, I would like to make it like a cabin of a train. The design will be like a train carriage, the situation will be made as similar as possible to the real train. I will make a train with a white theme, so all the elements in the train is white. Why I chose white? It's because my café will always look clean. Consequently, I need extra care to keep it always clean. To support the theme, the waitress would dress up as the conductor and the chef as a machinist.
I also think about whether the café will be “all you can eat and drink”. So, the passengers (customers) will need to buy the “train” ticket in the beginning and use it for take anything they want.
Beside the theme, I think that service and the taste of the foods and beverage would be very vital. So, the service should be nice and eager to help. Then, the menu doesn’t need to be very varies. I think it’s better to have fewer menus with superb quality on every single menu. And if it is possible, I would like to make some train carriages with a different choice of cuisine in every coach.

Are we talking about a current, typical, bought-second-hand-from-Japan, Indonesian train or a classic old fashioned kind of train?

Would you want to locate this cafe near a train station?

  6. If I owned a café in Yogyakarta I would do a lot of things different.

    - First I would hire only the people for my café who I really need. In whole Indonesia you see there is more staff then work. Rather than hiring fewer people, they just are ok with the fact that the half of their staff isn’t working. I think it is better to hire fewer people and give those people more salary. When they earn more salary at your café you motivate them more to keep their job.

    - Second I would serve the drinks or/and food at the same moment. When I am going out for dinner with my friends, here in Indonesia, it is common that they do not serve all the food at the same time. So sometimes one of my friends is already finished when I am still waiting for my course. That is not the idea of having a dinner together. You have to serve all the food at the same time. Maybe you have to wait than a little bit longer, but that doesn’t matter. Last week I eat in a hotel that wants to be the place for western people to go to. And there we got first our main course and after it they brought the soup. They just don’t understand how it works. Maybe it is their culture that they don’t mind, but in my café matters like this will never happen.

These are the most important things that I would change if you compare it with an Indonesian café.

  7. If I owned cafe in Yogyakarta , I would named it 'Blind Cafe'. I do not know exactly whether this concept already applied in Jogja. But in my hometown, Bandung, there is a cafe with this concept. Blind cafe means that the consumer will eat their food in the dark. There will be no lamp in this cafe. They will not allowed to bring their phone or something that can produce a light. So they must be entrust their stuffs in front of the cafe.
First, I will make my cafe has a hi-tech concept. So before the consumer entered the cafe, they have to order the food by iPad or something with the touchscreen technology. Then, the waitress will accompanied them to get into the cafe with the light which brought by the waitress. After that the waitress will leaving them without any light. So , when the food come, they will enjoying the food without knowing where part the egg or the meat place. They should be grope in the dark.
When they done with the food, they can ask the waitress to lead them out from the cafe. And they can take their stuffs back.

  8. Hmm, interesting topic. Well, I always want to have a café here in Jogja. Since I was a baby I lived in Jakarta. In Jakarta there are so many cafés with different style and concept. If maybe someday I will open a café here in Jogja, I will make it a minimalize café with furniture that made by woods. I have a simple taste therefore I would make my café to be an elegant café with only a simple concept. I’m also a little bit of perfectionist; I like something that has its perfect quality. My motto is simple ‘quality than quantity’. I’ll make my café to be only a small café not that big maybe only for 20-30 people. It’s easier to manage smaller café than a big café; we don’t need many waiters so it will reduce our cost. Although my café is going to be only a small café but I’ll give the best quality than any other café here in Jogja.

  9. Nice topic Sir. Well if i owned a cafe in Yogyakarta I will make it very interesting. First I will start with the architecture. I will built the cafe with traditional taste, from the floor I wont't use marble, or other sparkling tile, instead I will use traditional tile which is hand made. The shape really not interesting but more than it I will show how is the value of traditional culture. For your information this tile is more expensive than common tile. Next for the wall I will integrate between "gedeg" and some woody style. To make it more interesting more over in night time I will add some yellow light to make warm impression to consumer.
For the food I will serve from snack, great meal, dessert with reachable price. Then as a business person I will take my profit much from the drinks, because I think people come there at least buy a drinks. I will serve many kind of drink, but especially I tend to focus in many kind of wine or sampanye. So my consumer target is international tourist.
The most different value from my cafe is that I will have jazz and rege music that perform live every day playing alternately.

    2. Yes absolutely, I realize about that before, so I already plan to avoid if there was a crush accident. For your information I was born in Papua, so it will be easy for me to establish hospitality with Papua people in Jogjakarta. Then I can utilize them to be my"preman".
I know how to treat them, and it is easy for me to establish business relationship with them.

  10. Interesting. If I owned a cafe in Yogya, ofcourse i gave to unnderstand the market in Yogya, which most of the people is a college-student so first think I would like to work on is about the concept and the price. The price should not too expensive. About the concept, I want to sell like a puff filled with various taste of cream with a various type of blended-tea. I want to make the various creams like caramel, capuccino, mocha, vanila, chocolate and many more, and about the tea, I want to sell the world-wide blended tea, like mint tea, oolong tea, and many more, the innovation is ''blended tea'' it will bring the best freshness for us. Honestly I got the idea of selling a food like puffs was from a "beard papa's" store, its a store that I usually come to buy a gift for my relative, it's store is in Soekarno-hatta International airport. Well puff snack is very delicious. Back to my cafe, about the architecture I will make it a minimalist-cozy place, so that attract the teenager to come, so not just come to Kalimilk. Beside puffs, I also want to serve various cook of meat, but in a small size because my concept is not a restaurant concept. About the various tea, is because many indonesian also like tea, beside coffee, and tea is also a freshful-beverage, moreover if its blended, imagine how delicious will it be. The last is about the price, I would not put an expensive price but also not too cheap price, lets just say in average price among other cafe, but I will try to provide a super-service.

  11. I always wanted to open a business in Jogja, especially a café. I f I owned a café, I will make it fits for the teens, because in Jogja there are many students from all over Indonesia, even many overseas students came to study in this city. So the market approach is attended for college students. There will be many entertainment spot in the café, like a pool, card games, board games and any fun stuff. There have been a café in Jogja that have that kind of stuff plus some entertainment games such as Wii, X-box and Playstation, but they don’t provide a good foods and drinks. So foods and drinks quality must priorities to make a good café. And then one more think that important is the place where it built, it must strategic or in the center of the city, because there are many good café out there that lack of costumers just because they didn’t concerned about the area.

  12. In my class in operations management we got a task where we had to make our own company or product. I planned to make a brownie café who was supposed to deliver Scandinavias best brownie. I would offer my customers a brownie with the best combination of sticky and solid, with only good quality ingredients. The name of the café would be The Cocoa Bean, and that's because I wanted to hire a cocoa expert who would do research on a unique cocoa bean. Then my product would be different from the rest.

Maybe I can open one of my «The Cocoa Bean» shops in Jogya as well. I know they already have the «Amanda» store. I have tried it of course, but I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed. The taste was really good, but the consistency was more like an ordinary chocolate cake. I like it best when it's really sticky.

  13. If I own a café in Jogjakarta the concept of that café will be like a place to relax and spend a long time there with affordable price. My experience in 5 years living in Jogjakarta and try many different café around Yogya is the low-priced café here is very loved by the visitors, we can see like Legend Café, and Semesta Café is always full even if in the weekdays, the price that listed for their drinks and foods is not more than 20.000 rupiahs.
In my opinion, some people here thought that they don’t need the quality, all they want is they can full their stomach with cheap price. Besides it, another essential part to make a café in Yogya is the process of the making of their food or drink is has to be fast, the customers here don’t want to wait long for their food and their drink. And last, the place has to be cozy and friendly for the visitors so they can spend long time in your café.

    2. That is very good question sir. That is the challenge of doing business. There is no business that is perfect. So if that condition happens in my café I will allow them to stay in my café, I know that if they spend a long time in my café with little spending will reduce our profit, but this problem could be solved if you have many tables and chairs, so even if there is some students that spend a long time in my café there are still some chairs and tables that is empty and available to sit, and I believe that the guests that coming to my café is not all like going to spend long time with minimum expense, if you ever come to café with the same ideas like Legend Café or Semesta Café they have so many chairs but always full, maybe even if there is some people that spend long time in my café I will allow them, that’s the challenge of doing business! you should think for every possibilities and cannot do all perfectly.

I will provide a screen, a touch screen computer, a lot of movie, and a projector in each table. The customer will choose the movie and enjoy the food. How about the menu? I offer Italian cuisine, such as pasta, pizza, or calzone. How about the price? I offer economical price. My market target is student. So, I must make economical price. My café is located in the center of the city. The building is very artistic. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. The café opens 24 hours. So, you can watch midnight movie in this café. We also have private dining room with a big screen and sofa for our customer. The waiter will use costume, such as superman, ironman, or naruto. Let’s enjoy your favorite movie here!

    2. Even ‘historical theme’ sounds boring, but can you see that teenager style on their suits maybe not at all but it seems that style back to old times. Also Yogyakarta has big memories from their strong culture. From that situation I can conclude that many teenager become excited for the vintage theme. They often said that ‘back to 80’s’ was so incredibly cool. Instead there is research said that most of Indonesian people was so excited with hang out, for only have fun just like ‘chit-chat’ with their friends. Combine the situation between many teenagers in Indonesia especially Yogyakarta who loved ‘historical theme’ and the research said that most of Indonesian people loved hang out, I saw an opportunities to make a café like I said in my first comment in this article. And without forget that old generation who loved ‘vintage theme’ because in their mind that wasn’t vintage them but they think it was their theme. So I think that ideas will be successful business sir ☺

  16. If I had a cafe in Jogja, I would make it a students only cafe. A cafe where students can relax and party. A place with one of the finest internet connections possible in Jogja. I experience in the Netherlands that students pubs or cafes are doing better in business than cafes with a different target group. Students like to go out more often.
Internet is also a major point of attention in order to become successful. Students need reasons to go to this café instead of other cafes; people like themselves, good internet, nice drinks, good music, nice lounge sets, and of course a dance floor. I still haven’t find a place like this in Jogja so maybe this is the chance for Indonesian entrepreneurs to start a profitable business.
I am not sure if it is easy to start a café in Jogja, so maybe you first have to make some friends at the police department.

  17. I don't know if i want to make my own cafe or not later on. But i'm kind of interested with the question and I would like to put some ideas about making my own cafe.

So, if I have my own cafe, I will named it Full-House Cafe. I will make it in a big house with minimalize furniture and my concept is hang-out in your house. It's basically just like having cafe in your own house. There will be some kind of room models inside it, there are kitchen room, living room, bedroom, garden, balcony, and rooftops. I will also make garage for people yo park their cars and motorcycles.
In the kitchen room, I will make a bar just like minimalize model of kitchen, so if you want to see the process of making the foods, you can see it directly. In the bedrooms, i will put some little beds with table in the middle of the bed, some sofas, tables and TV so people can enjoy their foods while relaxing. In the living room, I will design it just like living rooom in the house with sofas, big TV, and of course tables. There will be AC in those kitchen room, living room, and bedroom. In the garden, there is also a pool and basically I will make the garden side like any garden restaurants. You will be able to make a garden party in there because I will make it bigger. Like some other big houses, there will be balcony. The balcony side, I will turn it into romantic atmosphere and recommended for candle light dinner with live music. And the rooftops won't be any different with the balcony side. The rooftops is basically combination between garden side and balcony side. It's more for people to rent it maybe for giving his girlfriend surprise or mayve for have some privacy dinner and so on.

I really want to makr that kind of cafe. I'm sure, this Full-House cafe is still rare. So, if i have some excess money in the future soon, I might make this Full-House cafe.

    2. yes sir, I think so. I came up with this idea when i was thinking about my dream house. I always want to make my house becomes more alive. So , this Full-House Cafe will just be like when you are in your own house. I know this cafe would be middle-class cafe but as what i see in Yogyakarta nowadays, There are a lot of middle-upper class cafe in Yogyakarta and some people are bravely to pay high for food that's actually shouldn't be that expensive. But it will be different in my cafe. I might put the price high but i will sell high-class services, luxurious view inside the house, and also cosiness atmosphere.
At first, i did not want to make cafe. But after I wrote this idea , I think i want to make it real one day. I am pretty interested to make it real. Just hope i have enough fund to make it real.

I would make the café building looks like a cabin. Inside of the café, I would use wooden furniture. I would make the café looks simple. Outside of the café, there would be trees around it, and also I would provide large parking area. I would offer free Wi-Fi for my customers. And also, I would offer many variant of food. For my workers, especially waitress, I would ask them to always smile to customers. They would have to say thank you, please, sorry and excuse me, whenever needed. Because, I find there are some waitresses and cashiers in some places not do that. I would set the price low so, my customers that are students could visit my café often. There would be special discount every Friday and Monday for my customers.

The café would be the coziest place to watch football every week or every matchday. It would have football merchandises and decorations in it. The paintings of the wall would be the paintings of some great players, for example, Diego Maradona, David Beckham, or Lionel Messi. The café would also have affordable price in order to fulfill the needs of watching football for every football fans. The atmosphere of watching football match in this café would resemble the atmosphere we could get in stadium. The food that is served would be snacks and also main course. The café would not only accommodate football fan, but it would also accommodate the needs of the people who just wants to hang out or wants to have a meal in a café. But I don't think that the can stand of not buying drinks or meals during the games. Because having a meal while watching the games make it more fun. But if they can stand not to drink or eat, it's okay for me. The cafe will always be opened for every football fan who loves to watch football matches with friends. But if there are some people who do not want to watch football matches, it is okay for them to enjoy the meal and drinks. So the cafe would not be only for football fans. It also welcomes the people who just want to chit chat with their friends while having a meal. Hopefully they will start loving football after spending time in my cafe..

    3. I don’t really agree with your idea about watching the football match without have to pay or what so ever. I mean if your café are full with some dude just sit down there without ordering some drink then from where you get your income? My advice is you give special price to the fan if their favourite are playing. Like 20% or 30% I’m sure that every match day your café will full with some crazy fans. I really like your idea because I’m a big fans of football too, Manchester united especially. Many café of Manchester united in Jakarta has already been closed down due the lack of consumer. I guess them fixing a high price when Manchester united day. Like they have to pay at least 75k rupiah just for the entrance and they have to paid more because the tables have the minimum order. 20. My favorite thing to do is sleeping, so if I own a cafe my theme would be a bedroom cafe. When I was a child my grandma used to tell me a bedtime stories, so there would be a child bedroom theme with a lot of our childhood bedtime stories character in it and it also remind me about the happiest time that I have spent with her. My grandma's favorite bedtime stories is about the 25 prophet and maybe that stories would be a special section in the child theme. Another stories that I would consider is Disney character and stories and that would make the perfect theme for my cafe. I'll also make the normal or grown up bedroom theme where we can just relaxed and the environment would be homey too. The perfect location would be near Palagan and maybe in Kaliurang but below km 7 near UGM.

  21. If I own a café in Yogyakarta I will decorate my café with my child hood dream. I will make a café with starwars theme on it. I always admire starwars since I watch it the first episode. For me starwars is more than a saga of film, starwars for me is a picture of this galaxy in a thousand years ahead. I will make a café that really describe the feeling when you watch the film. Like decorating the place to become a space ship with every detail in it and change all the ornament of the house like in sci-fi film. Then all the waiters will use the costume of the starwars figure with all the details like laser gun, mask, lightsaber, etc. for the entertainment I will add some star wars game like lightsaber or tatoinee podrace. Last but not least I will add some action figure like darth vader, r2-d2, 3-cpo, emperor sidious, stroomtrooper and many famous figures. I know for you who don’t really love this film you will wonder what I’m talking about, but trust me you have to watch this film. The only word to describe this film: Magnificent

I have to admit that I reached the year 2013 without ever having watched a Star Wars movie all the way through. Many of my high school mates were crazy about it when the first one came out. But for some strange reason I have never sat down and watched one.

  22. Since my most favorite movie in the world is Alice in Wonderland by Disney, I would like to make an Alice in Wonderland themed cafe. My cafe would be a garden cafe, with lots of colorful mushrooms and weird plants all around to make it seem more like you're in the Alice in Wonderland world. The parking lot would be separated by heart-shaped fences, and there will be a pathway made of different color tiles to the entrance. The entrance door would be so big so you will feel like you're Alice when she's in the mini mode. The shape of the building will be asymmetrical like the duchess's house with pink and purple paints, the interior of the cafe will be made so you'll feel at home, with wooden floor and colorful tables and chairs, there will also be a reading corner for lounging around, and of course, free wi-fi. I would make the menu of the foods and drinks variated, with funny and weird names, there would be heavy meals, and also snacks, the drinks will be served in some kind of cookie jar or tea cups like in the mad hatter scene. There will also be seats outside, with a picnic kind of theme, surrounded by all the quirky and funny things that you would find in the Alice in Wonderland movie. This is my dream cafe, a themed and weird, quirky cafe that I hope will be easily remembered by people and catch lots of attentions.

Well, I have some ideas that maybe it is quite different from the other café. Since I love vintage and odd things, maybe I will put up many furniture made of wood, it should be black or brown. Also, I want to put up glass as my ceiling in another side of the café, so we could see the sky from inside. Furthermore, I have to set up the lightning in my café, it should be yellow and dim. I am going to display many analog cameras and photos in an antique frame. You might think that my ideas are gloomy things like that. But I really enjoy if I entered a café that have a romantic feelings on it. Also, I will lead this café into premium café, which is you can guess that the waiters, service, place and foods are perfect.

But there is a question I used to ask to you, that you think if there is airplane simulator your café will worth with it cost? 25. I haven’t been in many café’s in Jogjakarta yet but the cafes that I've been to mostly has the same theme (warming and comfortable which is good) but wouldn't it be great if cafes has some kind of uniqueness to it?
If I owned a café I would make it as comfortable as possible or maybe so comfortable that no one would leave, but of course they have to pay extra for that. I would focus on the design a lot more than I would focus on the menu because a café for me is more of a place to relax rather than a place where we enjoy the food (that’s more of a restaurant I think).
I really love classic Italian designs because they are just simply beautiful and good to look at and I would also provide a mini library around the corner. Board games would be cool too but located further away from the mini library because the atmosphere wouldn't match (silent and noisy).
Other than that, the most important is excellent service.

  26. Owned cafe in Yogyakarta? This is a very interesting article! Well, actually I am interested with that idea. That idea once pooped up in my mind.
If I have the opportunity to open café in Yogya, the first thing I’ll do is to search the greatest design interior. I want the cute elegant and comfort café. It can catch people’s eyes, so people will interest to visit my café. Haha, I ever thought about an ice cream café. I wonder the design for the building is looks like ice cream. With pink, chocolate, and white color for the top of the roof; the waiters also wear a cute uniform and there are lots of uniform and the accessories; and the interior is super cute.

Of course, the taste must be delicious so people will be addicted to come. I will search for the greatest chef maybe from abroad, so they have the international taste. Well, actually Indonesian chef also can make the taste great, but maybe if I have to work with Indonesian chef, I want the really great one.

I will think about how to make my chef and my receipt are not going to be sabotage by anybody else.
The place must be comfortable, there will be the jazz songs, but still elegant.
I will sell the cutest and the delicious cake also the delicious drink. Free wi-fi is very important. The place should be not too small as well.

  27. I’ve been stayed in Jogja since my very first day of high school. Jogja is a town that most of the locals is student which is become an advantages for business that target student and teenager as their customer. Cafe is one of business that harvesting money through student’s wallet. Most of student spend their time and money at cafe to do their assignment and hanging out. Due my addiction at my passion at food and beverages business, this article become more interesting especially by reading all comment above. If i own a cafe i’d like to make a Mexican Food Van Cafe. This idea come from a TV show called Eat Street. By putting a humongous Van as the Kitchen and spread chairs and tables with large foldable umbrella and of course to attract more students i’ll give free Wifi around the cafe. For the food i pick Mexican because most of the food are served in large portion and it’s really easy to prepare. For example when we serve 1 portion of nachos (for about 2-3 person per portion) all we have to do is mix the nachos with Salsa Sauce, Diced pan fried chicken or beef, cheese sauce and Sliced Jalapeno.

  28. If I owned a cafe in Jogja, I will make it different from the others. Such as serving middle eastern foods (as I haven’t found any Indian food, which I love so much) or making it as a library cafe which has many varieties of good books which the customers can borrow and read at the cafe and serve authentic good robusta coffee and not just kopi ABCs (I found it suitable for me to read books and sip some good coffee). And ofcourse I will provide the customers with free wifi, so they can post comments on some blogs while sipping hot coffee. Or I will buy a used truck or van and make it as mexican (or other type of food. I choose mexican because I haven’t found cafes selling mexican burritos and tacos) foodtruck and will be selling the mexican snacks in Jalan Kaliurang, or somewhere else suitable.

  29. If I owned a café in Yogyakarta, I would like to use the theme of beach. As Jogja is a warm city, I want my customers to feel the breeze of the wind, enjoy the sun. The bright sun people usually avoid could be changed into a paradise; of course I do have to be picky on choosing the place for my café. I also want my café to be a place for gathering of young people and so it won’t offer expensive food and drinks. Despite that, the menu offered would still be satisfying and favourable by most people. The café would also offer a station where you can enjoy series of entertainment, from billiard; bowling; and also a little golf putting station. There would also be a lounge where you could watch football or movies together with your mates with a big screen. However, my café would not allow anyone to smoke inside, smoking is permitted at the outdoor lounge, where you could spend your time chatting with your mates or surfing the internet using the free wifi with quick connection offered by my café.

Because Yogyakarta is known as Student’s city, I would like to offer students a great place for them to study, reading, or just having a good time with their friends and family. Since I really like library and vintage concept, I would decorate the room with many kinds of book collections and vintage stuffs. There would be a lot of sofa and pillows so the customer could feel relax after a long day of work or school. The cafe’s would be dominated by brown or wood color and also white. I would play slow songs and held a gig at Friday or Saturday night. This cafe would have a free wi-fi connection too. For another unique way to attract customers, I would use a reward system for every purchase. When they had enough poins, they would be able to take one of the book home. Don’t worry about the price. The food prices in this cafe would be affordable for students or young people. I haven't thought about the menus. Maybe something like pancake and pasta will be good.

  31. Owning a café is one of the to-do lists in my life plan. I’ve always visualized having a five star restaurant where posh people will have the culinary experience of their lifetime. But obviously that can’t be applied here. Before opening a business, we should know what are the current trends and demands. In Jogja, I’ve examined that we need a cozy place to do our tasks with our friends. Fast Internet connection is also a major reason of choosing a café. I will serve top quality food and beverages but with reasonable price so that customers could easily buy more food. This is quite hard because usually it’s hard to make good food and charging low prices. As for the interior design, I want it to be simple but somehow elegant. Black painted walls with white furnitures, and wooden floors. I want people to dress up, and feel excited to come visit because they wan’t to update in social medias about my cool café. I want my café to be so comfortable, that they will always come back and tell their friends about it. If it’s affordable, comfy, good lighting, and fast Internet, hopefully we will attract people to my hip café.

There's no such thing like price or minimal price. The customers buy drinks or snacks then they can pay as they wish. Every price is ok, whether it's below or above the normal price. Why I use this method? Because first, Yogyakarta have many student and most of them are not from Jogja, so they have limited cash. Second, because I want to improve Indonesian people's honesty and teach them how to appreciate people properly. In Islam, this method is called "Ikhlas". There is a cafe using this method too in I don't know whether it's Spain or Austria, but this cafe's profit per year can be categorized as a success cafe.
For the facility in the cafe, I would like to show different entertainments such as jazz band, acoustic band, local dance, folk music, etc. For the food and beverages, I will provide all drinks from the world and there is some local snacks too such as klepon, lemper, putu ayu, etc. Last but not least, I would provide Free Wi-Fi with the speed of 22.7 Mbps. I will build this cafe if I'm already a rich person.

Maybe on the first week, my café will have a deficit rather than a surplus. How to handle that? I will give them a very delicious foods and drinks. I will also give them fascinating facilities such as Wi-Fi and game consoles. If they still have conscience, I believe they will pay as much as the amount of satisfactions they get in my café. How if they still have conscience, want to pay more, but they don’t have much money? Just pay his best. It’s ok if it’s below the normal price in the market. Because I believe there are many people who will pay more from the normal price, usually the upper middle class. The main basis of my café is trust, sir. It’s the best things I can provide in my café.

  33. If I owned a cafe in jogja, I’ll make it sci-fi cafe, the design will combine the mass effect series (it’s a great sci-fi game) and star wars (of course you’ve already know about this film). The main building will be designed like AT-AT (All Terrain Armoured Transport) walker, as depicted in the Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back. And the second building (behind the main building) will be the bookstore, so the customer can buy various type of snacks, foods, coffee, drinks and ice cream in the main building, and they can go shopping in the second building. In the menu we’ll serve not only Indonesian foods but also European foods. The price for a cup of coffee around Rp.12.000 - Rp.30.000 and for the main course the price around Rp. 18.000 – Rp.45.000.
For the marketing process, I’ll Offer a loyalty program to retain customer and build strong relationship with them, so my cafe will be famous around the teenagers and sci-fi lovers. Oh yeah one more thing, the name of the cafe is “The Citadel”

  34. Actually, when i was reading this article and its comments, two themes of cafe showed up in my mind. It is about “Student-based Cafe” and “Javanese Culture Cafe”. But I think, i would prefer the first one, which is the “Student-based Cafe”.
What do I mean by “Student-based Cafe” is all of the resources that I will use is from students and for students. First, to fit the market’s target, which is students and college students, I have to set the prices as low as possible, right? So to set the prices as low as possible, I have to make the expenditure as low as possible too.
To minimize the expenditure, I will employ students all over Jogja (with selections, of course) and set them as a part-time workers. As it is a part-time job, the salary expenses that I have to spend is not as much as if i employ them as a full-time workers.
Another main point of my cafe, I will open the business to all students in Jogja. Like, they can supply the foods, drinks, and ideas too. Foods and drinks can help the monetary of students in Jogja, and also my cafe. If the supplier can’t deliver them to my cafe, I will provide them with take-away-service from their house. And about ideas, I will pay them if their ideas is cool and can be used to improve my cafe. As youngster’s ideas is more creative and needed for my cafe (which targets students).
Beside these ideas of how to make it as cheap as I can, I will make it a comfortable place. Sofas, AC, Wi-Fi, Cards, and other things will be provided. And of course, I will maintain the quality by myself and my maintaining team. As we know that maintaining things and keep it in a good shape is something really difficult, I will handle it by myself.
So, this is my ideas, low cost, student based, but 5-stars quality cafe.

  35. I've planned to make a cafe. I will build my café, first, just only for single person and broken-hearted; second, the café will allow people to make their own coffee. Why I planned to make a cafe like this? In my experience, some single people didn't like to see couples on cafe they visited. They feel like intimidated. And then, for the brokenhearted guy. They need to be distracted from their problem, and I want to make him or her happy when they visited my cafe. My goal is make the people whom have problem in love happier than before, by giving them a place to drink coffee and maybe play games with their friend.
For the coffee-lover, this café will allow them to experiment with their drink. I will place some public coffee maker and many variants of coffee bean. Some people always want to try a variation of coffee. For instance, I always want to mix some coffee bean and spices. Every coffee variant has different tastes and effects, and I want to find another new taste.
This café will be facilitated with some modern console games and Wi-Fi. They will able to use this facility for free, as they want. The architecture of this café will use plain woods and tropical architectural. I will also provide matchmaker service, so for the people whom think they are unhappy with their status, they will helped here.

Sometimes, they do their assignment in café that’s why I want to make study café. So study café looks like library (no chatting haha) with study furniture: table lamp, study table, etc. I would give special facilities in study café like free Wi-Fi Internet services, books, etc. That gives you enough peace and quiet to study in the café.
So what the different with another café? Study café would be half-Raw vegan, half-vegetarian. Definite emphasis on healthy food items: whole wheat bread, red rice, etc. We would have tasty soups made available, with both crusty bread made on the premises, and wheat and gluten free alternatives for sure. And healthy juices and organic like berries, bananas, citrus fruits, etc. For desserts, would be pre-portioned in small to medium sizes. And all water would be flavored with lemon or lime.
The price range will be 35.000 – 75.000 Rupiahs, The price is little bit expensive but still affordable if anyone compromise with the facility and comfortable.

  39. I think if I can open a café in Yogyakarta, I would like to open a dog café. Why dog café? Well, I will simply answer that there isn’t any dog café in Yogyakarta. Even in Indonesia, it’s still rare. Many people living in Yogyakarta don’t like dogs that much and most of them are scared. This café will be made for those people who want to hang out with their dog and let them socialize with other dogs. But people can still visit this café without dogs. They can just hang out in the café and play with the available dogs. Okay, I’ll start to share you guys my idea about dog café.
Firstly I will need a large space of building to make the dogs and people in café more comfortable Then I will arrange the space between one table and another so that the dogs can walk between them. And I won’t use sofas or fabrics seats. I prefer to have my café with some woods furniture and some cute background. And for the menus, I will serve the best quality coffees, desserts, and some light snacks with affordable prices. I won’t serve menus for those who want to have their lunch or dinner in my café because the dogs may disturb and steal your food. But I promise if I own a dog café, the dogs will be “well-trained”. And I already have some ideas which dog breed I want to have in café. I will put some breeds those are known as friendly dogs, such as Golden Retriever, Pug, Pomeranian, Chihuahua, etc. And lastly, free wi-fi with high-speed connection will also avaialble in the dog cafe.

The family faces an even bigger adjustment when they discover that their new dog, Stan, can talk. Only Avery, Chloe, and Tyler know he can talk. Unbeknownst to the family, Stan also has a blog, which he uses to discuss the happenings in the Jennings-James household. The children learn of Stan's talking ability in the first episode and agree to keep it a secret from their parents, fearing that if the world finds out that Stan can talk, he will be taken away and experimented on. In "Stan Talks to Gran" Bennett's mother Grandma James learns Stan can talk, but promises the kids to keep it a secret."

My cafe won't sell any food, snack and beverages only. The café provides free wifi which is incredibly fast. The building will have a size like feb's class U303, the lights are feeble. With a minimalist building design, it will give a touch of the modern cafe structure it will attract customers. As a cafe it would have a menu that has coffee in many varieties Caramel latte, cappuccino, espresso and other kinds of coffee served both iced or hot for some. Blending small ideas to create a mixture of coffee and alcohol wouldn't hurt. dim lights and reflective balls at some point will give a decorative touch of classic cafe as well. This 24 hour cafe will serve not also beverages, but also food from snacks to meals with prices between Rp 15.000 to Rp 100.000. This Cafe will be named EPIC cafe because it will be epic and because it abbreviates to Enrico's Perfect Incomparable Cafe.

  42. If I owned a café in Jogja, I would like to make a 24 hours café that suits and supports students to study, because Jogja is known as “the city of education”. Especially for college students, they often had group assignments to be done and sometimes finding their houses is hard, so sometimes café is the best place for them to finish their assignments, because it is easier to find. I would give my café fast internet connection, wide tables, sofas, proper lights, air conditioners, little library, and nutritious foods and beverages. Maybe I would provide some wide tables for big groups and some small tables for couples. And then, I think I am going to have some “soundproof boxes” to separate several big tables, so there will be no such a big noise and it will not bothering another groups, because while we are working in group, sometimes we’d like to laugh or talk too loud. Also, I would like to give my café a printing service, so they can easily print their assignments. For the foods and beverages, I would provide high nutrition an organic dishes with the range of price between Rp5000,00 until Rp50000,00, because usually students doesn’t really have much money but they need enough nutrition to think and study. I absolutely avoid instant dishes on my menu such as instant noodle because it is harming student’s health. So, I wish I could make this kind of café: a cozy, comfort, and peaceful place to study.

When they want to study, meeting with their friends or just spending times they will look for cafe that offers delicious food, refreshing beverages and free internet with the low-cost. But does it satisfy the consumer? The business people need to answer it.
For me, if I am one of the businessman who wants to open a new cafe, I will firstly observe from both perspective: consumer and seller. We cannot just offer such things that consumer would like and get the profit from it. Business is not always about profit, moreover short-term profit but the most important is its sustainability. The reflective question is, how to tie the consumer to our business?
I think it is all about how the cafe services give satisfaction to its customer. From the little thing such as greeting to the consumer until the most important part of cafe business: foods and beverages, it is need to be well-prepared. When all that factors are well-prepared, than that cafe business will sustain for such a long time. And that is my goal when I have a cafe business. When the consumer satisfy with the goods and services, they will not longer think about price. How much price you set, they will buy it. That is the hardest part of starting new business and here in Faculty of Economics and Business UGM I really want to learn the knowledge to analyze the business and make it a seller market.

  44. If I owned a café in Jogjakarta I want it to be in Jalan Kaliurang or around UGM, my main market target is students as this city is the city of students. The concept for this café will be like a home where the consumers could feel like they were in their home so that they can do their task comfortably in my café. For the design I will choose a simple design but not making the students remembers their class but more like a place where they can be inspired. Furniture, I will use many many of sofas and also a big table so that they can place their books or laptops easily. I choose to use many sofas and big table is because what I see in nowadays café they’re only giving a small rounded table for the consumer and a very few sofas.

Now for the menu, I would really like to have a café where the consumers can pick their own coffee beans either the want a local beans or imported beans. Well actually they can make their own beverages I really want a café where the consumers can be as free as they want about their menu especially in beverages as mostly students that want to do their task in café are only purchasing beverages.

  46. If I owned a café in Jogja, it will be a tree-house café. And maybe it located around UGM or another university in Jogja to attract more customers. Why a tree-house café? As a student, mostly I do the assignment outside the house to find a comfortable atmosphere. And when I get there, I realize that there also so many students that also come to that place and do their individual or group assignment. So I think it will be a great idea to make a café that comfortable for students to do their assignments. Now I’d like to explain about what it will look like. First, the building itself will look like a real tree. And then I will give many sofas to give the maximum comfort to costumer, air-conditioned room, wooden floor and wooden wall. For foods and drinks, I will make simple and also cheap snacks. Because when we do our assignments, most of us just order a simple snack and drinks. With this kind of concept, I hope the students will feel more comfortable to do their assignments.

  47. Starting my own cafe? Well, that’s actually one of my dream that I would like to achieve in the future. I think by starting a cafe is a good idea, but we have to be smart and careful to choose the places, the concept and of course the target market. From the interior side, I do really want to have a cafe which have a concept like Starbucks which I think it’s a very comfortable place to do my assignment or having a chit-chat with my friends. But why Starbucks? Well, it’s because I often saw many students do their assignment with their friends in that places but on the other side, I saw many people who just enjoyed talking to each other with their friends for a long time or let’s say that it lasted for more than 2 hours which means that people already comfortable to stay in that place. Moreover, in order to avoid the consumer boredom, I’ll put a TV or free wifi services for the customers so they’ll not be bored while they’re visiting at my cafe. For the menu, of course since it’s a cafe I’ll sell a coffee or tea but i’d like to sell some foods too. So when the customers are hungry they can buy it from my cafe too. For the location, I really want to open my cafe in the city centre or at least in an area that is easy to reach which is near from the city centre. But I also think since Yogyakarta is the city of students, I’ve been thinking to open my cafe near to some university in Yogya maybe near UGM, UNY, or UII. Well, I hope someday I’ll be able to open my own cafe and become one of Starbucks biggest competitor. Hehe

  48. Well, this is an interesting topic. Everyone knows that Jogja is a city of students. So if I owned a cafe in Jogja, I would make it a comfortable and enjoyable place that can be used by students to learn, make assignment, and have discussion with group and many more. Then it is not only for students but also can used by the people because some people need a cozy or comfortable place to do our tasks with friends, and also hangout comfortably. For the cafe lovers, this place will be equipped with fast internet connection and maybe there will be some computers for customer, a comfortable sofa, a recommended menu whose price is not expensive for students. I think that I will build my cafe with such a unique architecture that there is a small library for customers, then if you want to read the books in a small library and it is free of charge. For the interior design it will be a blend of learning and place to hangout with friends. And do not forget there will be a large parking area and facilities which are very satisfying and interesting for the visitors.

    1. yes I am agree to Anis' statement which says that Jogja is the place for students. So if we want to open up a cafe, we would better open it with a cozy theme, comfy place, near to the students' living places, and also high speed wifi provided. Once you able to set up a cafe with the themes I mentioned before, then it would be easier to attract students to come to our place to dine in or just chilling while writing posts on some blogs. And you don't have to be worry if you can't serve top notch meals or beverages like others do, because once you have high speed internet access installed on your cafe, you have comfy sofas with air conditioning installed in the cafe, then all of them are already a great attraction to the students who want to surf the internet, chilling with their friends, or doing their homework.

  49. If I owned a cafe in Jogja, I will make a book cafe. It’s because I like reading a lot and it is hard for me to find a comfort place to read in public area. Also I concern about the Indonesian people that don’t like to read much although reading is very important. My cafe will have a mixed between Indonesian and western interior and have many bookshelf to provide books. Here they can enjoy their time reading books and eat some delicious food. For the menu, I want to provide a wide range of food so the customer would eager to always come back and try different menus. I will also keep the price low so everyone can enjoy their experience without any concern to lose a lot of money. And, they can also rent a book if they have a member card. The purpose of member card is to preventing anybody to steal the book and also there will be discount for the food if you become a member. The location f my cafe will be in the center of Jogja so it is easy to access by a lot of people.

  50. I would make a cafe of a coffee shop, or you might said it a coffee house with the great selection food and beverages of course. And with the black oak wooden floor, black sealing, comfortable seat, great atmosphere, giant screen, a great internet connection, great promo, and other things that a great cafe would have. I am so inspired when i was reading short story by my favourite author, Dewi Lestari. The short-story entitled "Filosofi Kopi" or in english in coffee philosophy. It gives a card for every cup of coffee that the customer would order, in the card, would be like a definition of the drink from the barista's eyes. And it also would describe the type of person that would order that cup of coffee. And also i would offer a great selection of books, not just novels, but also the kinds of books that would be needed in the college, because, those books are thick and heavy, and i wouldn't want to bring it to the cafe, so instead, I would want to find it in the cafe. And i have this idea, since my brother in taking a major in psychology, I would make a "Galau Room". A room where you can consult with a psychologist for free. Thank you.

  51. I’ve had some ideas about owning a café in jogja for some business plan in the future. Because I hadn’t known what exactly I wanted to be in the future when I was applying in FEB UGM a year ago, all I was thinking about is just: when I become an entrepreneur in the future, I want to make a high impact on society. So I decided to do some social entrepreneurial business in the future, soon. I want to make a café not just a place where we can eat and drink. I want it to be eco friendly and I want to distribute a part of its profit to financially help Indonesian kids’ education. I want the coffee made in Indonesia because that will help Indonesian coffee land worker/cultivator increase their salary. By increasing their salary, it automatically will help them get a better standard of living for their family.

  52. I have never found a scientific cafés in Yogyakarta. If I was able to make a cafe, I would make a cafe with a scientific theme. Exterior design will look futuristic minimalist with paint colors such as white and orange stripes. There are many drawer filled with chemicals (certainly it isn’t truly chemicals), glass beaker, test tubes, Bunsen heater, and will really look like a lab. Cool room condition with an impressive futuristic chair will add comfort. I will make this cafe with a minimalist area but can include all facilities; cafes and lounges, science booth, toilet, and online game center. 2-floor building may be enough cover all facilities. For food and drink, I will minimize the price because it is intended for young people. Cup - shaped glass beaker, Erlenmeyer flask, volumetric flask, even a test tube . Food will be named in accordance with the scientific name. Example French fries is named Frixum Solanum tuberosum , and so did the name of the drink . For example green tea milkshake named Camelia sinensis milkshake and so on. The naming of course totally scientific and it based on basic ingredients of foods or beverages. It looks weird but I do not think there is a café with a theme like this.

  53. If you are talking about cafe, it must be a Maid Cafe!

Maid Cafe is really popular in Japan, and having this kind of thing in Indonesia maybe not that bad! In the Maid Cafe, you will be served by a lot of cute girls, wearing a maid clothes. It is very refreshing to have this kind of cafe. I have been to the Maid Cafe in the Akihabara district called Mai-dreamin. In that place you are asked to pay for about 3.000 Yen only for the entry fee, and another 2.000 Yen for a plate of Fried Rice (with love sauce on top of it), and one photo shoot with the maid you want!

I have been thinking to open this kind of café in Yogyakarta with my sister. Because this kind of café not only attract male people to come, but the cheerful of the maid can make a good atmosphere for hanging out too. In Mai-dreamin, there is a lot of woman that come just to getting relaxed, and getting in the mood.

  54. Glad you make this kind of article, Sir! I have a dream to open a cafe someday. The cafe will have a nice and comfortable atmosphere where people can relax and enjoy the cafe as they are in their own house. The cafe will be like a small house with many windows so the light in the cafe will be from the sun. Besides it will be more economist, it also more eco-friendly. Then it will use wooden floor and the wall from bricks that painted with white colour. In the wall there will be hanging many painting from many amateur painter that can be purchase there. Because I like tea, the cafe will provide many variants of tea whether it is black tea or white tea. Not only tea, we also provide coffee but I want to make it do not have high caffeine. The cafe will open 24 hours, so people can have breakfast and do assignment there.

  55. What if I Owned cafe in Yogya? It must be in central of Yogya because If you open any business in the central of the city, people will directly notice it and you will get a lot of customer. People will see your cafe because you have a great architecture, different from other cafe and seems cozy. My cafe will open 24 hours so people can come to my cafe anytime they want. The market is for teenager especially college student because Jogja well known as ,“Kota Pelajar”, city of students. I would like to serve wester food like beef wellington or steak with cheap price so it is affordable for student. And all the beverage are available, like lattes , tea, or whatever customer want.

The design must be minimalist and modern , also comfortable for college student to meet up with friends or doing some assignment. There are two room in this cafe which is outdoor and indoor. My cafe also have internet connection such as Wi-fi. I also want to have live acoustic music on weekend. This place also provide sweet seventeen birthday party for teenager or other party. Hopelly I can realize this cafe in the future.

  56. I would really like to open my own café someday. My café will have the concept of countryside European home. The walls will be decorated with wooden fences, vines and I will put a little bucket of flowers in each window. To really capture the ‘home’ feeling, there will be a fireplace where the customers can roast their marshmallow over the leaping flame. In the corner of the room there will be a small garden with imitation grass, little garden flowers, a mini well and also little gnome statues. As for the menu, it will be a mix of European and Indonesian food and beverages so that the customers will have many options to choose from. There will also be a live music performance on the weekends.
The café will be set as comfortable as possible for the customers. I’m not going to open my café in the middle of the city because it will be too crowded. I will open it around the area of universities or high schools, so that students can come to study or do their assignments comfortably.

  57. Wow this article is very interesting hahah since I was in junior high school, I have a dream to own my own cafe. I love coffee, I love cookies, I love all kinds of foods and beverages that provided at cafe. My favorite is Cafe Latte. Cafe Latte is a coffee which is combined with milk (latte). I love spending my time in cafe. Starbucks has a good standard in cafe management. Starbucks has fast internet connection, good quality of coffee, tasty cakes and cookies, comfortable place, and also serves the good music. So we can feel relax if we decided to spend our time there. Cafes should have the uniqe thing that another cafe does not have. For example, I know the good cafe in Bandung called "Cocorico" why I say cocorio is unique? Because when you enter the cafe, you will amazed by the view around the cafe. It is placed on the peak, it is very cold if you come to dinner. But the view is really really awesome. That is a very romantic cafe. It also provides live music every Saturday night. The grand piano looks very awesome, and also all of the music stuffs. The taste of its foods also delicious, the price not really expensive. I love to go to that cafe. I hope I will back soon to Jakarta, so, I can go to Cocorico with my friends. I love cafe really much. I would rather spending my time all night long in cafe than spending my time in bar. Because I do not interested in alcohol

  58. Hello, My name is Heza Ramanda, and I would like to give my opinion regarding to this topic.
Say, if I own a café in Jogja, I guess I would like to make that coffee as comfy as possible. A fluffy seat, A round wooden table, And a Wi-Fi area is a must in this café I own. And I think a smooth, pleasant jazzy songs would do the trick. And for Jogja is well-known for its originality, I would make my café to look as retro as possible. And also, a well dressed, and good looking waiter and waitress should be available in my café, All of that to build a calm, relaxing atmosphere in my café. A billiard table will be nice, and a spacious parking spot will do the trick. I don’t want to open my café in a crowded place also, but instead, I prefer to open my café on a hill, so that the customers can see Jogja from the upside, and by doing so, building a romantic atmosphere in my café. And I guess that’s all for my ideas for my own café. Thank you.

  59. If I own a café in Yogyakarta I would open a student friendly café. I got this idea as I think the demand for tuition in Jogjakarta, being a university town, is pretty high. However instead of opening a tuition centre or just a café itself, I think it would be a good idea to amalgamate the two concepts together. The café would provide a tutor so that student or a small group of student can make an arrangement with the tutors for their tuition timing. As such these tutors can conduct their tuition in the café and at the same time order some food or beverages. Also, students who are not having tuition can also use the café facilities such as photocopy machines, books or the computer station. I feel that this has increased the function of the café for being not just as a f&b business but as an agent to help tutors get jobs and tutees who are looking for extra help in their school work. In conclusion I think merging tuition centre and café in Jogjakarta together is quite a feasible idea.

  60. If I owned a café that’d be a death café. I think that talking about death is a great way to spend some time. At my Death Cafe people will gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death. The objective of Death Cafe is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'.
I want my venue of the Death café to be tent at the park. And I do not want my café to have time-scales so it will be up to me when to open the café. And as for the menu, it will be cakes and beverages. There would be alcohol, non-alcohol, coffee, and non-coffee. And it’ll probably better to serve shisha.
And I’d like to add the future reading service, both by tarot (Taromancy) and crystal ball (Crystalomancy) and tea leaves (Tasseomancy). Tasseomancy is probably my preference because Hermione Granger hates it so much and it’s more classy. I think.

  61. I always want to build my own café. And my dream café is to make a beach view café. So I’m going to build it in a beach in Yogyakarta. The reason why I want to make a beach view café is because I love to hear the sound of waves, I love to see the sea when it’s calm, and playing with the white sands.
Just like the usual café, I’m going to provide them with a good connection of Internet, so for everyone who wants to do their homework or just browsing about stuffs, could be relax and enjoy the time on the beach.
A café is not complete without coffee. I’m going to hire an expert barrister to make a delightful coffee. Coffee that made from the coffee beans would taste better than the instant coffee.
If the waves are too quiet, or you don’t like the sound of the waves, you don’t have to be worried. I will give you enjoyable life music. You can request any song that you like or if you can play instruments, I will be honored if you play one for my café.
So, my café would provide you a good coffee, good music, and of course a wonderful view.

  62. I would go in a similar direction as some of the comments above: Creating a concept focusing on students. As a matter of fact, reliable and fast internet is still a scarcity in Jogja. Therefore I also perceive Wi-Fi or internet in general, especially for this target group, as one of the most important aspects to consider. People should be able to do whatever they want to without having trouble with the internet connection. I think even only this aspect could already create a competitive advantage at this point of time. I would also make sure that there is a printer and scanner available. Perhaps the general concept could be a mix between coffee place-lounge and print-internet-shop. For the location and atmosphere as well as for the menu and drinks I am not entirely sure what I would do. Maybe I would try to focus on international students and provide some popular western dishes and drinks everyone has a craving for.

  63. If I own a café in Yogyakarta, I’ll implement what D’ Cost (popular cheap but not-so-cheap restaurant in Jakarta) does: five-star quality, foot peddler price (what it literally means is great quality with low price). As you could see, even though many people say that there’s a lot of cheap restaurant in Yogyakarta, but it is pretty rare for me to see the same at its café. I want to try to decorate my café with classic feels (maybe with Saturday night’s jazz), and serve my food and beverages with slightly-more-than-average price. The food quality doesn’t need to be that good, but at least it is the same as restaurant around. What I will sell is the atmosphere. I think the cost of maintaining the atmosphere isn’t as much as maintaining the quality of foods, and I believe there will be a lot of customer; mind that it is still rare for Yogyakarta to have such café around.

  64. Maybe there are already peoples who have this idea on this topic, but I also like to open a maid café in Yogyakarta. Maid café is a café which is served by beautiful maids, and what we’re actually buying is not the food, but for the services they provide. We cannot ignore that there are significant amount of young peoples in Yogyakarta. From that amount of young peoples, one cannot ignore that some of them are also a fan of Japanese culture. From a group that I joined in Facebook, there are at least 600 of them around Yogyakarta. They are very potential to be the regular customer in my café. What we need to be careful is the customer behavior. We need to create rules so our café is not mistaken as host club, and our employees could also work without any trouble.

In Jakarta, specifically around Bina Nusantara University, there is a maid café that has been opening, and it is proven successful. It is also not a bad idea if we could be a pioneer in Indonesia at opening daily butler café too, not just event-only one.

    1. Hallo, Adhi.
I also have a dream to open a maid café! It’s nice to know that you have the same idea.
Adhi, would you like to tell me more about your future maid café? What will make your maid café different than any other maid café?
What kind of services that your café offer? Would you like to provide photo booth session for the customers? I believe that many of your customers will be anxious to take a picture with those beautiful maids.
How about game session with the maids? Mellissa asked me about the game session: about the game examples. I have a very few idea about it. Do you mind to share anything about it?
I think the menu of a café is also a prominent thing. Do you have any specialty of coffee in your café? Maybe there is something special about the latte drinks or the meal in your maid café that you have in mind.
      Thank you, Adhi. Good luck!

  65. If I owned a café in Yogya I would choose only one specific target group, like for example university students. I would create a hangout place where different types of coffee are served and also some snacks like croissants, sandwiches with “real” bread and fruit salads. I’d install comfortable sofas and chairs including tables and “sitting corners” where you can just relax on a carpet with some nice pillows around you. Moreover I’d take care of a stable and fast internet connection. Although this café shouldn’t be a typical internet café, Wi-Fi is self-evident nowadays. Moreover, as students are the main target group, they should also be able to use the cafe for studying purposes. So I would create a separate area without music and some desks where students can do their assignments and drink a coffee while studying. Regarding the organization of the business, I would hire a few students instead of regular workers. So this way some students had the possibility to earn some money and the café would serve its original purpose: a café from students for students.

  66. I think that I want to make the most sensational café concept , because I think that Sensational cafe concepts have been behind the world's most dynamic and design-savy coffee houses. These wonderfully-designed spaces are not only meant to be communal and interactive, but also serve as relaxing getaways for coffee lovers everywhere.

These internationally renowned spaces are not only known for their signature brew of coffee, but also for their distinctive design. From storage container pop-up coffee shops to soaring treehouse cafes, these cozy conversation spots are neighborhood favorites that stand out against the uniformity of neighbouring big franchise coffee houses.

One-of-a-kind coffee house concepts including pet store cafes, cycling coffee shops and even fashion shop cafe hybrids are putting emphasis on individuals' desire for unique, small-run businesses that have presence and character. Coffee lovers are always looking for the city's best kept secret and these personality-enriched spaces are undeniable hotspots.

  67. Everyone wants new concept for his or her “Imaginary” café, of course. But I think I will prioritize comfort. We don’t really have to paint the walls with rainbow color to attract people’s attention. What’s the use of being unique in colors when you can’t provide comfort to your consumers?

For me, comfort is being at a place that feels like home. It doesn’t mean that it has to be decorated with home furnishings; I want to make my café a place where anyone can do what they want, so that they can stay longer and feel comfortable. And cooperation with employees is needed too, in order to make the "home" atmosphere stronger.

I don’t really care about how much profit this café will get (you can think that I’m not going to be successful running a café business, but I have my own point of view, though), as long as everyone feel relaxed because I personally think that is why people make cafés.

  68. If I owned a cafe in Yogyakarta I would make it different from the others. This may sound like a strange idea but it doesn't matter I think. I would make my cafe only for Manchester United fans, because I think the majority in Yogyakarta are Man.United fans. I would like all the stuff and furnitures in the cafe to be orignally from Old Trafford, may be I could also make tables and chairs that has the logo of Man.United. I'm also going to sell some merchandise that are from Manchester in the cafe. I also want to give special price when theres a Manchester match on the weekends. Maybe I'll give about half the price as usual days. The cafe will also provide common stuff such as free WIFI, smoking and no smoking areas. There would also be a corner for kids so it won't only be for adults, and don't forget about the food and drinks, there going to satisfy customers because there one of a kind. Well, I think thats all. In my opinion this a liitle bit crazy for an idea and I also think its a big risk if you want to own a cafe, but who knows what could happen.

  69. This article is really interesting for me because I always wanted to open my own cafe. For me the best cafe or the ideal cafe is a cafe that is affordable and offers a lot of facilities. The “Legend Coffee” in Kotabaru, Jogjakarta is one of the best cafe that I’ve ever been to. It offers a lot facilities like free wi-fi, PS3, X-box, Billiard, etc. And there’s more, the price is very affordable for students. I really want to open up a cafe like that near UGM or in Jalan Kaliurang, so that is more easily reachable by all of the UGM students that are living around UGM and Jalan Kaliurang. Opening up a cafe needs a lot money, but if you are well prepared and really have a great concept , you really should just make that dream a reality

  70. Suppose I am on owner of cafe, I want my cafe full with Lego. I call it the Lego Cafe. So I would make a cafe that looks like a building built by using Lego from the outside. Inside, I'll use Lego mural around the wall, and I'll put some interesting video games inside it. The waitress and waiter are dressed in Lego costumes. Of course, the menu would be much the same like other cafe ; such as coffee, some snacks, and some cuisine. And I'm going to build it around Jakal street. The reason why I choose Lego as the theme is because I'm not only going to attract middle-age people but also below middle-age as well ( around 16-18 years old ). I can see that there are some people who loves all sorts of toys like Lego, some action figure from TV station, and some trading card games. They can be a good investor when they find a suitable place to express their hobby, so that's why Lego Cafe would surely be a nice place for them.

  71. Cafe! Well, since the number of newcomers are significantly increase every year in Yogyakarta, this kind of business will be a promising thing. If I get the chance to raise a business, it will be more like a coffee shop. But, beside selling only coffee and things, I would also give another alternative menu for drinks, pastries, and foods. And it also would offer the famous Italian ice cream: gelato (since it has attracted many people taste of food here). For the concept, I think, I will make a water concept, where the consumer will be surrounded by water. For the example, the floor will made of transparent glasses, and there will be a huge fishpond bellow it. It will be so exciting to see and feel the fish, just below us while drinking a cup of coffee. Hahaha. Oh, oh! And also my imaginary coffee shop will be located in the centre of the city. So after you get a tiring day at work, you'll get a relaxing and comforting atmosphere.

  72. If I owned a café in Yogyakarta, I would make it in a fantasy concept. I want to make it as a café in which you can forgot the border between the reality and imaginary world. I want to offer the consumer a place to experience the imaginary world.
That’s why I need a big building for my café, because I want to divide it into some parts. Each part will have a different concept. I want to divide it into Wizard, Greek-Mythology, Egypt-Mythology, Vampire, Werewolf, Fairy, Shape shifter and Nephillim village. I will decorate each village based on the concept, and the waitresses are going to be dressed up based on the concept too. So, you’ll experience how it feels to life as a werewolf, vampire, etc. In addition, I will make the ‘gray area’ in the center of the building as a part where you can find each species live in harmony.

As for food, I’m not gonna serve only snack. There will be some meals with affordable price too. And, I’m going to provide wifi with high connection. I will make my café to be as much comfortable as I can, so people will enjoy spending their time in my café.
Of course the cost will be quite high considering to my concept, but yeah it’s what I dreamed about and I think there is no right and wrong in dreams.

  73. Hhmm what will I do if I had café in jogja? Hhmm what ideas that I have? I have a lot of great ideas that is in my mind about this. Well we all know that jogja is a city of student, there are many students from all around Indonesia who go to jogja to study in many university in jogja, fo example UGM our beloved university. So referring to that, we know that university student commonly choose cheaper stuff than higher price product for example for food, drinks, and anything else related. Referring to that, I have an idea to make a café that the environment feels so sophisticated and feels wow I think the café is selling expensive stuff here hahahahaha. But the coffee beans that I make will not be a high class coffee beans, I will just make the coffee looks expensive hahaha. And from that idea that I made maybe it will a lot of customer especially university students.

  74. If I owned a café in Yogya I would also target mainly students because they like to go out and need places where they can meet friends and surf in the internet. A good internet connection is also important. It can be seen at the example of “Dunkin Donuts” in Jalan Kaliurang that fast internet is an important feature if you want to target students, because fast internet is expensive and scarce in Yogya. In general, I would make the café look like a café in Europe, with nice furniture, comfortable sofas and flowers. It should just be a nice place to meet friends and hang out. The café should also have a garden so that my customers can sit outside and breath the more or less fresh air of Yogya. For the menu I would definitely serve "real" and good coffee. Because in Indonesia it is so difficult to get some good coffee, as most of the restaurants and warungs serve the cheap Nescafé coffee and “Good day” cappuccino which both don’t taste good. I would also offer bakery food, like croissants and "real" bread with good cheese for example because that is definitely something I miss in Yogya and I think a lot of other foreign people miss that kind of food, too. Like this, the café could not only become popular within Indonesian students, but also within foreigners.

  75. If I make a café, I will make a café that sell variety of coffee. Because I think drinking coffee is really favored in Indonesia. I ever tried the coffee from Flores, Nusa Tenggara Timur, because my grandmother is from there. The coffee’s taste is very good and I believe that Indonesia has many kinds of good coffee. In Indonesia, many people spend their spare time by drinking coffee. Coffee can overcome the changing mood that we feel and depression. The special thing that I will make is there will be some birds in the cage and the guests will enjoy for its twitter. So that the guests will relax and feel good by drinking coffee and enjoy the bird’s tweeting. It is because the tweet of birds also can relax our mind. So the guests who come with bad feelings and mood will be relaxed and able to think normally. This café can be used for the bird lovers’ gathering. They can enjoy the beauty of the birds’ feather with unique colours. This café is also available for the people who want to study because of the relaxed atmosphere without any noise.

  76. If I owned a café in Yogya, I would create a cozy place to hang out and meet with your friends. The menu would have a rather small choice, but well-chosen. Good coffee and some refreshing drinks combined with self-made cakes or sandwiches with “real” bread shell be served as a small meal. The cozy atmosphere will be established through comfortable furniture, some decoration including flowers and pictures and a good light installation that will create a warm atmosphere. As already mentioned by some of my classmates, the service should be nice and serve for example the food and drinks at the same time. I could also imagine hiring students as employees, as they would match with the target group of young people. The café should be located along one of the main roads but with a nice backyard as a beer garden, that allows for sitting outside and enjoying the fresh air, especially at night. I would like to make some special events every month to offer especially students more possibilities for partying, might be a dj, live band or a karaoke night.

  77. If have the chance I would like to make a board games café. Not only board games are fun to play, but it could bond people closer as well. When people have things in common it makes them closer. Since most board games are multiplayer kind of games, I need to train my staff to play the games so if there is customer who comes alone he could still play the games.
The café will be divided into different sections. Each section will have its own genre. Foods and drinks will also divided into different themes. All section will have the same food but it will be presented differently depending on the section, to make it more attractive.
I think café layout and ambiance are very important. It decides the mood of the consumer. If the consumers like it, they will play for longer time and hopefully they will return for another game.

  78. Owning a café is one of my dreams. I always want to have and build my own café. If I owned a café in Yogyakarta, I would make a big café with 2 rooms in the café. The first room would be like a games room. In this room, there would be some game machines, PlayStation, online games, foosball, and many other games. In this room, you could clear and refresh your mind with doing a happy activity which is playing games. The capacity of this room would be about 10-15 people. The second room would be like cozy and relaxing room. Some people, especially students, are choose to do their assignments in a café. So I would make a cozy and relaxing place for others that want to relax and do assignments with less sound. In this room, it would be very cozy and there would play some relaxing music. The capacity of this room would be about 20-30 people because I think there would be lots of people that came to this room.

In my café, for the coffee drinks I would sell drinks with the best quality of coffee beans. And for the foods (pastries, cakes, cookies, etc), those would be made by myself. Because my dream is have my own café that offers foods that made by myself.

  79. If I owned a café in Yogya, the name will be “Goa Muvi”. Goa Muvi in English means Muvi’s Cave. So I will use Cave instead of Café. Muvi, actually that is my sister’s name. The concept of “Goa Muvi” is a café with a lot of books. Why? Because my sister and I really love to read. The café will be a nice café with the nice atmosphere to gather with friends. The café will serve food and beverages, with the special barrista. In Goa Muvi, people can read all the books that they want while enjoying the food and drinks. It will be a comfortable place to study with the fast hotspot connection. The Goa Muvi concept is warm, nerd, and comfortable. The basic color will be brown combination, with the wood ornaments, so it will be look like the real cave. There will be a fake fireplace that make the warm atmosphere. It will be located on Sagan street. The price will be at 20.000-60.000. It is rather expensive, but the Goa Muvi will give the best service and best quality of food and beverages for the customers.

  80. If I owned a café in Jogja, I would go all out with the “student’s only” theme. Seeing as Jogja is well known for its educational perks. The café will mostly focus on a modern but affordable range in menu. As for the building itself, it will be a two storey building with a café in the first floor and a student’s corner in the second floor.

The first floor will be a place for customers to study and hang out. It will consist of few tables and chairs (not too cramped) so that students have a nice and conducive area to learn; not forgetting the high speed Wi-Fi which will also be installed. The café will play classical pieces so as to not disturb the customers.
The students’ corner on the second floor will be a place, complete with items that pupils need to finish any assignment or homework. There’ll be a kiosk in the middle of the room for any of their writing utensil needs. The west side of the room will provide printing/photo copying machines; as well as an assorted paper area (for any kind of paper). Lastly, the north-side of the room will provide an essay making area like the one mentioned on “A first-class essay? Yours for just £660” post which I think would be a great new business.
Besides the one I mentioned above; I was thinking that a café near “merapi” would also be good. It will have a different concept, and only open on the weekends (At times when there are many visitors).
Well those are my thoughts for an innovative café in Jogja thanks for reading.

  81. Thank you for Mr. Adrian for bringing this article to the blog, I’m interested to everything that relates about entrepreneurship. Have my own business is one of my goals for the next 10 years. Make a café would be a great start to gain a new experience in a business environment. Since there are lots of universities in Yogyakarta, people called Yogyakarta by city of students. There are also many restaurants in Yogyakarta that set their price as cheap as possible in order to attract their consumers that most of them are students. Based on the background, I would take students as my potential consumers.
If I owned a café in Yogyakarta, the price of food and beverages are have to be affordable for students. My café concept is kind of garden café that full of tress and has live music along the night. The chair and table is made from wood. The café would be decorated by many decorative lights and it would be a cozy place for students to hangout. I would put wi-fi in my café to facilitate students to do their assignment.

  82. When my father asked me about what will I do to improve my business skills in Yogyakarta when I entered the University stage, I spontaneously said “I want to make a café.” At that time I was very much influenced by café because I was playing in a jazz band for a café, regularly. That’s why I want to make a café that provide a stage for band to play soft jazz music; piano-trio, jazz mainstream, jazz lounge, Bossanova, and all jazz that comfort the customer. So my café would be a jazz café.

Beside the regularly soft jazz music, I also want my café to host a premium jazz event that show great jazz player; national, or even international. So I have to make it big enough. The concept is to make my café look like a big-ass UFO (flying disk) that crashed to the ground, it’s not impossible. Why? Because it will be different than others, and I sort of like extraterrestrial things; aliens, UFO, Spock, and Darth Vader.

  83. If I owned a cafe in Jogja. I would like to have it really unique as possible. I want to make my walls from wrecked cars by standing it and mix with some stuff from drinks like cans, bottles, and etc. For the interior of my cafe. I will give lots of luxurious cars to enjoy it inside of with big space and privacy. My cafe will run by 15 people and the rest is just computer that already set up. This is insane but maybe I could make it true if I had lots of money. There will be no doubt of services, food and baverages. It’s all guaranteed from entering my cafe till costumers come out. There will be no charge of parking!. Honestly, I don’t really like the way people who tend to be a parking keeper. Sometimes when we come, they don’t pay attention to make sure that we get parked but ignore and when we’ll get out place. They are asking for money. So, big no for picking any charge from parking in my cafe

  85. Having my own business is one of my dreams since a long time ago, and it still is. And owning café is one good start point to get some experiences like instances are managing the human resources and serving good quality of food, and good services too. I truly want to own business and I think café is just perfect for starter. If I owned a café in Yogyakarta, I would decorate it like a Western American theme. Sort of like a cowboys and country theme put in all together. The decoration would have some cowboy pictures hanging on the wall and cactus trees on every corner also wagons and bales of hay which are giving characteristic charm and western touch in it. The food would be like western food too such as T-bone steaks, classic seasoning fried chicken, broiled Salmon Steaks and else. The range price would be like middle-up, but there would be some promos like for students and maybe promo during the week or in holiday season, etc.

  86. My mom owns a 3-floor café near my house in Tangerang. The first floor is used for café, the second floor is used for batik boutique, and the third floor is used for gallery. Actually I don’t really like the concept. But, if I owned a café in Jogja, the coffee bean would be from around Indonesia, Sumatera to Papua. And the building would be very minimalist with so much big window. So if it rains outside, people can enjoy the weather while they drinking their coffee. And I can reduce my expense in electricity if it sunny outside. Of course there would be many vinyl and old school CDs for the decoration. For the music that would be played, maybe some kind of Adhitia Sofyan, Kings of Convenience or The Paper Kites, not too loud and guitar is the main instrument. So people can enjoy their conversation more. That would be horrible if metal music became the back sound in a cafe. And the most important thing is a spacious parking lot. So people would enjoy staying in my café for hours without thinking about their car, motorcycle, or bike. Finally, there would be special discounts for people that riding a bike to my café. Thank you for reading.

  87. This article is interesting for me; actually running a cafe in Jogja was one of the promising businesses. This is because Jogja had a lot of tourism places and study destinations for some people, every year the number of newcomers significantly increasing. If I had opportunity to own a cafe I would have a Cozy and recyclable cafe, every single part in the cafe is from a recycle things. I also want to have a lot of delicious food and meals from Indonesia or other country, facilities, with a cheap prices, and it will located near UGM or any university in Jogja. My target was a students and football fans so my cafe offers many entertainments such as XBOX, PS3, Billiard, Free Wi-Fi and for the football fans will got a discount if they watch football match in the Cafe. Besides those entertainments we offers study rooms for study or doing homework.
