Are students finally learning to cook?

Could organic veg boxes and MasterChef classes turn students on to good food?

'I would probably go for the Super Noodles. Or the peanut butter." I'm in a corner shop in the University of Leicester's student quarter with three undergraduates, here to buy ingredients for a fast, easy dinner. The instant noodles and peanut butter feast will, if they have anything to do with it, be bolstered by frozen pizza and bacon.

The reason student cooking cliches never change is that being a student never changes. There are always the same restrictions – lack of money, space, equipment, time and ability – and food is low down on the list of priorities. Going to gigs and dressing well will probably always trump eating good food.

Students cooking.
Graduating to cooking real food … Amarildo Adams, Brogan Rogers and Olawale Alaba-Yusaf.

Amarildo Adams, Brogan Rogers, and Olawale Alaba-Yusuf spent last year in halls, where cooking was mostly the assembly-and-heating-up school of cuisine: "I'd buy bread and ham, frozen pizzas," says Adams. Alaba-Yusuf had good intentions, realising it was cheaper to cook spag bol than order a takeaway – but lost interest. "I don't like cooking alone." Rogers worked as a chef before university: "I did mainly desserts ... It was basic." This stint in kitchens hasn't ignited a passion for cooking, as evidenced by his fondness for instant noodles. None of them owns a cookbook, and they are more likely to turn to YouTube for instruction than recipe sites, magazines or food blogs.

The food revolution that is meant to have swept up young people across the UK, with its emphasis on good food at music festivals, pop-ups and street food, seems to have passed students by. It is the twentysomethings who are into slow food and supper clubs. But there are signs of a shift. Fiona Beckett, who runs Beyond Baked Beans, a website for student cooks, has noticed a difference: "More students will admit to enjoying cooking rather than glorifying in eating unhealthily," she says.

Joy May's Nosh 4 Students is in the top 10 most popular cookbooks on Amazon, while student-friendly blokeish YouTube channel Sorted ("recipes, video, banter") has amassed 13m views. And this shift isn't just bottom up. Loughborough University has set up an online student cooking channel, and other universities are following suit.

The University of Salford runs free cooking classes, including a masterclass from 2011 MasterChef winner Tim Anderson. "There's been more interest than we could accommodate," says Amanda Rigbye, the healthy lifestyles manager. "We are looking at ways to expand the classes." The university is also establishing ties with local businesses. "We're linking in with the Biospheric Foundation to provide students with a fresh fruit-and-veg box each week."

Katie Siddall at the University of Leeds student union tells me there is a farmers' market that is "really popular, although a little more expensive than some local shops".

Back in Leicester, as the grocer tots up the vegetables and herbs, I ask the guys what they reckon it will cost. Rogers and Alaba-Yusuf guess £7, Adams says £15. It's £4.11 – rather less than they spend on Domino's twice a week, even when we add a chorizo and some flour. Back among the blunt knives and scratched pans in their kitchen, we make chickpea and chorizo stew with flatbreads. "I've never cooked so many vegetables at once," says Alaba-Yusuf. When the finished dish is put on the table 30 minutes later, he is amazed: "Did we just make that?"

I ask the three housemates if they will do more cooking this year. "Come back next June and find out," says Rogers, chest puffed out. I just might.

  1. I can’t really say if students tend to cook more themselves than some years ago. In Germany I think that many students cook at home because eating in restaurants is far too expensive. Even eating in the university canteen or take-away is more expensive than cooking at home. In addition, in my university the canteen food is not really good. Sometimes I used to cook with (or for) my roommates or friends, that was always a lot of fun. From my friends in Germany I have seen many different cooking habits. Some of them can cook really good because they learned it at home, some couldn’t even cook spaghetti with tomato sauce (instant of course) when they started studying.
In Indonesia my eating habits have changed a lot. Here it is more expensive to cook than going to a warung or restaurant. That’s why I almost never cook on my own. In the past 8 months me and my roommates cooked not more than 10 times at home. Sometimes I miss cooking, but I don’t like our Indonesian kitchen and we lack a lot of cooking equipment. Furthermore, many ingredients to cook a nice German meal are not available in Indonesia. My diet in Indonesia consists mainly of toast with jam for breakfast, because unfortunately real bread and real cheese are difficult to get and rather expensive. For lunch and dinner I usually eat Indonesian food. Sometimes when I can’t eat rice any more I have Western food like burgers or pizza.

You have probably figured this out already, but you can get pretty good bread at R and B Grill on the road that joins Jalan Magelang to Jalan Monjali [near the south end]. They also have stuff like cheeses, pickles and other [rather expensive] imported food. The branches of Superindo supermarket scattered around the city sell some fairly good bread ["french" loaves etc.], by which I mean not overly sweet. Branches of Kobayashi bakery [the one I know is on Jalan Magelang] sell a thick sliced brown bread that makes good toast!

I am living in Jl. Magelang close to the Kosmo factory outlet. Where exactly is the Kobayashi bakery? I haven't seen it yet.

    3. If you are near Kosmo then Kobayashi is about 1.5 km to the south. It's on the east side of the street not far from the traffic lights at the south end of Jalan Magelang. That gets a vote for good brown bread for toasting. Another bakery of note is Hani's in Jalan Prawirotaman.

  2. One of outcomes of living on your own is having the ability to cook atleast a few dishes that are easy and instant. But it is also true that with our hectic college schedule, we might find it easier just to buy food from warungs rather than cooking a whole meal for ourselves. To be honest I’m getting sick of eating the same meals from the limited menus provided from the warung near where I stay. I can’t say I’ve ever cooked a meal the last three weeks here, but I tend to make toast with Vegemite. Please don’t judge me on genuinely liking Vegemite. Many of us are used to having a maid that will serve our daily meals, but i asked my maid to teach me to cook properly before I came here. Some warungs aren’t really healthy, you can’t guarantee if it’s sanitary. The ultimate reason of why I would prefer cooking is that I am sure that it’s just the way I want, and I can rely on it’s cleanliness.

  3. Hectic college schedule? I think most people here have on average maybe one class a day or even less. There should be plenty of time left for fixing a meal. I agree with you that most of the time it is a convenience problem, but rather caused by laziness or missing abilities/knowledge on how to cook than by time management. I think especially in Jogja it is so easy to find food anywhere, even late at night.
I agree with Lisa that in Germany/Europe it is way cheaper to cook at home than eating out. But does this also count for Indonesia? I am not sure. In my opinion you cannot compare a “western meal” to a meal at the “warung” in terms of price. I have not made any calculations, but I cannot imagine that buying rice/meat/fish/vegetables etc. and cooking at home is that much more expensive than going to a warung/restaurant.

Are any of the Indonesian students who are living away from home willing to give us an idea of a typical week in your life in terms of food?

You could tell us what you eat and how much you spend over a period of seven days.

  4. Referring to Tobi and Adrian: You can get a soup with a little bit of chicken meat and an Es Teh on Jl. Magelang for IDR 11 500. Since I have been here I cooked just once – tempe with rice, fried chicken and sambal kecab together with two Indonesian girls. All together it was much more expensive than the amount mentioned before.
When I was back in Germany I used to cook at least for 4 times a week. Especially I liked to cook Lasagne, potato casserole (potatoes au gratin with cheese and cream), vegetables just roasted in oil and vegan apple cake. Every morning I had very good muesli with milk. Unfortunately I don’t have an oven here and in addition good muesli is really expensive.
From my point of view people in Germany have some kind of "breakfast culture". Sometimes on a Sunday morning I used to go together with my family and some friends of my parents in a restaurant and we had some pretty good breakfast with bread, jam, cheese, orange juice and chocolate cream (!). Here in Indonesia I don’t really have some breakfast or just some slices of too soft white bread. For dinner and lunch we have a soup or some fried rice with chicken in a warung.

A "full English Breakfast" would be bacon, eggs, fried egg, mushrooms, black pudding, fried bread or toast & butter... and a pot of tea.

When I was a kid going on youth hostelling holidays in Europe [mostly in France] I used to like the very different "continental breakfast", as we called it, which consisted of fresh French bread, butter and marmalade or jam, with a big cup of hot coffee or chocolate.

  5. I really admit that cooking is troublesome, more over for student. Absolutely we lack of equipment, space, time and also ability. Buy food in the food court i think is not good solution, we did not know how they cook the food. I mean we did not know is that the equipment and the kitchen clean or not. We can not know what ingredients they use, is that the ingredients is save to consumed or not. Is that the food is fresh, health, and hygienists or not?
I once ask my self, supposed i cook a food in the morning, then in the afternoon moreover in the night the food will be rotten. The question is how can the food that sell in one food court can stay good until the night? I will not say what is the name of this food court, because i see that many of my friends tend to go to this food court, and i won't start any debate. And i will not ask my question to this food court, because i guess they will just lie to me, more over i think that was not important for me.
In my opinion i find cooking is very interesting. I think a man that can cook perfectly will be more interesting and also cool. Nowadays cooking is raising up in the daily life. As we can see in television there are so many kind of cooking activities, from promotion purpose until cooking competition we can find in the television.
When we cooking by our self we will know ingredients, equipment, and the kitchen condition. So then we can guarantee the quality of the food. Cooking is easy, because we do not cook like tenderloin or big pizza or other difficult food, we just cook for our daily. We can start for easy food such as broccoli, kale, and many other vegetables.

  6. Since I was in junior high, my mom always asked me to help her when cooking. At first, I felt annoyed because I was too lazy to do that. But, now I feel the importance of cooking by yourself. My mom told me if I often eat fast foods, or street which is sold in the street are very unhealthy. Because the foods contain some compounds that will harm our body if we consume it continuously. Besides that, it could cause many serious diseases like cancer, hepatitis, and infection to digestive system, etc. One of my friend got leukemia because she often eat unhealthy foods on the street. She took some (torturing) medical procedures and it takes her several months to get healed from it. Because of that, it frightens me. So, everytime my mom asked me to help her cooking, I was excited to do it because cooking a meal for myself brings many advantages. By cooking by ourselves, we can guarantee that some ingredients we use are healthy so we can eat it undoubtedly.

  8. In my case, I usually eat my boarding house mother's meals. Only pay Rp 5.000,00 to her every time I eat (actually I pay to her every ten times I eat to make it easier) and I'll get rice, with tempe, kerupuk, capcay, sometimes egg or fried chicken once a week. But I usually have my lunch outside the house, so I have lunch around campus. Sometimes at cafetaria, sometimes at 'bonbin', sometimes at food court near Kopma UGM. 'Burjo' is one of the alternatives to get the meals without paying so expensive.

During weekends, if I don't want to eat rice as my breakfast or my dinner, I eat noodles (yeah, the most favorite food for us, the students who live far away from home) or oatmeal. It's easy to cook. To be honest, I want to cook my favorite foods like my mom used to cook, like 'sayur asem', but in my boarding house, I can't cook anything except the noodles or egg or sausages because it will lessen too much gas (the owner of the kost stated it on the policy that written on the wall). Yeah, different boarding house has different policy.

  9. To be honest, I can't cook. I can only cook instant noodles, sunny side up, and lenggang. But that doesn't mean I don't want to learn how to cook. Actually I would really love to learn how to cook. Because it's cheaper and the food quality must be good because you cook it yourself. Moreover, I don't want to buy food in warungs, food court, or restaurant all the time. Maybe next time I will learn to cook from my mother.
About my student diet, I usually do fasting every Monday and Thursday to minimize the food cost. Fasting make me keep healthy too. Sometimes I also merge breakfast and lunch on Tuesday or Sunday, because I usually get up late because there is no class on those days. Fortunately, the first 4 weeks of the first semester, all the new students must attend Softskill on Saturday. And we get free snack and free lunch!

  10. Sometimes, it's not because we cannot cook. It's because our laziness that makes us choose the instant meal instead of cooking by ourselves. Or it's because we have lack of time and very much assignments to do and sometimes college students are rarely being home. In that occasion, we have to buy the meal outside. Actually, my mom stocked some side dish in the fridge such as rendang and dendeng balado, but I never heat it since my mom put it in the fridge about three weeks ago. I often go outside my house from morning to evening, so I eat outside. I don’t have any time to cook the rice, too. Moreover, there is no people who eat the rice in my house. Instead of being dry, it’s better for me to buy the rice outside for one portion. If my mom come to Jogja, usually I asked her to bring some homemade dendeng balado, because it's delicious and clean. Actually, I don't really like eat outside. Furthermore, I don't like eating something instant. I avoid it as possible, but sometimes I can't. Sometimes we need something practical in order to use the time more efficiently.

  11. I guess not all people in this world born with the ability to cook. As for me, I am one one of those unfortunate people. In my opinion, man could only just sit down and wait for the food to come. But then since I watched that Master Chef thing in tv, I guess I would take back my words. But still, up until now, I can't even think of making a food even if a frying pan is already in front of me, and a spatula is in my hand. So that's why I like instant food or fast food very much. I do really know about the bad side of eating those junk, but what can I do. When you low on budget, surely you would do that. I like eating nasi padang, but then again it is way out of my wallet's reach. So that's why I only eat it once in a month, or twice in a week if my wallet could afford it.So that's why I tell my mom that I am sorry for wasting a lot of money just for food, and my mom always says it is okay. Well, she understands that she has a small boy with big stomach. But I always think, that if I am about to take the double degree program, I should start considering other things that is also important apart from studying hard. One of them is cooking. There's no way I could afford to buy food that is similar with the one I always eat in Indonesia. That is way of my budget. And if I keep buying foods every time I eat, then surely I wouldn't able to survive for a week. That's why I want to study how to cook properly without burning the whole kitchen down. My mom also told me that she would bring a rice cooker whenever she visits me here, so at least before I know how to cook something, I know how to cook rice.

    1. "But then since I watched that Master Chef thing in tv, I guess I would take back my words."

It's interesting to see how popular TV programmes about cooking are. When I was a kid there were only two cookery programmes on TV. Nowadays, there are whole channels devoted to cooking. The first TV programme I ever watched in Indonesia was a cookery show and it was demonstrating some sort of noodle dish. The background music was an instrumental version of the theme from 70s US comedy series M*A*S*H, the words to which are "Suicide is painless. It brings on many changes". I'm not sure this is the ideal music for a show about cooking!

      Delete
    2. Actually sir, I didn't say that I would take back my words after watching cooking show only, but what I really wanted to say was I needed a slight push to make me cook by myself. And that push, this far, is that cooking show. I saw a lot of men cooking there. That's why, I guess, if I try to play with spatula or frying pan more often and cook something, I might become a good chef someday. But up until now, that's a hard thing for me to do. How can I cook when I barely have time to sleep? Cooking also takes time, and the only time I have is right in the night. So that's why maybe I would just keep buying food and eat it. And about that cookery show, you should have watched how that Master Chef cooking competition served their music. It was full of creepy music that taunted the whole contestant so they could finish their cooking faster.

Since I was in Junior High School, I try my best not to eat unhealthy food. Of course, I reduce a lot of indomie or other instant product. It's really hard because most of my friends were eat indomie or another unhealthy food at school. It think it because healthy food is quiet hard to find. It also continue in Senior High School. A lot of my friends went to Mc.D to have lunch. It will be really nice if there's a lot of healthy food restaurants around school. Students usually don't have time to cook, and for me, I also don't have the ability to cook. Unfortunately, it is also hard to find nice ingredients with cheap price. I think healthy food are mostly quiet expensive for students. To buy fruits in supermarket is not popular at all among Indonesian students. They have limited time and money. Many of them prefer eat cheap unhealthy food instead of healthy food.
I envy those universities that have fun cooking class. I think it is a really helpful course for students. They need good food to have good life.

  13. Cook is the most important thing you have to learn especially for women. As a woman, my mom always tells me that i have to know how to cook. Before i lived by myself, cook was something undesirable. It's messy and complicated. But when i lived in United States by myself, i admit that my mom is right. I should know how to cook. First couple months stayed in United States, i was so stress. In the high school's canteen, the foods are kind of nasty and the taste is so bad. I really hadn't desire to eat lunch at school's canteen. My friends told me to bring my lunch box from home but i said that i don't know how to make my lunch and there is no one that can make my lunch ( In Indonesia my mom used to prepare my lunch box). So finally , i decided to learn how to cook. I read some recipe book or sometimes search it in the internet.
Now, I love cooking and cook is one of my hobby. Cook is actually fun activity to do, especially when you have some free time. I am not an expert at cooking but I like to try some new recipe. Sometimes , I make supper for my family. They often say that it's good supper. I'm pretty confident at cooking now.

  14. I would rather to buy a food outside than have to cook with my own because honestly I can’t cook. I Used to live in Jakarta with my parents and have a servent who serve a food everyday from breakfast until dinner. Now I live alone in Yogyakarta but in my boarding houses there are two servent. We can tell them to make food for us, anything we want like fried rice, meat ball, rawon and others healthy food. After we eat we only have to pay maximum is 10.000 rupiah for each food, it’s quite cheap than go to the market and buy a groceries. If we cook by ourselves it will be takes a lot of time especially if there are lectures in the morning we will be late to go to the campus. So it would be very easy or flexibel if we just buy food outside or tell people in the boarding houses to make us some breakfast or dinner. But later I will try to learn cook because I’m a girl and it’s a bit embarrasing. The first thing that I will learn probably dessert, I think that is the easiest to cook.

  15. Since I entered UGM and stay in Jogja, I have to cook several times in a week because I need to managed my money until the end of the month. If I always buy food out there everyday, I'm not sure my pocket money will enough for a month.
I confess, as long as I am here I usually cook an instant food like instant noodles, nugget, french fries, spaghetti and so on. I am here with my grandma. She was commented why am I always cook an instant food which is also unhealthy food. It's because my college daily life. I think i have no time if I cook soup or any kind of food like that. But I'm not really expert on cooking. So last weekend, I try to learn cooking with my grandma. It's also can helpful whenever i took double degree in abroad and officially live independent.
Before I left Bandung, actually, my mom taught me to cooking some food but i do not applied it yet because I think the ingredients is too much so it will spend much money too. I also decided to join cooking class when I still in Bandung but sadly, cooking class was opened when I have to leave. And my mom got an idea. She was remembered that she has an old book which contain of receipts. My mom actually learnt cook from her grandma so now, her book is mine. Cooking is important thing to everyone, especially girl.

  16. Cooking? Frankly speaking, I love it, but I love eating more than cooking. I love cooking since my first year of senior high school because in my “girls school only” there is the cooking and sewing class, and I prefer to cook than sew. It’s like the refreshing time for us for releasing stress of home works and tests. I still remember that my first cooking class in my school was to cook fried rice. At that time, I thought mine was the worse fried rice. There was no taste and the seasoning was very bad. I hated cooking class at that time. Then, I learned from this mistake that I had to prepare all the ingredients and the steps first before cooking. I realized that cooking class was just fun and I really enjoyed it. Every week, my dishes got better. From all of my cooking class in my school, my friend rice as my first cooking got the worse score compared to other food I cooked. I also love baking. Maybe, my friends are better in cooking or baking than me, their dishes tasted delicious, but I love my dishes as well.
After graduate from my senior high school, there was a long holiday and I didn’t know what to do. I started get bored stay at home. Then, I decided to join short cooking class program at ION Culinary School. I joined this program with my other four friends. I joined this program for one month, eight meetings. We wore the apron, the chef uniform, and also the hat for cooking. It was fun very much. I learn how to make the mayonnaise, salad, sandwich, chicken marry land, baked pudding, soups, and many more.
My favorite menu is the Chicken Marry land. Sometimes, I made it by myself at home for me and my family. it tasted delicious. I think that is my best dishes I can cook.

  17. Since in the Middle School, my mom has always asked me to help her cooking. Although I often help her, I just found out myself enjoy cooking a lot since I had an exchange year in another country last year. I didn't cook as much because I lived in a family. But to introduce Indonesia in my community, I had to learn how to cook several traditional foods of Indonesia. I cooked Satay plenty of times as people requested. I have to admit that You Tube is the best teacher ever in any kind of way.I actually have a passion in culinary. To me, cooking is an art. We need good sense of tastes and beauty. Since I love to do experiment like trying new recipes, I don't prefer cooking as a daily routines. I would love to cook western foods in my spare time though. The reason why is the food recipes are way more simple to do than Indonesians. So I reckon if I am being “ anak kosan ”, I would rather cook western foods a lot.

  18. I’ve always loved to cook. I also watched a lot of cooking programs back in Surabaya. But I’m not really an expert on it since I haven’t been able to use the kitchen in my house. My mom owns a catering business so the kitchen is always occupied.
One of the reasons why I’m very thrilled about going to college in Jogja is that I can finally have more time to cook. Well I that’s what I thought at first, but I live at Bulaksumur Residence dormitory and they don’t provide any fridge to store the groceries. However, I did have the chance to cook in the first couple weeks of my arrival here. And I agree with what the article said that it is a lot cheaper to cook on your own. It is also healthier and more hygienic than eating out.
But then again, the students here are already too busy with college and the assignments so we don’t have time to cook everyday. We tend to just go to the cafeteria or other restaurants to eat because it is more efficient.
To be honest I’m not that comfortable with the idea of having to always go out for meals everyday, so I’m planning to spare more time in the third semester of my study here to cook. I’m not really sure I will have the time though, but I hope I do.

  19. I love food, but i can't cook any food. But at least I can cook popmie or another instant noodle. I'd rather buy food outside maybe at KFC, seafood restaurant, or another restaurant than have to learn how to cook the food because I think it would be very hard to me and also I think cooking is hard and quite complicated hehe . And I think I have no cooking talent, so I think as soon as possible I have to find a maid for my new house which is located on Tentara Pelajar street to serve me foods for my breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And maybe I can ask her to teach me a little bit way how to make food . I don't think so I need lunch at my home because my schedule is really tight so maybe it would be better if I have my lunch at faculty of economics and business cafetaria that provides delicious foods with extra cheap price . Or if I want coffee and some pastries, I prefer to go to EB Cafe, because it is located on 8th floor of pertamina tower and the price is cheaper than starbucks . I enjoy buying foods so I think it doesn't really matter if I can't cook any food, but I hope someday i'll have an ability to cook.

    Thank you

  20. Everytime I heard the word “cook” I always remember my Mom taught me to cook, and I loved the way she taught me all about cooking. In addition to that, our family never had a maid. Trough learned how to cook with her, made me know that being a housewife ain’t easy. She said, as a college student and has been away from home, I have to process more, produce more, and learn more. Especially learn how to cook by my self. Honestly, for a month in Jogja, I’m really miss the taste of homecooking so that’s why I try to make breakfast and lunch by my self. Beside that, by cooking your own foods it is possible to eat sensible, delicious food, but spend very little money. Now, I can compare how much I actually save by making my own food at home than purchase a meal outside. Knowing how to cook has been valuable for me, and I would recommend any student to learn it, at least learn how to make nasi goreng or pasta.

  21. Now this is an interesting topic for me because my cooking skills are really not existent at all. This is not a secret though and when I moved out to start my studies in Pforzheim three years ago, I felt that my family and friends were really concerned about my eating habits. This concern was expressed by at least four cooking books that I received from several relatives and friends. Unfortunately this didn’t help much to develop my cooking skills. I can survive on my own as I can cook at least some basic things like pasta, “Maultaschen” (a typical German dish), pizza, couscous and instant rice. However it’s not that I didn’t try to improve my skills. Our university for example offers a program which is called “Running Dinner”. Two students form a group and are assigned to two other groups. Then every group has to cook either a starter or a main course or the dessert. Every group is inviting the other four people to their apartment and so you always have to “run” from one place to another in order to get the next dish. After the dessert, all students who participated in the “Running Dinner” meet at a bar and exchange their experiences. I participated with my roommate and it was a lot of fun. Not only that you can get to know new people but you can also try out new meals. I was also surprised about the quality of the dishes. Everybody tried to cook something extraordinary like self-made pumpkin soup or pasta with salmon-spinach sauce. The food was very delicious and it was the first time that I really enjoyed cooking! I think with such programs students are on the right way to finally learning to cook.

  22. Well I'm not totally good at cooking, but sometimes I make Indomie and fried rice or any instant foods like La Fonte (many variants of pasta). Yes, cooking your own meal is cheaper and hygienic than buying foods in warung or burjo, but it takes a lot of energy to cook for your own, it takes a lot of time especially for me, and then you must get your equipment cleaned after you finish eating. When I buy some foods in warung or restaurant, I only have to pay 13.000 rupiah maximum and I'll be full after that and its totally different for me when i eat Indomie or fried rice by my own, not so delicious and I still want more. In Jogja, foods are cheaper than my hometown so I don’t mind buying some foods every time I get hungry because food prices here are affordable for me, but sometimes it's over my budget.

  23. I live with my parents but we rarely eat home-made food. My dad usually cooks for us if the ingredients are available at home. Sometimes I help him a little and learn to cook since three years ago. Well, I’m a girl but I can’t cook side dishes. My dad encouraged me to learn cooking since I am a girl and I should cook for my family in the future. I remember at that time, my dad forced me to learn to cook. Every time he cooked in the kitchen after back from work, he always called me to take over his charge and instructed me. Well, but my dad’s effort caused me to like cooking. In my second year of high school, I got a subject called “tataboga” and I learned cooking, sewing, making crafts, and etc. Honestly, the day before I had my cooking lesson in school, I always asked my dad to accompany me practicing the dish which I will make. And about my diet, I used to eat many fast foods in high school because I had many course to attend and I need move fast. I always try not to eat fast food because it’s not good for health. My habit that I proud the most is that I don't like fizzy drink anymore since middle school and I started to drink a lot of water.

  24. Honestly, I’m not really good in cooking, but I love it. I usually cook with my brother in my town. But, since I moved to Jogja and now I live in boarding house, I can’t do that anymore. It’s not because I’m lazy, but it’s because of the facility in here and also time. In my boarding house here, they only provide small hotplate and small space for us. For cooking, we also need groceries. And to get groceries, we have to go to traditional market. I think this kind of a hard thing to do especially for newcomers because, they don’t really know about the traditional market. I think if we cook by ourselves, especially in boarding house where I live now, is hard to keep the groceries in good conditions. We can’t keep food in long-term and in a big quantity in our refrigerator. And also it needs time for cooking and buying groceries. That’s why for me, it’s better buying food in restaurant or “burjo” rather than cooking. Especially the food price in here is lower than in my town.

  25. Well, I don’t really like cooking but it doesn’t mean I hate it.
Yeah, I used to hate cooking when I was in junior high school because my parents always forced me to learn how to cook. They always told me that as a girl I should at least learn how to cook some meals, so I can be a good wife in the future. And, I hate it. I thought why I should learn how to cook when I can buy it. At that time, I even had a thought to marry a man who can cook well, so I don’t need to learn how to cook.
But, as the time goes by and I’m getting older, I realized the importance of cooking. As a girl, it’s true that I should learn at least some dishes to be a proper wife. I can’t rely on my future husband, because it’s hard to find a guy who can cook well.
Right now, I have learned to cook some dishes like fried rice, asparagus soup, chicken maryland, macaroni schotel, lasagna, other pasta, etc. And, yeah compared to the “warung” menus, those dishes are more expensive, but the level is different. I mean you can't compared the taste of "warung" and those dishes. And, if you compared it with Western menus in a restaurant, it will be cheaper if you made it by yourself. So, I think students need to learn how to cook especially for the girls.

  26. Actually cooking is fun, moreover if you cook a food with some of your friends. On the other hand, cooking need skill that might not all of the people have this skill. Since I came to jogja a few weeks ago, I haven’t cooked any food, I remembered that the last time I cooked that when I was in senior high, my friends and I cooked a fried rice, I still remember about my fried rice taste, it was too salty. I really want to learn how to cook a food properly, actually I haven’t got skill in cooking. Then I realize I have to start to learn how to cook now, since I few years later I would like to take double degree program. I’m sure that living price in Europe Is much higher than in Indonesia. That is the reason that why I have to start to learn how to cook now.

  27. Lucky me! I live in a dorm where I do not have to cook and have a catering instead. I just have to pay Rp. 800.000 each month and my breakfast and dinner will be waiting in my doorstep. I think it is really worth it to pay Rp. 800.000 monthly for two meals a day, instead of going out every time you are hungry. The menu is always changing, but mostly it includes chicken (such as fried chicken and chicken soup). The breakfast usually consists of rice (it can be fried rice or “nasi uduk”), proteins (such as fried chicken or fried fish), vegetables, and sometimes with a cup of chocolate milk or fruit. The dinner mostly consists of pretty much the same with the breakfast, but with white rice instead of fried rice or “nasi uduk” and pudding instead of chocolate milk. For lunch, I usually eat at the cafeteria on campus, which cost about Rp 10.000 or go to Pujale (pusat jajanan lembah). Since I moved to Jogja, I never cook. I never even turn the stove on. Even though there is a kitchen in each floor in my dorm, but I go there only to wash my dishes.

  28. I used to like cooking a lot when I was a kid. I lived in Lampung for almost six years back then, and it was so easy to find fresh fish at the traditional market. So, my mom and I really liked to make “pempek” every several months. I shaped it like star, moon, bear, etc. Until now, I have never seen any “pempek” which have the cute shapes like what my mom and I used to make. It was so cute and unique. The taste was great. After that, we also loved to bake cookies. I shaped it cutely too, because as a kid I used to like cute stuffs. But I don’t know why as the time goes by I don’t really like cooking anymore. Moreover, as I live in a dorm now, cooking feels so bothersome. I have a lot of things to do in my university life, so I don’t feel like using my time for cooking. Therefore, I prefer to buy food outside instead of cooking by myself.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don’t mind cooking by myself because I often did that back then when I was still in Jakarta. I cooked for myself everyday, especially in the morning when I wanted to have breakfast. I've learned how to cook from my mother since I was little so I already feel familiar with the kitchen and that kind of stuffs. But here living alone in Jogja, I feel so lazy after doing many activities on the campus and outside. I prefer buying foods from the 'warung' near my boarding house. When I first came here and went out to eat, I was so surprised because the price was really cheap compared to the foods in Jakarta. The place is clean, so I don’t have to worry too much.
Buying foods outside doesn’t mean I always eat at anyplace. I still have to take a look at the place and the kind of foods I can eat. I know some places are unhealthy, so I must to select it carefully. I often have a meal outside with my friends too, and I usually eat for lunch at the cafetaria on campus.
Well, I enjoy buying foods rather than making it by myself lately. Maybe I will start cooking again when I’m already bored with the menus.

  30. Since I was in SMP, my mom always asked me to help her on baking cookies or cakes. From that time, I started to love baking. I start to look for some recipes on the internet, buying the ingredients at the supermarket, and start to bake it by myself. I failed at the first time, but then I repeat the same dish over and over again until I made it perfectly. Done with baking, I start to learn making pasta. I always love to eat spaghetti and lasagna. So I think, it’s better for me to cook it rather than buying it. In addition to healthier and less expensive, cooking at your own is more fun and it’s easy to do. Once you can cook, you will feel more comfortable to eat your own dish than buying it. Just like my mom do. She cooks something healthy to eat. It makes me don’t want to eat at the restaurant because my mom’s dish is the most delicious than any other dish in every restaurants. In my opinion, it’s better to learn to cook from now, so in the future you can cook at your own and don’t rely on restaurants.

  31. I don’t like to cook very much. I love to make cookies such as “Snow White”, “Lidah kucing”, or “Nastar” but to cook meal; I don’t enjoy it very much. Although I don’t enjoy cooking meal very much, it doesn’t mean that I never learn how to cook it. Back when I was still living with my parents in Bekasi, I often helped my mother to cook. Usually I cooked my mother’s special recipe. But here in Yogyakarta, I can’t do that. It’s because my boarding house doesn’t provide the equipment such as stove, refrigerator, and others. But even if my boarding house provides those equipments, I don’t think I will cook. For me, cooking just for myself is more expensive than if I buy food, also I have to spend more time and energy to cook it, and after it done, usually I lose my desire to eat it. Besides, cooking alone is not fun, and I’m not confident with the taste of my food, I need someone else to taste it. It’s a bit funny I guess but yeah, I always ask my mom to taste my dish first before I serve it for my family.

  32. Since I was in junior high school, I used to bring my lunch from home. My mom used to always prepare the perfect lunch (rice, vegetable, meat, juice, milk, and some biscuits) before I go to school. Although sometimes food in canteen or in some restaurants nearby my school looks more delicious than my lunch from home, I still prefer to bring my lunch from home. Because, beside it was already healthy enough for me, I didn't need to think again about which food I would buy or eat. If I don’t eat, often it’s because I’m too lazy to think which food I’ll buy. So, actually this was my problem when I first lived away from my home, thinking which food I’ll buy to eat.

First time living in Jogja, I got surprised by the price of the foods here. The price is cheaper comparing with the price in Jakarta. I bought foods more than usual, my problem about thinking which food I’ll buy solved easily (even though mostly I buy chicken because sometimes I get lazy to think about another choice). Actually even though I’m living alone in Jogja, I still want to have diet like I used to have. So until now, I’m still trying to be able to eat rice, vegetable, meat, fruit, and milk in one day.

  33. Cook has been a part of my life because it's my passion. I enjoyed cooking since i was 6 years old when my father made a bolognese spaghetti and lasagna. He made lunch for me and my brother every weekend. I had a really awesome experience in culinary because i've already ate food from other country. When i was in junior high, my mother took me to Vietnam for a few day and she asked me to try Vietnam's authentic food, Pho. In the second year of senior high me and other 19 student went to Switzerland and i've tried Raclettes and Cheese Fondue. Cooking is an amusing task to do especially when you cook with some of good mates. Back in June 2013 all boys in my class come to my house to had a BBQ party. I used to cook something for my parents since I 10 years old and when in high school there are skill class that we should attend. The class comes in 3 category: Music, Art and Culinary. Based on my passion, most of my mates already guessed which class that I picked to attend.

  34. In UGM, the college schedule is definitely not hectic, if compared to other universities abroad. Therefore, we, the students, have ample time to prepare and cook meals on our own. I would definitely do so since cooking my own meals is comparably cheaper than buying them from outside and I enjoy cooking anyway. However, my "kos" in Jogja doesn't have enough kitchen utensils that enable the residents to cook their own meals (although to be fair, there are 3 kitchens, but as for who use them and why they are there still elude me). To ensure that I always get sufficient nourishment during my stay in Jogja, I put my trust in nearby "warungs". I know they are not the cleanest and healthiest choice, but seeing that food is not on top of my priority list (and also, it is very cheap here anyway), I will let it pass for now.

During my stay in Rotterdam, I definitely cooked a lot. Food was still not on top of my priority list there, but buying food from outside was so much more expensive than preparing my own meals. So, it was a rather easy choice for me, and I kind of enjoyed it anyway. Also, cooking together with my flatmates was more fun and we could have the time to interact and have dinner together during an otherwise busy college schedule.

  35. I spent my 3 years of high school in dorm. So I had to cook on my own, because sometimes I felt like "I don't want to have the same menu every week.". But when I didn't have the time to cook, I had to eat the food the dorm provided me. When I start to live in Jogja, I also find it hard to cook by myself because the lack of cooking equipment in my "kos". So I often go out to buy food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is cheaper than cooking by yourself anyway, so.. I think I'll be buying ready-to-eat food for now.

I sometimes worried about the hygiene of the food I bought outside, because there were rumors about food in Indonesia, where they want to lower their opportunity cost (in a very wicked way) by using for example dye clothing to make sausages look brighter and last longer.. But still I am grateful that I am still healthy now. I hope we won't find that kind of unhealthy food again in the future because sometimes, it can cause death.

My late mother was very feminine, so she taught me how to cook and do the housework. My grandmother also taught me how to bake but I think I forgot how. I wish I took notes for that! When I have the time, and equipment, I will surely open the cooking websites for students!

  36. Nowadays finding healthy foods are getting more difficult compare to years ago. Many of food and beverage businesses now focus on their profit, rather the customer’s satisfaction. Indonesia is an example of that, where most small food businesses are putting illegal ingredients into their recipe. Not only they put low quality ingredients but also using a used oil from bigger food businesses. Also they did not properly wash the cutleries. So sometimes it is better if you cook your own foods.
When you cook your own food you can choose and use the freshest ingredients. And use the best available cooking oil in the market. Cooking on your own will also save you money in the long run.
During my stay in Singapore most of them time I tried to cook by my self. Not only it is cheaper, I can adjust the taste to my preferences as well. On my opinion some Singapore cuisine are a bit tasteless and taste weird to me. This is because there are ingredients that are commonly used in Singapore cuisine but not in Indonesia cuisine.
However most students would prefer to buy foods rather cook it themselves. It is more convenience and also most students do not have the time and equipment as stated on the article above.

  37. I love cooking! In fact I actually wanted to become a chef rather than study business.
Well, I live at the dorm right now so I don’t have a lot of problems with what I consume because there’s already a canteen that provides clean food (I think). That one problem is that I’m bored with the menu really; it’s either nasi goreng or ayam. I want to cook at the dorm but I hate cooking alone, just in case something happens. Instead of cooking with a stove or oven, I cook using the rice cooker. I don’t know how I do it but the food turns out pretty good. There’s another problem though, the cooking is fine, and cleaning the dishes is just a no for me. I hate doing the dishes!
Overall I prefer eating out, not at the warungs though because I don’t want to wake up the next morning with a tummy ache.

  38. In my opinion students starting to learn cooking is due to the franchise of Master Chef TV program. As you may know that it is one of the most famous cooking variety shows in the world. Every country adapt it, like Master Chef Indonesia, Master Chef Australia, even Master Chef Korea. Due to the abundant number of shows, people would likely to watch it from their house. Especially since the food looks really delicious and the judges is no common judge which gives the emphasis on how good or bad the dish is. I personally started to have the will to cook on my own because of watching Master Chef. It would be great for me to cook such an amazing dish. Other reasons might be the quality of food in restaurants is not that good or the hygienic level is not acceptable. Students would not have any choices besides cooking on their own or look for other restaurants.

  39. Reading at this post, and well, cook. I not really am always cook myself. But, I've learned some easy cooking, such as: Oseng-oseng, Chicken Soup, Fried Chicken. My mom taught me, since I was 10. Because I always love to see how she cooks in the kitchen every weekend (because I can't watch her making breakfast in school days). Since she's a Bugis, she always cook Bugis food, which is very delicious, and most of the main ingredient are fish. 'Cause Bugis eat fish most of the time, and it is their favourite food. My mom also capable of baking cakes, breads and cookies. I used to help her to bake in every special occasion such as in Eid, she made Nastar, Kastangles, etc. She taught me how to set the oven/microwave temprature, how I should mix the ingredients, etc. And starting from that, I can say that I love cooking.

  40. College life changes everything! I never cook before, because my grandma used to do it. It pushes me to learn how to cook, and I just can cook simple meal such as nugget, french fries, noodles, etc. Actually, I seldom to buy food, because I doubt about the hygiene of it, but the word seldom becomes often since I has moved to Jogjakarta. My mom always worry about the way I choose my meal, because it’s rather difficult to find veggies rather than fast food. Every time I go back home, my grandma teaches me how to cook veggies in order to decrease my buying of fast food. Now, there is an improvement in my cooking skills (Although it’s just a little bit). I can make an Aloo Gobi -it’s a kind of stir-fry potatoes with cabbage- and other veggies meals. I still learn until now and I hope someday I will be good at cooking.

  41. The advantage of living alone is being able to cook, whether you learned it on your own or by demanding circumstances (e.g lack of money to buy take-away food). Although I like cooking and I'm able to cook several kinds of food, I prefer not to cook on my own in Jogja due to the lack of time, the inconvenience, and it being only a teeny bit cheaper than having to buy food in stalls.
Since I started living in Jogja, my diet consists mainly of food from burjos (local food stalls near student housing), cafeterias, and restaurants near Kaliurang St. It usually costs me about Rp 35,000 per day for the meals. I agree with Tsamara's concern regarding the food in warungs being unsanitary; you have to pick the places carefully. Thankfully, a small burjo near my housing, Pogung Baru, serves sanitary and delicious food with reasonable price. They also serve stir-fried kangkung, a healthy dish that only a few warungs serve.
Moreover, for the students who are concerned about the nutrition they get from daily meals, I'd recommend also taking supplements/vitamins every day, such as Enervon-C.

  42. Personally, I think that when living alone it’s better to cook our own food rather than going outside just to eat. College life changes everything, back at home in Jakarta when I want to eat something I just have to ask and the food will be served, but now I have to buy my own food. I like to cook and I think it’s cheaper and more hygienic than the food that we buy outside, but unfortunately the place where I live right now is not accommodating and I find it hard to cook there so it’s been tough for me. I think that making our own meals is better and it saves a lot of money even though it’s waste our time. Since I was unable to cook in Jogja I’ve lost weight. I think it’s mainly because I don’t really like going outside just to eat and sometimes I’m just too lazy to do that, and I know that’s not good for my health so I’ve been using some vitamin or food supplement keep me healthy.

  43. I really like to cook by myself. To cook at home is actually one of the things that is miss most while i'm here. In Norway it's way to expensive to eat at the restaurants, we only do that in special occasions when we have something to celebrate. When I'm here we eat out at the restaurants all the time, sometimes we even do it twice. It's because it's cheaper than making your own food. Luckily we have a kitchen at our house so we can still cook at home. We don't do it often, but it's nice to have the possibility to do it. When you cook at home I feel it's easier to eat healthy, you can make more of what you like and you can eat as much as you want. I really wish I could find some different grains here, then I could make homemade, dark bread and crackers.

  44. To be honest, I cannot cook. I never learned to properly cook a meal. The only thing that I can cook is probably IndoMie. Although actually I can heat up frozen meals, I think it wouldn’t be counted as cooking. Since I moved to Yogyakarta, I rarely eat at my boarding house. Usually, I went out to eat at warungs or restaurants with my friends. The price of food here in Yogya is incredibly cheap that I felt no need to learn cooking by myself. Given my everyday activities as a college student, I value my time to do my assignments, socialize, study, or shop for my daily needs. Cooking would be unnecessary as it takes up my time that could be allocated to do other things. However, even though I eat outside, it’s rare for me to eat junk food. I ate junk food once or twice in a month only. I am learning to watch on what I eat here since my parents no longer monitor me. But then again, the drawback of me not being able to cook is that in the middle of the night when nobody is around and I’m suddenly hungry, I can’t cook anything or go to the nearest warung because I’m too scared to go out alone at night. In the end, I guess I should actually learn to cook a little.

  45. I Love cooking. I really do. When I was still in Senior High, I did a lot of cooking in my spare time. Helped my maid cook for dinner, or just cooked for myself. But my maid always cooks Javanese food, which is so complex, so I mostly cook for myself. And I often brought some healthy food from my home for brunch. But now, I rarely cook any food due to so many assignments that must be done. I just eat what my maid served on the dining table and bring some bread for brunch.
However, I think it’s very important for freshman students to learn how to cook. Not only it can minimalize their expenses, but also it’s healthier for them. Because, it’s not guaranteed that food outside are all healthy. If you cooked your food by your self, you could choose healthier ingredients. Still, I know how busy the first year at University is. But you should try it sometime. Thank you for reading.

  46. To be blunt I have no talent whatsoever in cooking food; I'm much more gifted being on the other end of the room gorging it down. It's not what you think ... I'm not a good-for-nothing loafer. I have sincerely tried to grasp the culinary arts on so many occasions; only to find myself blundering miserably on my various endeavors.

It all started in High school when I first got the idea of going to college abroad; I was thinking of renting a flat where I could live by my own terms and care for myself. So I asked the maid working at home if I could help out with the cooking. When I eventually did help with the cooking, the food took an extra hour to prepare (and that was just me peeling the potatoes). After a week of trying to cook, my mom decided it was best for me to not "help" out in the kitchen anymore. Being I were more of a hindrance then help at all, getting dinner ready.

This wasn’t the only time I gave it a shot, I tried cooking countless times and up till now, the best I can manage is a bland egg and fried chicken.

So In the end all I got after a lesson in cooking were cuts, burns, and un-appreciation. You might wonder how I eat in Jogja the answers simple; take-out.

PS: Please excuse the made up word 'un-appreciation' I don’t know what short phrase in English could represent that. By the way my sandwich making skills make up for my poor cooking, I always try to make new kinds of sandwiches and they’re delicious (even if I do say so myself).

  47. I used to live in Jakarta with my parents and have a servant who serves a food everyday from breakfast until dinner. Now when I lived in Yogyakarta and that was far away from home I must find a foods by myself. I think I must have some abilities to cook at least just for easy and instant dishes. But the fact, Went to restaurant and buy some foods is easier and more efficient than we should buy some ingredients in grocery and cook it by myself. Although, buy some foods is easier and more efficient than cook some dishes I guess students still need abilities for cook, maybe just like instant noodle or fried rice that easy to cooked. It will prepare that someday you live alone and there’s no restaurant around a place that you lived and you have no vehicle to use while hunger is attacked your stomach. Ciao.

  48. Cooking is one of the basic human skills that has to be concerned by every people. At the time when I was still living with my parents, food and dishes always came out without me making them. But now I live alone in Jogja and I have to have the ability of cooking because nobody will cook for me, except in the restaurants. We all have to be able to cook instant food, such as noodles and eggs. Those kinds of food do not need a high requirement in cooking them. Noodles and eggs are two of the food that are needed the most by students because of their simplicity. These days, girls tend to have the priority of learning academics rather than learning the household skills. Having the ability to cook is one of my requirements for my future wife. For me, woman that cannot cook is not really a woman. I hope girls these days start learning to cook, especially in cooking simple food.

Because honestly, I love to watch cooking demos in youtube which are presented by famous 5 stars chef; Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, Marco Pierre White, and so on. But I only like to watch them on the internet. I never do or cook anythings I learnt on the youtube because I could not either manage to buy the ingredients (which are really hard to get in here,i guess) or cook them in the properly way because I have insufficient cooking utensils. But I really want to try to cook on of the easiest recipe I have learnt on youtube. But still, to be a good at cooking you have to be patient and keep trying to cook better and better. My brother also likes to watch cooking demos online, but he only watches them and has no desire or interest to try to cook one of the recipes.

  50. Cooking is a hobby, not all kind of person are really enthusiast in cooking. I don’t believe that a good food is because of the good skills in cooking. Everyone have a different taste, especially in food. There are some of people who like a spicy food and some don’t. We don’t need to learn about cooking because I think is just a waste of time and money. We can learn cooking by our self; we just need the time to practice it more. In completion like Master Chef they just being told to cook what the famous chef has cooked it before. They can’t create their own food with their own style and taste. I think it will not improve our cooking skills but only adding our menus of food. There are some of people who really like to cook and would spend their whole time in cooking because is their passion. As for people like me I rather to eat from the restaurant and cooking a simple food like instant noodle.

  51. I think although not many people are like to cooking but cooking nowadays it’s just like a must to people especially for a student to start learning cooking in order to survive if they live far away from their parents and from the nice facilities that the parents gives it to you including a food. Starting from cooking an egg and rice because now we have a rice cooker so make a rice is easy now and for the egg you just need an egg, frying oil, and a pan to make it. So I think in order to survive in the real world you must to learn to fulfill your need with your work including cooking. So wherever you are you will survive the situation like when you study abroad and you miss Indonesian foods if you can cooking you will easily make a famous Indonesian nasi goring or even beef rendang.

  52. “The University of Salford runs free cooking classes, including a masterclass from 2011 MasterChef winner Tim Anderson.
Wow, that is a brilliant program. Indeed, to support the lives of student -- limited-space, time and cost-- required skills that support in addition to boarding close to campus. When facing a crisis of cost or time, cooking is the only way to get food. We may not be ordered through the delivery service because it is charged and add to the price of food. I agree with the plans and programs which held by University of Salford. In addition, inviting the winner of Masterchef 2011 to conduct cooking demonstrations, students are taught to always eating healthy foods that maintain health and keep following college activity. Supposedly, university dormitories holding a program like the University of Salford held so that students have the skills and the provision of adequate nutrition so that they can follow the lecture. This is the best program I ever knew.

  53. I have ability in cooking. I can say that now cooking becomes my hobby. When I was in primary school, my mother always tell me to cook with her. I didn’t care whether I just cut the vegetables, or maybe washed the vegetables. But my mother taught me some food that easy to be cooked, started from cooked fried egg. At that time I believed that cooked fried egg was very difficult. Then I continued to cook my favorite food. I love kangkung vegetable very much! Kangkung is cheap vegetable and you can find it in every market in Indonesia. After that I tried to cook for my father’s lunch. My mom said that I have to be able to cook, because if I live without my mother, like nowadays, I have to cook for myself, even just cook fried egg or fried rice. It’s not good for us if we always have our breakfast or lunch outside. We don’t even know the hygiene. If it’s not hygiene and we always eat it, then we could get sick.

  54. Maybe some people think that cooking is women’s job and some men may think every woman should be able to cook. But the reality is not every woman can cook and some men also can cook. And sometimes there are some people that must know and learn how to cook because of their condition. For example students that study abroad and live alone and a man or a woman that has to live alone because of his or her job.

Now people love everything in simple, quick and instant way. And some students that study abroad and live alone think that cooking is difficult and troublesome. They like the simple and cheap food so they choose to eat or buy some foods in angkringan or burjo. But there are also some students that choose to cook by themselves for a reason of hygiene. Because sometimes some restaurants, burjo or angkringan don't really care about the hygiene and consumers health.

I live with my parents so I don’t have to think about cooking, because my mom does the cooking haha. But I love cooking and I’m still learning how to cook delicious foods. I like to help my mom to cook since I was in junior high school and sometimes I cook a meal by myself. And if I lived alone, I would choose to cook foods by myself because I think those must be really good and delicious haha

  55. I think it’s very useful and interesting for college students to learn cooking their own meals. Cooking by their own means healthier, fresher foods, and much cheaper than dining out at a restaurant. They should know that they need to take care of their health, because college students don’t really get enough sleep, they have to get done so many things, and chasing deadlines everyday. It’s also useful for the future if they want to cook at home for their family. They can also stay at home on Saturday night and cook some delicious dishes with their buddies, boyfriend, or girlfriend. It’s fun to cook rather than spending much money at a fancy mall. Buying fresh products also means that they support small local businesses. I think it also counts as a contribution. College students can look for a cheap (or even a free) cooking short course. It would be even more fun if they do it with friends or their date.

  56. Some people are born as a natural cooker or at least have a mother that loves to cook. Unfortunately, its not happening to me. I cannot cook and I’m actually have a phobia of cooking. It all started when I was 4 years old when there is no one home except my maid and I. When my maid was cooking, she let me sit next to the stove, as she currently cook something that she cannot leave and the fact that she was afraid to leave me alone while she was cooking. Suddenly the phone rang and she left me alone in the kitchen with the same position; sitting next to a stove. I don’t know what happen to me but when my maid came back, she got me crying to the frying pan on the floor and the cooking oil was all over my foot. That accident leaves scars on my right foot and my right ankle. From that moment, I always afraid with cooking, especially even to cook frozen meals like chicken nuggets or sausages. In addition, my mother is busy with her job, making her time at home is very valuable and doesn’t have time to cook. In Jakarta, all my life, I’ve been living with a maid who always do and prepare everything. So, dealing with maidless situation like in Jogja right now, I have to go out every time I want to eat. But, if I really lazy to go out, I simply place a delivery order. However, considering that I want to study abroad in the next two years makes me realize that I should learn on how to cook. I don’t think it would be possible if I always buy food at a restaurant since the price will not be as cheap as in Jogja. I don’t want to spend my monthly savings just for food though.

  57. As I know, my friends in Gadjah Mada University prefer to buy a food better than to cook. I think the main reason is they do not want to spend too much time on cooking while they have a lot of homework to do. In the article, it is stated that students do not like to cook in their daily life bacause they lack of money, space, equipment, time and ability. In Jogjakarta, the food in the small restaurant is cheaper than the vegetables or meat that you have to cook. The second one is space. Mostly, my universities friends live in the dorm. The dorm usually does not have enough space for cooking, although some dorms have kitchen. The third one is the equipment. Actually, there are a lot of equipment if we want to cook, for example stove, refrigerator, knife, pan, and so on. So, it means that if we want to buy these kinds of equipmensts, we have to spend more money. And I think that they will not waste their money to buy these equipment, because it much better if they buy books or the other things for their study. The forth one is the time. As I mentioned above, the students do not want to spend too much time on cooking, because in fact, they have a lot of things and assignments to do. The last one is ability. Not many people can cook, that is why it is like a special ability because it needs extra time to cook.
Some of my friends love to cook. But they usually cook in their own house and their own kitchen. Why? Because in their opinion, it is more comfortable than they have to cook in their dorm. So, are students finally learning to cook? Well, for me, it depends on the place and the situation.

  58. Many students in Jogja come here alone and live by their own self so it is better to have ability to cook. Beside it is cheaper than eat in restaurant, it also more clean and healthier. However, as busy college student, sometimes we find it hard to cook, so the fastest way just order or only eat bread. In here, we call it ‘Burjo’ place where people can eat very cheap. Nowadays, I think I already feel sick to eat what the canteen in dormitory provides. Because I live in dormitory, it is hard to find place to eat breakfast and dinner, the dormitory is far from Kaliurang Street and at night no one brave enough to walk outside because it is very dark. The dormitory provides us a small kitchen in every floor. However, the person who is responsible for the kitchen does not do her job. We already run-out of gasoline and water for dispenser, but she still does not buy again.

  59. Yeah, I totally agree with Zane Fauziah Baity’s statement “College life changes everything”. To be honest, I’m really bad at cooking but it doesn’t mean I can’t cook a meal. When I was in senior high school, I tried to make fried rice for my sister but I failed. She said that my fried rice is too spicy and after that I prefer to buy fried rice than to make fried rice. So why students should learn how to cook especially college students:
First, when you’re a college student actually your mom won’t always beside you to make your meals everyday. So that cooking for yourself becomes one of those necessary things that you’ll have to take up
Second, you can manage your expenses. I mean you’ll understand how much money can be save by cooking one’s meals at home instead of eating at a restaurant.
Third, if you’re cooking meals for yourself and using fresh ingredients (that don’t contain a lot of extra fat, calories, or salt) dieting and counting calories become that much easier and then you can be more healthy.

  60. This is a very interesting topic, because in Indonesia, students mostly don’t cook. They would rather buy food from outside or order delivery instead. Learning to cook won’t be easy for the first time. Actually, learning everything for the first time won’t be easy. So before you learn something, you must have passion about it, otherwise you’ll end up by giving up on learning that new thing. This is what I like about student abroad, they like to learn new things, and they are not lazy. They are actually willing to do anything to save some money and save their body from eating junk food or any unhealthy food. It’s a very good thing to do. But the problem is, can Indonesian students do that kind of thing?
I think applying that kind of thing in Indonesia is very hard, due to our cultural differences. Food in Indonesia is a lot cheaper that food in other developed countries. Even buying cooked food is a lot cheaper than cooking it by yourself. So, students prefer to buy rather than cook.

  61. I think cooking is one of the important skill that people should have. Most of young people nowadays seems not really interested to learn how to cook, especially students. Whereas for students who are living without their parents, know how to cook is quite important. Students usually choose to buy fast foods or instant foods because it is cheap and easy to prepare. Me, as a student who also live in Jogjakarta without my parents, have to admit that sometimes I prefer instant food. I know that eating instant food is not healthy and I do avoid that kind of food as possible as I can. But somehow there is a condition when instant food will be your only choice. Example; in the end of the month when my money just left less than Rp.50.000,00 in my wallet but I still have to survive for the next 1 week. That is why right now I learn how to cook, because cooking by your self is somehow cheaper than buying foods outside. And you can also guarantee the hygiene of the food you eat because you made it by yourself.

  62. I do like cooking, but honestly I cant cooking. I can say I like cooking is because if i can cook, I would like to make and add a new innovation for the food. For me, cooking is interesting, moreover if we have a big kitchen, complete utensils for cooking it will be more interesting. I think as a student, people will seldomly to cook their own food within many reasons like lack of time, lack of place and many more reasons. I understand it because I also feel the same, it it hard for me to always cook my own food, beside there is a limit for me to cook. So that is why majority of students are just prefer to buy their food, moreover especially in Jogja the price of food is relatively cheap and guaranteed about the taste.

  63. I love cooking so much. I used to cook every weekend with my mom and it’s kind of weekly routine in my house. My mother teaches me how to cook since I was a kid. But since I move to Jogjakarta, I rarely cook for myself because I also have a maid in here so she prepares all the meals from breakfast, lunch, and also dinner. I think it’s pretty important to have cooking skill for students especially a woman, because it will help you a lot. When you be a mother or somebody’s wife, you will feel easier if they asked you to cook for them. But when you become university students, you rarely have time for yourself. There will be so many assignments that have to be done every single day. So even if you can cook, you will not have a spare time to cook for yourself.

  64. I cooked for the first time when I was at 5th grade of elementary school. My friend, the neighbor, came to my house to play like he usually did. But that time we got bored, so we simply want to do something else. He asked me “why don’t we make pancakes?” and I answered “but I don’t know how.” And he told me that he done this before, so I decided to follow his instructions.

After that day, I realize that cooking is a fun thing to do (besides the mess that you have to clean up afterwards). You can imagine something sweet, or salty, or hot, and you can make it happen by cooking. You could also make the food taste the way you wanted. Well, I actually enjoy the eating time mostly, but the process to make the food is also fun.

Now that I live in Jogjakarta, separated from my family in Kalimantan, I often cook for my meals; especially some menus that is unavailable in the nearest restaurant or diner, like fruit n’ veggies. I even cook for dinner and serve it for my girlfriend. It’s nice.

  65. Cooking!. An awesome activities which produce a product called food and it can make us satisfied. I suggest that FEB UGM should held or have a class of cooking once in a month. Why ?, because it can make students feel not only eating knowledge but also having fun with lecturers or staffs. Or making a competition about cooking called FEB on pot. There will be an audition for every major. 5 people on each major in FEB will continue their journey to find out who’s the best chef among the remaining contestant. Imagine if it happens ?. I’m sure that all of students in FEB will at least try to learn how to cook. And even taking the real cooking class. Maybe our campus will always smells food. Attract people to come, then become a trendsetter to another major outside FEB. Trigger campus competition to make the same as FEB does. I realize that it’s too much of imaginating it but try to think it once.

  66. In my opinion, I think the idea of students are learning to cooking their own meals is a good idea. By cooking their own meals it simply means that they are become more independent than before also by cooking by their own it means that they are eating a much more healthier foods rather than to buy a food from the restaurant or dining out at a restaurant because they can guarantee about the quality of the ingredients that they bought. Although, I don’t really know if every college student are able to cook or not but it’s a good thing if they started to learn to cook right now. Sometimes, I do really like to cook by myself and try to taste my own cooking and the result is not really bad. Or they can actually buy a recipe if they find it is hard to choose what kind of food that they are going to cook. Finally, if the students are capable enough to cook they can actually sell their foods to add his / her own money.

  67. In my opinion, college student are having a lot of assignments and also activities. They do not often seem like have some times to cook their meal nor have lunch and dinner in the house, so I think it is reasonable for them to just buy the food outside.

Since I was little my mom always says that it is better to eat at the house, instead of eat outside the house, because the cleanliness is more preserved, so then it must be healthier rather than having meal outside. She also does not allow me to have an instant food and packaging food because there are a lot of preservative ingredients. If she does, it means that I can only have it for few and far between, she also asked me like a hundred times to learn how to cook. I did try it, but you know it is just hard. So I am not good at it.

Now I am in college, I do not have a lot of time to cook, and have bunch of assignments, plus I am not good at cooking meals so that is why I choose to buy food outside instead, or eat instant food.

  68. As a student myself, I do not cook. Although, I have my own kitchen and all the stuffs that needed for cooking. I once tried cooking for myself but that took so much time and money and effort. I got to buy the ingredients and believe me that was not cheap. The annoying part is I cooked for like 30 minutes or more but I ate for only 5 minutes. I still had to clean up the kitchen, wash the dishes, take away the trash, etc. In the end, I stopped cooking for myself.

I buy my food instead of cooking now. This is way more efficient for me. Sometimes if I am too lazy to go out to buy the food, I do not eat. Which is a good thing! This means I can do my diet better. But I always have oatmeal in my house, just in case I am too lazy to go out but need to eat something otherwise I would be a history.

  69. As a college student, we learn how to think critically, write and be more creative. But many of college students do not learn how to cook well especially male college students because I think they are too lazy to make their own meals and they don’t have many skills to cook well. Therefore, they prefer to eat at the cafeteria for every meal than cook their meals. So, not having the skills to cook well is one of many problems that many college students face when they lived away from their parents. I think it’s really important for us to count how much calories that we need for some activities. That’s why college student must learn how to cook healthy food, sometimes they buy some food but they don’t know how unhealthy that food: fast food. If you’re in diet program, I suggest to you to stop eating fast food, you should reduce your carbohydrates and before you eat something, better for you to check the composition first.
    Thank you.

  70. For some students that loves cooking, cooking may not be a big bother to them at all, so in the end cooking or take-outs depends on the student and whether or not cooking is their hobby. Furthermore, if you are a student in an area or location where there are plenty of foods that are cheap and sometimes healthy, like here in Jogja. Students does not feel the need to cook as there are many resources and many places that sells food all around them, so cheap too. One of my friends told me that he does not cook here in Jogja because if he cooks, it will cost him more than if he go to the restaurant or burjo and eat here.
The main problem for me to cook my dishes myself daily is not that I do not like cooking, but t’s because that I do not feel comfortable cooking in my boarding house as the kitchen is a shared kitchen and it is a bit filthy, I know that it is a bad reasoning and a bad excuse but I am just one of those hygienic person when it comes to cooking and preparing dishes.

  71. It is nice to hear that students nowadays start to learn cooking. Cooking could be a great advantage for them because they could learn how to be independent and save money. The case is that students often prefer to buy food in restaurants rather than to cook. They could really spend lots of money because of this. The only way to prevent this is by learning how to cook. As for me, I myself can't really cook. What I can cook is just some instant food such noodles, spagetti and others. It was not long till I graduated from high school I started to learn how to cook rice. But that's the least I can do. For other foods I could only wait for it to be cooked and to be served. Fortunately I live here with my family so I don't have to spend money on food and could still be cooked food that I can't cook. But sooner or later I will try cooking delicious dishes if I were go abroad and live on my own someday.
