Coconut water: all it's cracked up to be?

Coconut water contains natural sugars and some important vitamins and minerals, but is it the wonder tonic the hype suggests? Katy Salter reports

The Brazilians have been drinking it for years. So have people in India, south east Asia, the Caribbean and anywhere else that the coconut palm grows. Now coconut water has been liberated from its natural container and packaged for sale in the rest of the world. America's been quaffing it since 2004. Britain has come late to the party but here, marketed with crushing inevitability as a celebrity-endorsed natural sports drink, sales are growing fast: Vita Coco, which accounts for more than 9 of every 10 servings sold in the UK, is reporting sales up 122% year on year.

A green coconut

Then you've got Coke's ZICO and smaller brands like Cracker Coco, Grace, Tiana, and Biona. Vita Coco, ZICO, Tiana and Biona use 100% coconut water, Grace uses 85% coconut water plus ordinary water, and some brands, such as Cracker Coco, use coconut water in a mixed fruit juice. You can even sup directly from the coconut, thanks to start-ups like Cocoface, which sells fresh young coconuts from Thailand at markets and online.

Coconut water is the liquid found inside young, green coconuts. It's used in cooking too - Alice Hart cites it as a traditional ingredient in Thit Heo Kho Tau, a Vietnamese braised pork dish. "The coconut water is slightly sweet and balances out the salt in the braising liquid. You could also cook rice in coconut water, but dilute it with water or stock." Whatever you do, don't try substituting coconut water for coconut milk in recipes: unlike coconut milk, which comes from squeezing or grating the flesh of mature coconuts, the water contains no fat. "They're entirely different ingredients," says Hart. "It would be akin to saying sweetened skimmed milk can be subbed in for double cream."

But it's probably most popular as a drink. Fans prefer it to day-glo sports drinks, pointing to its lack of refined sugars and other additives, and it's also gaining popularity as an alternative to juices and smoothies. "Coconut water is rich in potassium, which enhances the body's ability to hydrate, making it perfect to drink after exercise," says Dana James, a nutritionist. "People drink it as a hangover remedy for the same reason. The magnesium also helps to enhance hydration."

The natural sugars provide energy, and nutritionists advise drinking it in moderation. "Coconut water does contain calories, so shouldn't be substituted for water or other lower-calorie drinks when trying to lose weight," says Helena Gibson-Moore of the British Nutrition Foundation.

Indeed, the marketing of coconut water as wonder tonic and natural sports drink has been somewhat overplayed. "Coconut water isn't the cure-all it's cracked up to be," concluded a 2011 report by the LA Times. Some nutritionists contest its value as a post-exercise drink, because it contains more potassium than sodium, but "we lose more sodium than potassium [when we exercise] and coconut water cannot really replace it," says Sue Baic, a registered dietician and nutritionist. "There doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence to support claims for sports recovery."

So coconut water contains some important vitamins and minerals, and natural sugars as opposed to refined ones. It won't give you the body of Rihanna or compensate for an otherwise unhealthy diet, but if you like its distinctive, slightly sour taste then follow the advice of nutritionists and enjoy it in small quantities. It's certainly better for you than a fizzy drink.

  1. It might sound crazy and weird according to some Indonesians but I DON’T like young coconut water very much. I prefer the old coconut water or the coconut milk. For me it is sour and tastes like it is not ready to consume (which it actually is!). Nevertheless, I heard, that young Indonesian mothers drink it since it is said, that it makes the babies’ skin smoother and whiter. Also, I heard that you can use it if you have a sun-burn and spread it on your skin, because it cools the affected skin down and the minerals contained help to heal the damaged skin-parts to recover. I don’t know if those statements have been proven but I doubt it for the first one.
Quotation: “[…] making it perfect to drink after exercise“
In my opinion it’s just another hype about a new detected product or ingredient like so many before. In this article I just miss Victoria Beckham saying it was the perfect drink to make her look young and fresh and she has been using it for years already.

    1. I totally get how you feel towards not liking young coconut water, I never liked it much either. I only drink it, if it's mixed with fruit punch or the sort. Which is usually served at Ramadan as a dessert. I can never withstand it's individual taste, of overwhelming fluidity and sour after taste.

As for the perks of drinking coconut water, I've heard a lot of them. Mainly because I'm the only one in my family who rarely drinks it, I get all the nagging of how good it's supposed to be. So yeah, I think that coconut water has a lot of benefits, whether it has been scientifically proven or not. It is a healthy drink one we shouldn't ignore, but don't over rely on it, because it can't compensate for all the bodies needs in nutrition.

From the article above, I saw that the only contra to not drinking coconut water was because "It wasn't all it said to be". I disagree if people stop drinking because of that. They are forgetting the positive side of it. So the world might have exaggerated a bit on it's benefits, who wouldn't? it's a newly found product, and we would expect companies around the world fighting for the dominance in controlling it's market power, hence creating a lot of advertisement and articles of the "not so long ago" newly found drinking product.

  2. There are two types of coconut, ripe coconut which is the brown one and young coconut which is the green one. In Indonesia coconut used in so many delicacies especially food from Sumatra use a lot of coconut milk or many Indonesian call it santan. I agree with petra statement about the taste of young coconut, it is sour and a bit bitter sometime. Green or young coconut are consume as a traditional medicine for diarrhea , fever , to increase stamina for sick people and many more so it is not for day to day drinks but some people consume it even though he/she is not sick. Not only coconut milk, water ,and meat that can be consume, Coconut oil can be consume also as a day to day supplement and you can use it to cure burn skin also , coconut oil can be found in many drugstore nowadays and the most popular brand is VCO.

  3. Actually the thing that first attracted my attention was the coconut photo in this article. Just a simple photo but it’s already contains several elements of a good photo and the background, the beach, made me wonder what beach is it because it looked like one of the beach in Jogja.

Well, for coconut water, I think everybody like to drink coconut water. I’ve liked to drink it since I was kid. It used to be a little hard to find coconut water back then, not like today that you just need to go to a minimarket around the house and will find it easily there. We used to need to go to coconut’s seller or traditional market or go to beach to get coconut water. Therefore it gave me its own satisfaction when I got coconut water to drink back then. Luckily, there are some companies those see this need-coconut water-provider as opportunity and thanks to them for the easiness now.

Drinking coconut water isn’t just giving me usual satisfaction like after I drink mineral water when I feel thirsty but also a special freshness from the coconut water’s typical taste. Even though coconut water that now easy to get is not the fresh coconut water, but still it’s better to drink coconut water rather than to drink artificial-instant drinks.

  4. Like Bintang already said , there are two kind of coconut as i know too. The ripe coconut and young coconut.
The ripe coconut is usually for 'santan' or we can say it 'coconut milk' and also we can use the shell, it's called 'batok kelapa', to make some accessories. Some foreigner really like the accessories from coconut shell. I like it too. You can make it into belt, necklace, and many more. The coconut milk, you can make some delicious food with it. For example, you can make 'rendang', 'gulai',etc. Also you can make some beverages from coconut mill, for example: 'es teller', 'dawet', 'kolak', and many more
The young coconut is usually for beverages. We can find it a lot in some beaches. I really like young coconut. You should mix it with liquid palm sugar or with cocopandan syrup. It freshen up, especially in hot weather.
Nowadays, we can also find coconut oil which is healthier than oil palm. My family is also using it. We also can drink it directly for our health.

  5. Many people drink coconut water because there are myths going around about coconut water is an ideal post-exercise drink and hydrates you better than H20, but apparently coconut water is overrated. Because the myths are just myths and not factual.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with coconut water. It's totally fine, while it is true that coconut water contained plenty of sodium-- sodium is an important electrolyte for people who are training for a sport, or are consistently active outside in hot temperatures--, but it's probably not enough calories after a really hard workout. Balancing protein, fat, and carbs after a workout is the most important. You get electrolytes from the food you eat; it doesn't need to come in liquid form.

The average person does not need to drink electrolytes anyway because, most people get more than enough sodium in their diets and there's no need to replenish it.

The moral of the story: If you love coconut water for the taste, go for it.

  6. Coconuts, when I am thinking about coconuts I think about my time in Bali. Before school started I went with two friends of my to Bali. In Lovina I drunk my first coconut. It was fun to see how the Indonesian guy climbed up in the coconut tree, pretending like he is a monkey, to get some coconuts for us.

After drinking the coconut, I came to the conclusion that I don’t like coconuts that much; the taste of the coconut is nothing special. It was soft with a weird aftertaste. But about the part that coconuts are good to drink during sport exercises, I never had heard before. In my country (The Netherlands) I neither have seen a sport drink with the flavor of coconuts. The only thing that the Indonesian guy was telling in Bali was when you eat the inside of the coconut; it will be good for your sex life.

  7. I do not really like coconut water. The taste does not suit my tongue. But I have heard and read that coconut has many values especially when we do exercise. Coconut water is the most appropriate beverage to drink. Because it has an isotonic than can replace minerals lost through sweat. It also can neutralize toxins in the body and cleanse the digestive tract. But do not too much to drink it because it can make you get diarrhea.
Usually, green coconut water is still young and has a sweeter taste refreshing when compared to the old, why? Because of the sugar content in young coconut 2% higher than the old oil. That is why mostly people sell the young one to drink and use the old one to be a cook seasoning.
Someone tell me that we can making traditional stamina enhancing drugs by mixing coconut water with honey. The herb is proven to be safe and do not cause side effects. But actually I never try it before.

  8. In my experience when I was in senior high school, my private biology teacher told me that when we feeling exhausted, the most natural way to be fresh again is simply drink coconut water. But she suggest me to buy the native fruit one rather than the instant coconut water in supermarket.
I really ever prove that, is that true or just a theory. One day I feel so tired after get some practice in school, after that I thinking to buy a coconut water near my house. After I drink that I really feel very fresh, and from me I agree that coconut water is really good to refresh our mind.
But you should remember that the young coconut water is different with mature coconut water. This is not just because the pulp become hard and not soft anymore as before but this is because the chemical such as potassium and some vitamins was gone. In traditional food we often utilize old coconut to make "santen", and the coconut water became useless.

  9. Coconut water is one of my favorite drink. I don't even know why, but I like the instant one (the one which we buy in the supermarket) rather than the traditional one. If I drink it directly from the coconut, I won't drink the fruit flesh and only drink the water. I think that the reason why I like coconut water is because it's not too sweet and I think that somehow it makes me feel refreshed. Low in calories, naturally-fat, and cholesterol free. It also contain more potassium than four bananas and super hydrating, are just the advantages of coconut water from the other drinks. It also has fewer calories, less sodium, and more potassium than sports drinks. Coconut water can also be fermented to make coconut vinegar and Nata de Coco which is my favorite jelly in many kinds of drinks. Nata de Coco is sweet and fluffy and I think the texture is the best for jelly.

  10. Coconut water is also one of my favorite drinks. Not only me but lots of people love it too, especially after they get tired from exercise or playing sport. Maybe because it has the sweet and nutty taste. Its not only because of the taste that people like it but its also the values that the coconut water has. Some fact say, coconut water is better than sugary and sports drinks. Coconut water has less sugar than many sportdrinks and much less sugar than sodas and some fruit juices. They also are natural beverage with no artificial additives. Thats why plain coconut water could be a better choice for adults and kids for a beverage that is less sweet. But I think its not a good idea if you overdo it, because if you drink several in one day, the calories could add up quickly. Thats a worrying thing for people who wants to get a diet. So, its better if you drink it in a appopriate way.

  11. I never tasted coconut water before we went here. The first time I tried it was when we were in Karimunjawa, it looks so delicious and fresh. When i tried it i was actually a bit disappointed, it looks so much better then it tastes. The coconut water didn't really taste that much, but it was something with the taste that I didn't really like. It was also a lot of sugar in the bottom, maybe it would taste better without. I liked the meat that was inside although it didn't taste much either. We also use coconut for cooking in Norway, but then we mostly use just the coconut milk. I don't use it that often, but I heard it's healthy. I could use it more often if it wasn't that expensive, sometimes when you're a student you have to take the cheapest alternative. I didn't know that it was good if you work out a lot; maybe I should learn to like it.

  12. Quotation: "The only thing that the Indonesian guy was telling in Bali was when you eat the inside of the coconut; it will be good for your sex life." Well, if that's true, I guess I'll be taking a lot of coconuts before I head out to Sarkem.

Anyway, I've once had a pretty scary experience concerning coconuts. Freshly picked coconuts are usually cut open using a machete by someone who is familiar with the device; let's call this someone Mamang. Fascinated with Mamang's expert machete skills, I requested him to lend me his machete so that I could imitate his insane skills. Mamang first refused to hand it to me, but he eventually handed it to me after I insisted. With a doubtful look on his face, he gave it reluctantly. Needless to say I nearly lost my hand that day.

Moving on to the topic. I think it's a known fact that many Indonesians find coconut water to be a great thirst quencher, although some might find the taste quite displeasing. Maybe that's where all the claims originate? Maybe some people randomly come up with benefits of consuming coconut water just for the sake of persuading others to drink it too? I think it's pretty plausible.

  13. Coconut, I think it’s not only the fruit that is beneficial for human but also the trees many people in Indonesia say that coconut tree is useful from its roots up until its fruit. Let’s start from its roots, it can be used for medicine or to dye stuff, the trunk can be used to build a house, the leaves can be used as roofing for buildings, and the fruit itself can be consumed and the shell can be used as a charcoal.
Now about the debate in the article what I know about coconut water is that it can be used for a diet (some say), for cooking, and for drinking. That’s what I know about coconut water, actually I don’t really care about either it has been scientifically proven or not. What I do care about is that as long as it can be consumed and not making any damage to the body it’s all fine for me.

  14. Don’t really know that much about coconut. Don’t even know how to make a difference between the good one and not. Quite often consume it when I’m in restaurant, because when you’re ordered in restaurant they will add some sugar or milk in it. I like it much that way, for me a simple coconut water not giving a special feeling when you sip it. The water itself at least has to be cold so I always make sure that they use ice on it. Because when you drink it from the coconut fruit itself it doesn’t have a really good taste, more like tasteless.
But beside that, I know that coconut can be used for many purposes. Like coconut milk that can use for cooking ingredients. We called it “santen” in bahasa. The water itself even thou it’s tasteless have many benefits. Even the coconut waste can be use for coal.

  15. Personally I like a young coconut water very much. I consume it mostly when I feel so thirsty after doing a hard exercise such as playing basket or soccer, coconut water bring me a lot of energy that can recharge my energy quickly. Coconut can maintain your body hydration at a good rate so you can feel fresh and healthy and I like it because it contains lot of vitamin and mineral which is good for my body. I consuming both of coconut types I call it the brown one and the green one. When I drinking the brown one I often add some sugar to gives a sweet taste to my drink, but when I drink the green one I never add any sugar because I heard that green coconut water can act as antioxidant for your body which can neutralized toxin in your body so when I got allergic by something I prefer to drink coconut water instead consuming medicine.

  16. Coconuts, I don’t know that much about them, and that it is becoming a sport drink is totally new to me. You see it way more often that people don’t drink water during sports, but they are more likely to drink sport drinks or other drinks that contain a high level of sugar. I am not an expert on this, but I think it is important to get your sugars in a natural way and not by drinking these sugar taste sport drinks. That’s why I always drink water when I do sports. Marketeers always try to fool you in some kind of way that you will think the drinks will improve your performances or are good for you. I think it is important to be very careful in believing this. I knew a guy who drank energy drinks as a substitute for all other drinks. He went to the doctor after he got some physical complains. The doctor strongly recommended him not to drink any energy drinks in the future, otherwise he would be paralysed within 2 years…Sounds creepy but just don’t believe everything the marketeers tell you.

  17. As mentioned in the passage, coconut water can refresh the body after having physical exercise since it contains potassium which can hydrate body. Coconut water is low of sugar also so we can consume coconut water without worrying the cause of taking too much sugar (diabetes). It also make coconut water still juicy, yummy to drink whether served with ice or not because the contains of salt balancing the amount of sugar, and because of salt, many people feel refreshed after consuming coconut water, moreover served with ice. Coconut water' works is same as isotonic water. Since the ions is present there, the ions will replace the loss ions on body because of exhaust or sweating. However, not everybody can consume coconut water as much as they want.
"Indeed, the marketing of coconut water as wonder tonic and natural sports drink has been somewhat overplayed.
I agree with this statement since I have read it before on somewhere's blog, but there is stilk no evidence about it.

  18. Coconut water contains many vitamins and mineral and it's also jam packed with many benefits, the most popular belief of Indonesian people for the coconut water, especially young coconut is that it can cure almost every disease there is. I'm not sure if it's make believe or is it really cracked up to be or not, but my experience with coconut water is that I was having chicken pox, and my dad bought me coconut water to drink for like a week or so then my chicken pox was all better without any other medicine; the other occurrence was when I got food poisoned because I ate something that was going to go bad, then, again, my dad told me to drink coconut water and with some rest, I was all better within a couple of days.
For the sports drink, coconut water is the hype for sports drinks nowadays, replacing all of those fizzy and bubbly drink that are advertised to be oh-so-healthy when in fact it's not, and it's really taking a lead in the market, for coconut water is more natural than all of those chemical filled drinks.

  19. Coconuts. I actually love the young coconuts so much. Back in my previous town, there were young coconuts sellers in front of my school. I liked to buy it after my school finished. I could have the original coconut or I could add some sugars and syrups. It was really taste good. But, I would prefer the original young coconut, without adding sugars or syrups. Because, I actually love the taste of pure young coconut. I think coconuts have many advantages; starts from its fruits, trees, and leafs. Both young and old coconuts are used; they usually used for foods. In my family, young coconut water also used for medicine to heal measles and fever. For old coconut, we know that usually it used to make “santan” or coconut milk. I’ve heard about coconut water for sport drink. I also proved that it’s really felt good to consume coconut water after doing sports. However, I don’t really think it’s good to consume really often. Because, I think it’s better for us to consume mineral water than sport drinks. Just like what BASvdBAN mentioned before about case of someone who drinks energy drink, which sounds really creepy.

  20. This article talks about the benefit of coconut water and I find the information in this article is particularly useful. Many athletes use coconut water as sugar spike to boost their energy before practice or competition. Drinking coconut water is much healthier than drinking other sugary drinks such as soda. As such I think it is very smart for Beverage Company to commercialize coconut water and make it very convenient for the consumer. Recently, Indonesia releases a coconut water packaged drink called Hydrococo and so far it has been very successful in meeting Indonesia’s demand. I personally love coconut water's taste but knowing that it has a lot of benefit is such a bonus. Moreover other parts of the coconut trees are also very useful. Firstly the leaves of the coconut trees can be used as a shelter, as well as to make broomstick. As for the husk of the coconut, it can be used as charcoal replacement. Not forgetting the coconut milk, which is often one of the main ingredients on most delicious Indonesian dish.

  21. Actually I do love drinking young coconut water right away from the fruit. Specially when the flesh is still smooth and chewy. You don’t have to put any sugar in it, because it already tastes slightly sweet. It will be more delicious if you drink it when the weather is reaching at about 30degrees or more. Infact, we can still get some benefit from old coconuts. We can grate the old coconut’s flesh, and add it with a little bit of water, then squeeze it down through a sift. Tadaaa you will have santan or coconut milk which you can use to cook some delicious Indonesian traditional food which require santan in their ingredients, such as rendang, gulai, laksa, and many more. But you can not eat santan-contained food too much, because it is not good for our health. It can raise our LDL cholesterol (which is considered as one of the cause of heart and other organs problems) way high and high if we consume it too much.

  23. I used to hear a nice quote from my father about coconut “Coconut is came from heaven because no matter young or old the fruit, coconut is still can be used”.
I do agree with him because when coconut is still young we could turn the water and flesh as an invigorating beverages and when we burn the young coconut when the water is still inside we could use it as a traditional medication to reduce the risk of stroke for people with high blood pressure. The old coconut can be used as an ingredient of authentic delicacies by grating the coconut and squeeze it until the last drop of the juice which we know it as coconut milk. After we extract everything from coconut we could shred the dried shell to become a coconut fiber and use it as a substitute of charcoal. Not only the water and the skin that we could use, coconut oil can be used as a cure to sunburned skin or consume it daily as a supplement

  24. I like coconut water very much; well for me it’s one of my favorite drinks. It is so fresh and makes you want to drink again and again. I agree that coconut water contains a lot of vitamins and minerals but coconut water can cure some of your health problem. In West Java, people in there believe that coconut water can cure a headache or stomached. When I heard that coconut water could cure sickness I don’t believe it at all but after I try it for the first time it worked! I don’t know how it can cure it but for sure it worked. However some people believe that coconut water is like a booster drink before you do some exercise but the truth is, it’s not. Scientist recommends that we should not drink coconut water before doing some exercise because it will loosen up our muscle. So, it will not make us stronger but weaker. Coconut water should be consumed after doing some exercise not before. After doing some exercise our muscle will become more tense then coconut water will loosen up those muscle so our body will become more relax therefore we can rest comfortably.

  25. In my hometown coconut water is one of the famous drinks and I think everybody loves it. I can find it easily in every restaurant, especially seafood or grill restaurant. Maybe because there are a bunch of coconut trees in my hometown. Sometimes I drink coconut water from coconut tree in front of my friend's house. I enjoy drink coconut water very much. It's fresh and it's already sweet without sugar. Well I don't think that coconut water is a perfect drink after doing some sports, but I agree that coconut water is a healthy drink. In second grade, I'm allergic to cold temperature and if I'm in a place with cold temperature, the small bumps will appear in my body. So, my friend told me to drink coconut water to remove the small bumps. I follow her advice and buy coconut water. After I drink it, the small bumps gradually disappear. Since that I always drink coconut water if it happens again. That's why I believe coconut water is a healthy drink contained many vitamins and minerals.

  26. Talking about coconut, it reminds me of a fruit which contains many benefits to our body. Like Bintang and Yuka already explained, there are two kinds of coconut: the ripe and the young one. The ripe one used for coconut milk, or oil. In Indonesia, on celebration days like Idul Fitri and Idul Adha, the people love to make many foods which contain coconut milk or ‘santan’. In my family, those celebration days won’t be complete without foods that contain ‘santan’. Eventhough we know that consuming too much ‘santan’ won’t be good to our body because it will cause disease such as cholesterol.
When my grandma was young, she often made coconut oil from the ripe coconut. She said that coconut oil is good for your hair because it will nourish your hair well. It also has another function. In my family, whenever someone got fever, my mom or my grandma will make a mixture of coconut oil and lime’s juice. It will heal the fever in couple days.
What I have mentioned above is just some of advantages that a coconut has. It’s shown that its existence brings many advantages to human being.

  27. I love coconut water so much! Actually it’s really common in Indonesia to drink coconut water, I often find young coconut water sold at roadsides. Here in Indonesia, when it’s Ramadhan (a month of fasting for moeslims) we usually drink young coconut water after fasting break time because it freshens up our dry throat, it has good nutritions to hydrate and strengthens our body. I heard from my mom that it’s also good for women. I forgot how it works to women’s body but all I remember that it’s good for them. It’s also used to neutralize the liquids in our body so when we feel queasy, it’s good to drink young coconut water so that’s why it’s often used to reduce hangover. We, Indonesians, are so lucky to have coconuts everywhere because some countries don’t have it yet they need it so much. I’m so lucky I can drink the fresh young coconut water. I think it’s much better than the packed coconut water that’s sold to some continents.

  28. This article is very interesting, this article give new information to me. I just realize that coconut water have many of beneficial substances, like Dana James said that coconut water has potassium which enhances the body's ability to hydrate, making it perfect to drink after exercise. Coconut water also become a hangover remedy. To get green coconut is very easy in Indonesia, because Indonesia is tropical county where coconut trees grow rapidly. Sometime, pregnant people drink it because good for pregnancy. People in diet usually drink coconut water for their energy drink, but it’s all wrong because Coconut water contains no calories, so should not be substituted for water or other low-calorie drinks when trying to lose weight.

Coconut water contains some important vitamins and minerals, and natural sugars so many companies all over the country make beverage packaging based on the coconut water. In the article said that companies which is sell this drink Have a big profit. So for people who enjoy drinking soda should stop because it can replace with coconut water which is healthier.

  29. Coconut water is indeed consumable and even favourable by many people. It has been the drink I
ordered every time it is available in a restaurant. Other than its fresh and delicious taste, coconut water also healthy for your body; some researchers believe it could maintain your tender skin which is one of the things women wanted the most. If you drink it straight from the coconut fruit, you can also carve the coconut’s meat from inside the fruit and feel the tingling sensation of it. If you ask me, I can’t really say whether the taste is sweet or bitter, it tastes different but makes me pump for more. Moreover; coconut water nowadays also available in instant packaging, although I doubt it would taste the same with the fresh one, it could still be an alternative way of enjoying it. Many comments before me have mentioned that young or green coconut could cure many diseases, ranging from stomachache; diarrhea; headache; high fever; etc. I agree with them because young coconut contains minerals such as potassium, magnesium, zinc, anti-oxidant, and many more positive ions in which they help your body to recover quickly from such diseases.

  30. Yes, we already know that many people like to drink coconut water, especially Indonesians and other tropical countries’ people. I heard that coconut water also can heal or absorb poison, if we are poisoned. My parents told me that I can’t drink coconut water if I am still taking medicines. Maybe it’s because coconut water can absorb the medicine or somehow it resists the medicine, I don’t really understand about it and don’t know whether it is just a myth or science-based statement.
Before reading this article, I didn’t know that coconut water has so many benefits for us, like the potassium and natural sugar in it. And before i read this article, I was wondering why a factory produces beverages from coconut water and groups them in natural sport drinks section . But, then I know that coconut water contains many nutrition that is useful for refreshing our body after exercising.

  31. Coconut water is tastes like heaven. It gives me a unique and fresh sensation after I drink it. I really love it so much. The young coconut flesh tastes nice, too. The combination of both is really suits me. One day when I walked around on a beach in Bengkalis, I found it is so delicious and freshen me up because I drunk it after I took a walk about two hours. Moreover, if you add some ice on it, it tastes really fresh. I think the vitamin and mineral contained on the coconut water has been proved because it really boosts my energy every time I drink coconut water.

I never drink the instant one, but now I'm really curious about it. Because I usually choose instant drink such as yogurt and milk instead of coconut water or other energy drink. But really, I feel like I'm craving for coconut water while writing this comment. I instantly want it so bad now, Sir! Maybe I am going to buy it every time I feel exhausted or tired. Thank you for the article, Sir.

  32. Actually, I like coconut, especially because I like the taste and the freshness of its water. The only thing that I hate about a coconut is the difficulties to open and get the coconut flesh from the wall inside the coconut. So, if I bought a coconut, usually I ask the seller to open the coconut and peel the flesh and put them in a glass.
After reading this article, I realize that coconut water is overrated. It is true that coconut contain electrolyte that needed to recover the body condition after having workout or some exercises. But, it doesn’t contain much fat, protein and other important nutrition that also needed to recover the body. But, it doesn’t make me want to stop drinking coconut water because I believe even it is overrated, it still bring some benefit to me. Other than that, the coconut flesh also contain a lot of fiber and medium chained fat which is good for our digestion process and reduce the LDL cholesterol.

  33. Coconut water tastes better than mineral water and it is good to replace the energy that we use after sport. Of course it contains calories unlike the mineral water we drink every day. In Europe, coconut water is not very common unlike in other tropical countries. We cannot drink the coconut water just like drinking the mineral water, but it is good for our health. If we drink it every once in a while maybe after we do some sports or in a very hot day just like these past few days it will be good for our health. It also can be used for hangover remedy as well as orange juice. We are so lucky that we live in a tropical country that we can drink the fresh coconut water that is obviously tastes better than the packaged one. Some businesses give adding value to the raw materials to gain its value in market.

  34. I rarely drink coconut water and I’m picky in buying coconut water. My dad usually buys coconut water on Monjali Street near a burger shop. In my opinion that is the only place I trusted because their coconut water always tasted sweet and not sour. I personally don’t like to drink other beverage other than mineral water after doing some sports. Coconut water contains sodium as much as is in a banana. Well, after knowing the facts, I prefer to drink water and eat banana to regain my energy back. The reason why I prefer to drink mineral water is because coconut water is expensive. Even for the foreign country, it’s still expensive because they need to import the coconut to produce coconut drink. People dehydrated because in my opinion they are lack of water in their body. And to make the body hydrated, people need to drink mineral water which is easy to find.

  35. Talking about coconut water remind me of my beloved hometown. I live in coastal area and there are so many coconut sellers everywhere, especially in the beach. And I used to drink coconut water since I was a kid. Until now, coconut water is my favorite drink because the taste is amazing and the texture of the young coconut itself is so delicious. My mother always tells me about the benefit of coconut water. They’re low in calories, naturally-fat, and cholesterol free. It also contains more potassium than four bananas and super hydrating.
Coconut tree is useful for top to root. We can use the leaves for roof, the trunk for build a traditional house, and the fruit itself can be consumed. The ripe coconut is used for cooking and the young coconut can be used for a very delicious drink. I love to eat young coconut right from the fruit and drink the coconut water without any sugar addition or syrup. I will keep drinking coconut water not only for satisfaction but also for my own health.

  36. Coconut water, most of Indonesians are not that unfamiliar with this drink. Coconut water in Indonesia is usually served with coconut flesh, sweet condensed milk and ice. Coconut water is known to have some important vitamins and minerals. A few years ago, there’s a coconut water booming. There are many new products of coconut water that we can still see now at the supermarket. It is well known as something that can replace our body’s fluid loss.
Many of coconut water products that I’ve ever tasted are different with the original coconut water directly from the coconut. There are some brands that offer coconut water, but when you taste it, it’s actually very different with the original one. The instant one is usually sweeter and has some weird taste that I can’t explain, but it’s still nice to drink. Meanwhile the original one tastes fresher, have a balanced level of sugar and have this ‘relaxing’ effect.

  37. It kind of reminds me of a song called "The Coconut" by Harry Nilsson. There some lyrics " I said "doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take?""Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take?" I said "Doctor, to relieve this belly ache."Now lemme get this straight. You put the lime in the coconut, you drank 'em bot' up". So I think it is true that coconut water have a lot of use. To relieve stomach-ache is one of them. I also know from someone that it could also used by the military to heal them from a poisoning, or simply a dehydration. Well now that i said it, i think not just the military though. The fisherman also use it to heal a stung from a jellyfish. Other than that, the fact that coconut water have a lot of vitamins and minerals, I think it's a pleasure with no guilt. A refreshing beverages to rehydrate. Thank you

  38. I like to drink coconut water a lot since I was a kid, only and simply because it tastes pretty good. A lot of people think that coconut water is really a refreshing drink. It’s suitable to drink the coconut water in a sunny day. It is sold a lot now in every part of the city, so you will not hardly look for it. I suggest you to order a freshly whole coconut, so you can combine and taste both coconut water and coconut flesh. But, according to the article, that some nutritionists doubt the value of coconut water as a post-exercise drink. I think it is really reasonable, because they say that coconut water contains more potassium than sodium, but we lose more sodium than potassium when we exercise and coconut water cannot really replace it. I think the marketing of coconut water shouldn’t say that coconut water can replace every substance that lose in our body from exercising, but they can say that it will gain our energy from exercising because of coconut water’s freshness and great taste.

  39. Pure coconut water. Did you know that drinking a pure coconut water once a day, could help you get away from sickness?

My parents start giving my family a hardcore coconut drinking campaign. Every day in the morning, we are asked to drink a liter of pure coconut water. It is said that the coconut water could give you more energy to start the day, and could drive away sickness. And after consuming it for about one week, I think it is true. Because after consuming the coconut, my family looks like having more energy than before.

I asked my parents why they want us to drink pure coconut water every day. My parents told me that it is one of the tips my grandparents told to my parents, in keeping a healthy life. My grandmother could survive living for about 20 years, with only 1 kidney with these tips. It is really amazing how some coconut water could improve your life so much!

  40. Coconut water, the traditional yet so common and found in many countries have so many positive effects for the body. It is said that coconut water could help the body to neutrilize toxin, so its not rare seeing people who are sick drinking a lot of coconut water. Coconut water also could help making our blood clean, I often heard that people who drinks a lot of alcohol and going to have a blood test will drink a lot of coconut water everyday to pass the blood test. For me I prefer coconut water fresh from the coconut itself, but it costs more than buying a package of vita coco. Coconut water also have so many forms like Nata de Coco which is coconut water but shaped like jelly but a bit harder to chew, usually it mixed with jelly. Indeed coconut water have so many usage that give benefits for our health. Fortunately nowadays we can found a lot of products that contain 100% coconut water, so don’t say “save water drink beer” start drink coconut water.

  41. Coconut has many advantages. The water can help the person who is in dehydration condition not dehydrating anymore. The water of coconut also makes our blood cleaner than before. It has many functions. There was someone told that the coconut water is magic water because it can medicate much kind of diseases. When I was in elementary school, I usually got my nose-bleeding easily; my grandmother said that I have to drink coconut water regularly until my condition gets better. And wow I was surprised that my grandmother’s advice was true. If I regularly drink coconut water, so I prevent the dehydration in my body, and it means I prevent the nose-bleeding. Yeah these days we can easily found the product of coconut water that wrapped in bottles or cups. I think the kind of that coconut water is not healthy, because it has combined with chemical extract that very dangerous with for health

  42. I like coconut water. And, yes, I do feel better after drink coconut water. I think most people will agree with this argument. Today’s technologies made the coconut water easier to get. You don’t need to find coconut and open it by yourself.
Coconut water has its place in traditional and modern place, mostly used for medicine and promoted as healthy drink. Research found that coconut water has a high potassium content and contains antioxidants. It also has cytokines, helping cell division and growth. Coconut water has ability to neutralize toxic in body. Latest offering promote coconut water as refreshment water, because it has natural ion that easily absorbed by human body.
“Indeed, the marketing of coconut water as wonder tonic and natural sports drink has been somewhat overplayed.” I agree with this argument. Coconut water has its natural benefit for our health, but the promotion of this product is overhyped. This drink alone wouldn’t make you healthier. It isn’t all-in-one nutritional drink, you still need to drink water and consume another nutrition. And most offered coconut water now are industry-produced, which means it wasn’t that natural. Is that offer still healthy? I don’t think so.

  43. According to my knowledge, coconut water is the best drink you could ever have after doing some sports or exercises. In this article they said that coconut drink does help people to hydrate, and I agree with that. What is new for me is about the lack of sodium in coconut water. I never thought about it at all, but I do agree that coconut water is not the cure-all it's cracked up to be.

In my personal opinion, I love coconut water. Hell, I would replace the all mineral water I drink with coconut water if I could. Not only that coconut water is healthy, but it is also delicious. The unique aroma of coconut and the bit of sugar are irresistible. They could say that coconut water isn’t that healthy, but it’s better to drink it rather than not, doesn’t it? We could replace the sodium in what we eat, so no sweat.

  44. Coconut water for me is the most refreshing drink in this world, I remember when I was a kid I used to climb the coconut tree in my garden, I took the coconut and eat the flesh, I loved the coconut water very much it is very refreshing and taste nice. I am not really sure that coconut have that many uses, but I believe that coconut water help us as a hydrate drink, I can feel the fresh feeling after drink the coconut water. Many people said that coconut also used for make our skin shiny, I don’t believe that coconut make our skin shiny, there is no scientific reason why the coconut make our skin shiny. And other said that coconut also used for weight loss program, I believe this because I know that coconut water is contain 0 calorie, but if you eat the coconut with the flesh, coconut will not reduce your weight.

  45. People usually drink coconut water to neutralize ions and chemical substances inside the body. And pregnant mothers are advised to also drink coconut water by their gynecologist. Its richness and pureness is proved by science, good for our health.

Coconut water can also be used for making food, and in my hometown Aceh, we usually use “santan” or coconut milk to make delicious rendang, etc. But coconut water is usually consumed as beverages.

Athletes tend to drink coconut water in order to refresh their bodies and gain stamina, because coconut water consists of proteins, minerals, a little bit of fats, and sugar. It also has anti-bacteria and anti-virus substance which make coconut water good for our immunity. Moreover, it can also be used for digestion problem treatments.

Many products are made of coconut water, such as energy drink, syrup, and jelly, which are tasty, but also good for your body.

  46. I think that With coconut water you may officially forget about coffee and other energy drinks containing high levels of caffeine. At only 50 calories per cup, coconut water will give you an enormous energy boost, the natural way. And that is just one of its many-many benefits. That is why people drink it all over the world. Now that you definitely have it right, it is time to find out what coconut water has to offer. First of all, coconut water hydrates us even better than ordinary drinking water. Because of that property it is recommended for people that live in hot countries, do a lot of physical work or have has an infection or poisoning that resulted in diarrhea or vomiting (that leaves them quite dehydrated as a result). Fun fact: during the Pacific War, coconut water was used in IVs and plasma transfusions, to save many lives. Turns out that the contents of natural coconut water are identical to that in human plasma, making it a kind of “universal donor”! It is still used that way in countries that have limited access to medical aid.
Coconut water is rich in dietary fiber, enzymes, vitamin C, minerals (such as magnesium and potassium) and amino acids. But at the same time it is low in calories, chlorides and cholesterol. These properties make it useful for people trying to loose weight (by speeding up their metabolism and creating a feeling of fullness). By applying coconut water directly on your skin, you will keep it hydrated and balance its pH levels, leading to reduced acne, less visible signs of ageing, stretch marks, and cellulite and even treat eczema. Drinking coconut water will also help boost your immune system and fight the symptoms of the common cold and flu; keep your cardiovascular health in top shape and aid the kidneys in filtering the toxins and thus reducing the risk of kidney stones.

  47. I am not a big fan of coconuts, because for me it tastes sour and weird which is why I don’t really get it on how people crave coconut water so much. The only coconut water that I deems edible is HydroCoco. It’s a brand of packaged coconut water from Indonesia by Kalbe Farma. Back then in my high school days, I dealt with HydroCoco as one of the sponsors for our sports event. Since then I learned the benefits of coconut water for your body, even more beneficial than drinking mineral water. It acts as an antioxidant, helps the digestive system, and replaces the loss of bodily fluid. However, despite of all the positive effects of coconut water, I still prefer mineral water more to help me hydrated. I don’t really like sweet drinks, and after exercising I never craved for anything else than mineral water. Also, I think that it would take time for people in every parts of the world to prefer coconut water than mineral water because not everyone can get used to the taste of it.

  48. I’m a big fan of coconut water, especially the young one; is a very refreshing drink to beat tropical summer thirst. If I am going to the beach or seafood restaurant, I will order young coconut water, even the tastes is sour and a bit bitter sometime or Tastes like sweat, but I like it. So when I order it, sometimes I order with additional red syrup.
Young coconut water is very good to replace our energy, that’s why a glass of coconut water called “hydro coco” is very good for us. After having some physical or hard exercise, a glass of hydro coco will replace our energy quickly because it contain a lot of sugars, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, enzymes, amino acids, cytokine, and phyto hormones.
Coconut water can cure some diseases; another article mentioned that Coconut water has been generally offered to patients with diarrhoea in many tropic regions to replace the fluid loss, because it contains a very great amount of electrolyte potassium.

  49. Honestly, I don’t like to drink coconut water; it tastes odd. I don’t know why a lot of people like to drink it. Coconut water is also one of my family’s favorite drinks, except me. It is much better to drink mineral water than coconut water.
However, many people talks about the super benefit of coconut water. It has much nutrition, and absolutely it is good for the health of human. When my father got a dengue fever, his thrombocyte fell down to a low level. At that time, my sibling asked him to drink coconut water. After drinking it regularly, his thrombocyte can increase again. I think this case can represent the huge usage of drinking coconut water, although I think it is not delicious.
Moreover, not only the water can be beneficial for human’s life, but the whole coconut tree also very useful for human’s life. The root can be used in making broom. The rod can help to build a house, and the leaves for the ceiling of the traditional house.

  50. Besides the undeniable fresh taste of it, coconut water is so healthy. It contains a lot IONS and minerals such as phosphor, glucose, fructose, sucrose, and iron that give good impacts for us. Coconut water can reduce bad cholestrol, neutralize toxins in our body, lighten our skin, maintain the body’s digestive and so on. Another common one people know is coconut water could instantly help to boost up energy. Unlike my mother, coconut water is not my cup of tea. However, drink the cold one that has been mixed with milk or brown sugar in a hot sunny day is a great choice. When I was a little kid, my grandfather owns couples of coconut trees in his field. Therefore, I can always ask for a coconut whenever I want. I remember the moment I exposed an itchy caterpillars at his house and he immediately gave me a coconut water. In few minutes, the bumps all over my skin resulted from the toxins were gone.

  51. I love coconut water but not coconut milk. You could drink the young coconut water directly from the fruit or pour it in a glass. On a hot and sunny day, a glass of it will quench your thirst and re-energise you, with all those minerals it contains in the water. That is why these days numbers of sport drinks are using coconut water as the main ingredients.
Most of the time coconut milk is used for cooking. You could extract coconut milk from older coconut fruit. Coconut milk has a unique flavour, thus it adds richness in terms of flavour to the dishes. Or you could drink it directly, like most traditional drinks in Java, it is also believed to quench your thirst on a sunny day.
“People drink it as a hangover remedy … to enhance hydration” I always thought it was only a myth. I also heard that it could help your body to detoxify all the alcohols inside your body.

  52. Coconut is one kind of fruits that contains many benefits to our body. As I know, coconut water is very useful. The young coconut (which is the green coconut) contains coconut water that contains some important vitamins, minerals, and also natural sugars. Many people say that you should drink coconut water after doing a long activity or exercise to recover your body and to prevent the hydration.

According to the article, coconut water doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence to support claims for sports recovery. But I think, there’s nothing wrong with the coconut water. Coconut water is still contains plenty of sodium- sodium is an important electrolyte for people who are training for a sport, or are consistently active outside in hot temperature. For example, in Ramadhan, Muslims are fasting for a month; they don’t eat and drink for about more than 12 hours. Sometimes, many people when the break (the fast) time comes, they choose to drink coconut water. Because coconut water has vitamins and minerals that can help to recover their body and prevent the hydration from one day fasting.

  53. Reading the title of this article “Coconut water: all it’s cracked up to be?” spontaneously make me remembered with advertisement on tv and claim it’s product as the first natural isotonic drinks in Indonesia made from young coconut, which is advertised by top Asian’s model Nadya Hutagalung. I think this product also try to persuade the customers by introducing it as a nutritious drink with many benefits contain important minerals and vitamins, and absolutely better consumed as sports drink because it can replace the minerals lost after exercise. My father is a big fan of coconut water, since I was kid he has intoduced me about coconut water’s big benefits for health. He also believe whenever feeling exhausted, the most effective way to be fresh again without afraid of the side effects is drinking coconut water, he told me if coconut water can help the internal organs removed toxins from the body, clean digest tract, and soften up our skin. I like coconut water with all the benefits on it. But actually, I like the coconut water when it is mixed with condensed milk or cocopandan syrup not the pure one.

  54. I like young coconut water. But mostly after it already being an “es Kelapa” that’s available in restaurant. So it’s already being mixed up by syrup, sugar, milk, etc. If it is raw, I only liked it when I was thirsty, very thirsty. It’s like when I was in junior high school, my house is located near the beach, so I always jogging alongside of the beach. When I was thirsty, my neighbor-friend and I never bring any water. We just climb the coconut tree and take one or two of them. It was very refreshing.

Although coconut water often used as a sport drink, my physics teacher doesn’t really recommend it though. He said that it will make us sleepy after we drink it. Many of my friends would agree with him, and they actually show the symptom. I don’t know if it is a placebo effects or an actual scientific proof, because I never really thought about it, but I never feel sleepy after I drink coconut water.

  55. “Sales are growing fast: Vita Coco, which accounts for more than 9 of every 10 servings sold in the UK, is reporting sales up 122% year on year.” This is a very surprising fact for me. I thought those coconut drinks don’t make profit that much. Maybe it’s because I don’t really like it and never bought one. I guess the most famous coconut drink in Indonesia is Kalbe’s Fatigon Hydro. The packaging is very nice, very unique, and different from other drinks package. And it comes with orange flavor too. “Coconut water is rich in potassium, which enhances the body's ability to hydrate, making it perfect to drink after exercise," says Dana James, a nutritionist.” And “The natural sugars provide energy, and nutritionists advise drinking it in moderation.” Like those statements say, I saw in a lot of coconut drinks’ advertisements there’s a person exercising or doing sports. I think coconut drink is good for people who do a lot of exercise and sports. It has so much vitamins and minerals. But I also here from other people that those kinds of drinks only meant for athletes, and it might be dangerous for common people if they drink it frequently. But then I saw this statement "We lose more sodium than potassium (when we exercise) and coconut water cannot really replace it, there doesn't seem to be a lot of evidence to support claims for sports recovery.” So I don’t know which is the right one, whether it’s good or not for sports. Maybe Pocari Sweat is better than coconut drinks, because it has a lot of sodium. Thank you for reading.
